Benefits of Cross Country

Mental Benefits

Running reduces stress by boosting levels of serotonin in your brain and creating a more positive mood.

Self esteem is improved and goals are achieved through running. Runners realize a greater sense of self-reliance and accomplishment. In other words, running provides an individual with an all natural, drug free, power-packed ego boost!

Running fights depression with the brain’s release of beta endorphins. These are neurotransmitters made in the pituitary gland that can reduce pain, boost the immune system, and bring a greater sense of well being. These “miracle” compounds have eighty times as much pain-easing effect as morphine.

Runners can enjoy a sense of freedom, by forgetting about troubles and feeling the wind in their hair. They can control their own destiny, as they alone make the decision to run as fast and as far as they want!

Running sharpens focus and improves mental stamina, by giving circulation a boost and increasing the flow of blood to the brain!

Social circles can be widened through running by joining a group or a club of fellow enthusiasts.

Physical Benefits

In addition to the psychological benefits, running has so many physical benefits that it is hard to know where to begin.

As mentioned earlier, running helps to keep weight under control. With the exception of cross-country skiing, running burns more calories than any other physical activity!

Cardiovascular health is greatly improved through running by increasing your heart rate and working the heart muscles on a regular basis.

Running can increase HDL levels, which improves overall cholesterol in the body.

The immune system gets a boost through running with an increase in white blood cells. These are the fighter cells in the body, which can combat the early stages of diseases like diabetes and cancer.

Running also improves bone health. Weight bearing exercises increase bone density and prevent injury and the onset of osteoporosis.

And finally, running improves lung capacity and promotes better breathing which enhances general overall health.

2017 Home Meet

We are proud to announce that SJA will be hosting its 1st Annual Home Meet at the Rahway River Park Track Complex on May 7th, 2017.  This is an exciting opportunity to showcase our athletes and display our SJA pride.

2017 Parent/Guardian Requirements

All Parent/Guardians must complete a 3 part requirement before the first practice.

The added responsibility of hosting our home meet comes at a price.  It will require a small army of dedicated volunteers to run a successful event.  With that being said we are requiring that a Parent/Guardian from each family volunteer for a 3 hour block to help at the meet.  We understand busy schedules and on the volunteer site we are able to offer a few other volunteer opportunities if May 7th is a conflict.  Please register quickly if that is the case.

http://tinyurl.com/sjatrack

All athletes must be registered on our google forms site.  This allows for easy access to the athlete database when registering for meets or events.  It only takes a minute.

https://goo.gl/forms/5ISRvxl1EmMSHIQ03

Lastly, all athletes must submit their permission/liability slip with payment.  Grades 3-8 $40/K-2 $25 covers all meet fees, practice facilities, equipment, and the end of the year event.  Lightweight track shirts will be sold throughout the season.  Make all checks payable to SJA TRACK.

2016 Cross Country Season

With school rapidly approaching and the summer winding down we can look forward to the Cross Country season and focus on starting a pre-season conditioning plan.  Starting early will help the athletes build an aerobic base that we can build upon as the season progresses.  Prior to working out, the athlete should be sure to stretch properly and apply the warm up drills that we start every practice with.  That includes, but is not limited to butt-kicks, lunges, high knees, and power skips.

The St. John team consists of athletes of many different ages and abilities so a "one size fits all" workout plan won't work. Athletes should focus on 2 or 3 workout sessions per week, starting with a run/walk when needed approach.  More experienced and conditioned athletes can be a bit more aggressive in their workout sessions as they see fit.  Once a basic comfort running level is attained the following running drills can be incorporated.

