WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CHALLENGER COACH?

1.     The primary role of the coach is to act as a mentor.  Be a positive role model for the players, buddies and families regarding good sportsmanship, teamwork, respect of others and self-worth.  Players and families will often follow your lead.

2.     The coach should instruct the players on basic concepts and rules of the sport.  Coaches will teach the principles and skills of the game through a practice time and before each game.

3.     Coaches will encourage Buddies to help with the teaching of and applications of skills as well as ensuring players are safe and have fun on the field.  Buddies should be considered an extension of the player.

4.     Coaches advocate for each player’s needs and will relay any information that may be of concern in a timely matter to the parents, and, if necessary, to the Division Coordinator. 

5.     Coaches will be prepared for each and every practice and game. Come early enough to make sure all equipment is ready and the Buddies are prepared.  As players arrive they should be paired with a buddy and able to begin a low-organized activity that does not require much instruction or supervision from you. This will allow you the freedom to greet each player and even be able to build relationships with parents.  Make sure each player is ready to play (this means they have their uniform on and glove in hand).

Challenger Baseball Manitoba as an association works very closely with Challenger Baseball Canada, Jays Care Foundation, Baseball Manitoba and their Sport Development Committee to deliver the amazing organized sport of baseball to youth of all abilities.  The most important role our coaches have is to lead players in a fun, safe, consistent and effective way while instilling important life skills and outcomes for players, families and volunteers!  Additionally, this is a tremendous opportunity to grow and develop your own skills, meet amazing children and families and have a great time doing it! 

Becoming a great Challenger coach doesn’t happen overnight.  It takes time, energy, creativity and dedication.  Our association is here to help every step of the way!  Along with standard requirements, we have put together a list of resources that will not only help you coach your Challenger Baseball team this season, but also build an expansive “back pocket toolbox” with lasting transferable skills and life lessons.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

All Challenger Baseball Manitoba coaches are required to submit/attend the following prior to season start:

• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector
• Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check
• Respect In Sport for Activity Leaders Certification (Available free online at http://www.sportmanitoba.ca/coaching/respect-sport)
• Signed “Challenger Baseball Manitoba Coach’s Commitment and Responsibilities” Form
• Signed “Challenger Baseball Manitoba Participant’s Waiver”
• MANITOBA CHALLENGER BASEBALL FUNDAMENTALS (2021 Date TBD)

RECOMMENDED TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
