ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

FEES: For the 2021 season, all players will be required to provide a $25.00 registration fee.  Registration fees should be paid by the Season Opener Event (First week in May - dates TBD) and can be paid via E-Transfer, Cheque, Cash or Credit Card (additional fee applies).
In the past, all players provided a $50.00 refundable Volunteer/Fundraising Bond in lieu of registration fees (or a $50.00 opt out fee) along with a $50 Jersey deposit.  However, in 2021, we feel that the Volunteer and Fundraising Bond program and distribution of returnable Jerseys is not feasible.  We hope that you understand and that you will join us in keeping Challenger Baseball affordable for all families by continuing to participate in Fundraising Opportunities!

IN PERSON DAYS/TIMES/LOCATIONS:
Regular Schedule: Please see the "Divisions" tab for more information about your specific division.  Sessions will, for the most part, be starting the week of May 1, each year and be held on Saturday mornings until the last week in June (weather dependent).

VIRTUAL CHALLENGER (previously known as
SKILL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS): In an effort to provide more skill development and goal achieving opportunities, optional scheduled practices have been previously scheduled for Wednesday evenings at various locations on a week-to-week Sign-Up basis.  In 2021, these sessions will be held primarily online and the focus of our Virtual Challenger program.  Players who cannot attend in person are encouraged to register and participate in Virtual Challenger. Stay tuned for more details.

FAQ

1. What age do you have to be to play?
Players must be a minimum of 4 years of age prior to December 31, of the current year.  There is no maximum age.  If there are enough players registered in each age category (Jr./Sr.), players will be organized into teams based on their age.

2. How much does registration cost?
*NEW IN 2021*  Unfortunately, in 2021, we will not be offering our Volunteer and Fundraising Bond option as detailed below. Registration fees are set at $25.00/player to offset costs associated with lower fundraising opportunities and higher program facilitation costs. If this is unaffordable, please discuss with your Division Coordinator who may be able to work out a plan.

The following information is currently suspended until further notice: Challenger Baseball is completely facilitated by volunteers and funded through Grants, Sponsorships and Fundraising.  However, this only works if our families contribute by participating in fundraising and volunteer ventures. In lieu of registration fees, to encourage families to participate in Fundraising and Volunteering activities, each family is asked to provide a $50 Bond (post-dated cheque preferred) per player that will be returned at the end of the season as long as they complete requirements.  Families may opt out if preferred but a $50 fee would apply.  Because of the Bond option, our program does not qualify for Jumpstart or Kidsport individual funding.  For more information, please visit the page titled Bond Opportunities Players will also need to provide a Jersey Deposit which will be returned at the end of the season when their jersey is returned.  These are to be paid at the Season Opener Event.

3. How long is the waiting list?
Challenger Baseball does not practice a "waiting list" and all registered players will be assigned to a coach and a team.  We create teams based on the number of players and coaches registered.  Each team will have between 8-12 players.  That said, there may be games where there are not enough Buddies for each player to be 1-on-1.  If this is the  case, parents, family, friends and support workers are encouraged to join in to assist their player. For insurance purposes, you will be asked to sign a participation waiver and wear a special Buddy t-shirt so you are easily identifiable to coaches and other observers.

4. We would like to supply our child's Buddy!  Is this possible?
*NEW IN 2021* To keep our cohort sizes down and limit the number of individual exposures during in-person sessions, we ask that all families provide a Buddy from their own family's "Bubble".  This could be a parent, sibling, respite worker. . .we would hope that this person be the same week to week.  The designated person will need to sign a waiver and follow all guidelines in order to join us on field.  If this is not possible, please discuss with your division coordinator.  There may be a volunteer Buddy looking for a player to mentor!

Absolutely.  While we encourage our players to learn about personal independence and our families to socialize and cheer on their team as they would in any other sport, if you feel your player would benefit from having a Buddy who is someone whom you identify, this can be arranged.  All we ask is that person signs a participation waiver, wears a special Buddy t-shirt during activities and lets us know when they are available through the Buddy Sign-Up (link found on this page)

5. My child is pretty independent or My child is very high need!  Can they still play?
Yes, yes and YES!  No question!  Challenger Baseball is a completely inclusive program for all children, youth and young adults with cognitive or physical disabilities, no matter how minor or severe.  In addition to making adaptations and modifications to all activities based on each player's abilities, through the information we collect on the registration form, we try our best to match each player to coaches who would be comfortable with the child's abilities as well as teammates whom each player would be able to relate.  Part of being on a Challenger team is that each player is encouraged to help each other to work on their own strengths and achieve personal goals.  A player who is more independent may be encouraged to use their abilities to help another player who may need more assistance.  The player who may need more assistance may be the leader of team cheers, even with just being excited and vocalizations!
