Seals Update

July 11, 2009

A Seals team partially depleted by recent developments (5 injuries, 2 red cards and 2 players who left the program) faced a rather impressive array of players from the PSA team last night at the Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos.  Most notably among the PSA roster were an abundant number of players from the Frogs team of recent years and some of Santa Clara University's top players, including Jalil Anibaba, a much honored and highly touted player.  The Seals, in contrast, feature 2 barely high school players from San Francisco, and a number of 18 and 19 year olds, a few cast offs from local colleges, and couple of older Seals players, asked to fill in for injured regulars, who had a hard time playing more than 1/2 the game.  It seemed like two very outmatched teams, but the young Seals players didn't agree.

The PSA scored once in the first half off a perfectly placed free kick from about 20 yards out by David Frank.  However, that was all they could come up with. The momentum turned gradually and the Seals began to win possession time in the second half.  At about the 60th minute, Nick Cashmere, who only two days earlier came up with a big goal against Hayward Morelia, slipped by the left defender to pick a pass laid between the defender and the goalkeeper by Imaan Kerchgani (a Cal defender just picked up), and tied the game 1-1. At the 80th minute, Nick, once again tested the PSA back line, pushing the ball by the central defender who was given little choice but to pull him down or let the Seals go ahead by a 2-1 score.  The defender pulled a red for his efforts and the PSA team went to 10 players.  His sacrifice was good enough to preserve a tie for the host team.  By the end, the Seals players did seem outmatched, and walked away with a sense of accomplishment, having faced a physically superior team, a much older and experienced team, and tying the game with a comeback goal on a field which is not fit for U12 soccer.  The field is a postage stamp size, about 58 X 90 yards, with tire tracks in the muddy areas, potholes filled by soil, and the most uneven surface this side of a cow pasture.  PSA seemed quite comfortable on this horrible surface and to the credit of the Seals players, they mastered the terrain enough to give the big boys a run for their money.