  • 4 (or 6) x 400 meters.  This is a track drill that consists of one lap (400 meters) followed by a set of 10 burpees. Do 4 to 6 laps as conditioning permits.
  • Ins and Outs.  Mrs. Gleason's classic speed drill that builds endurance.  This can be done on or off the track and is basically jog 100 meters and then stride 100 meters.  Repeat. A fast walk and a jog can be substituted for those just starting to build endurance.
  • Hills.  Hills are the lifeblood of the Cross Country season and can not be duplicated on the track.  Hills force the knees to lift higher, develop muscle fibers, and increase power.  Hills can be introduced into long runs and can also be used as a simple repeat drill.  Run up the hill, walk/jog down.  Repeat.  A great place to run hills is Oak Ridge Park in Clark.
  • Strength training.  Developing overall fitness is important for maintaining proper running technique.  Running isn't just about the legs and core training should be included.  This can include push-ups, planks, sit ups, mountain climbers, and burpees. Each exercise for 30 seconds 3x each.

Last, but certainly not least, DO NOT FORGET to hydrate.  Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

For those of you interested, I am including a great link on running form.  Remind your athletes to "run tall."  http://www.runnersworld.com/race-training/think-tall-for-good-running-form

Any questions or thoughts, please don't hesitate to reach out.  tmuir13@msn.com terrylyp@gmail.com

Great Season!!!!!

Thank you coaches, volunteers, and parents.

Congratulations to the Athletes!!!!!

19th Annual OLS Invitational

Welcome to our 19th Annual Track & Field Meet!

Two events per athlete.

Do not arrive prior to 11:00 a.m. There will be a coaches’ meeting promptly at 11:30 a.m. prior to the first & second grade shuttle races. Immediately afterwards the 1600 and 800 Meter races will be held.

Eligibility: All athletes are restricted to two events, in any combination, including races, field events or relays. OLS will issue two stickers to each member of your roster. Each athlete must turn in a sticker to the OLS Official at either the start or finish of a race depending upon the Official’s preference.

  • Any athlete can run in a higher grade level but not in a lower grade level. Girls can run in boys relays.

  • You may not use another athlete’s stickers. Should you lose a sticker, consult the official.

  • Please instruct your athletes about the difference between heats and finals.

  • Athletes in two field events should check into both beforehand and advise the officials that they are in both field events.

  • Should an athlete withdraw from a field event in which he has already registered, he should notify the officials.

Running events take precedence over field events. Athletes enlisted in field events and running events should check into the field event first, and then notify the official when their running event is called that they will be running. After the race they should return to the field event.

General Rules:

All events will be run as a final on a time basis. We will attempt to put the fastest athletes into the same heats when the race is run on a time basis to ensure the fastest times, regardless of how many are from the same schools. Should you want your athlete seeded, please notify the Clerk of Course at the time of check–in.

The 100 Meters, the 200 Meters and the 4 x 100 will be run in lanes. Please instruct your runners that they need to stay in their team’s lane or be disqualified. All relay runners must successfully pass their batons within the designated zones and stay in their designated lanes to avoid interfering with other relays and thereby risk disqualification.

There can be no interference in individual races. A runner should pass another runner by running to the right of the runner he wishes to pass. He must then be at least two steps ahead of that passed runner before he cuts to the first lane. However, we will adhere to the “no harm, no foul” interpretation of rules.

In the TurboJav, “tomahawk” throws are not allowed.

Any runner who breaks from the starting line is considered to have entered that event whether he finishes or not.

ABSOLUTELY NO SPIKED SHOES OF ANY KIND ARE PERMITTED. ANY ATHLETE WEARING SPIKES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED AND MAY BE BARRED FROM ANY FURTHER PARTICIPATION IN THE MEET!

NO HOVERBOARDS!!

NO DRONES!!

Scoring will be 6-4-3-2-1 for the first five places in all events. The shuttle races (Fun Runs) do not score.

Prizes : There will be five medals in all individual events and five for relays. There will be plaques for the first three teams.

Please remember to clean up your area. It has been noted that some parents and children treat this field like Yankee Stadium where a paid staff cleans after the game. We are responsible for the clean-up and if we cannot do it, we will not be permitted to return.
