SFV Quakes Move into 1st Place with 1-0 Victory over Seals

June 3, 2007
With the Seals playing our first ever League match in Marin County at San Marin High School in Novato, the San Fernando Valley Quakes had a lot at stake.  They trailed first place San Jose Frogs by two points, and face them the next day, Sunday June 3rd.

At the same time, the Seals having won the last two matches could move into a strong position among the league leaders with a win. The Seals have played fewer games (2 less) than the Quakes but have nine (9) points.

The first half was very evenly played with the Quakes having a couple of good scoring chances.  The Quakes narrowly missed one chance, hitting the post with a header off of a free kick.  On another opportunity later in the half, Seals keeper Eric Conner made a great save to prevent another goal.

The Seals ratcheted up the pressure in the 2nd half, outshooting the Quakes 7-4 (11-7 for the match).  James Bent and Keith Ratzburg had a few narrow misses.  Rich Halvorsen created a number of dangerous opportunities in the box courtesy of his long bomb throw-ins.  In the 78th minute the Quakes Sean Franklin scored a great goal from the right wing on a very quick counterattack.  The Seals continued to apply pressure on the Quakes defense but were unable to find the equalizer.

The Quakes pulled it out, 1-0.

The Seals next opponent is an away game at the Bakersfield Brigade, on Sunday June 10th.  Game time is 1:00pm
Footnote:  The Quakes seem to be the real deal, as they defeated the San Jose Frogs 2-1, and take a comanding lead in the Conference with 19 points with a 6-2-1 record.
