It’s been a little bit crazy lately and things have gotten really busy really fast. I just wanted to take some time out and clarify what is all going on because there have been a lot of questions. It’s going to be a little bit lengthy email, but please take time and read all of it. This is a busy time of year because of basketball, finals, and Christmas so it’s a little hectic for everyone involved! Let me tell you where we are at in everything.
The girls did a great job on the car wash and raised right at $2000. This went to paying all of the tournament entry fees for all of our teams. Tournaments can cost anywhere from $150 to $250 per tournament. The rest of it goes into the girls basketball activity account to be used for uniforms and miscellaneous equipment that we may need. The snap raise fundraiser went well. The girls ended up making just over $5,000 off of the fundraiser. I will place an order for their shoes (all teams) and hopefully we will get them before the break. We are still in need of help with the program sales. Currently we have 3 ½ pages of ad’s sold and to really make it work we are trying to get to 25. Please make a last ditch effort to sell an ad in the next week. I am going to have to make a decision on if we proceed or not and if we can’t make a profit I am going to have to refund the money to the companies that have already contacted us. The program sales go directly to feeding the kids on game days and toward the banquet at the end of the year. The goal for us is to be able to feed the kids on game days and not to have to have everyone pay out of pocket for the banquet.
Around this time of the year we participate in two activities that allow our girls to give back. Since before I was here we have visited a “nursing home” and wrapped doors with Christmas paper to create a holiday feel for the individuals that are placed under care and may not have a holiday to spend with anyone. The entire girls athletics program participates. We are doing this on Wednesday after practice. I understand that the communication hasn’t gotten back to the parents today so I wanted to make sure you guys know what we are doing. We are responsible for 15 rooms and will hang wreaths on their doors. It doesn’t require a lot of time, and it isn’t a mandatory thing, but just an opportunity to give to those that are less fortunate during the holidays.
We also take part in adopting a family within our district as well. These are young families that have fallen on hard times that will eventually feed into Klein Collins. Each female sport adopts a family. Some of these families have older siblings that are already attending Collins. We are going to take care of the younger siblings and the families in order to relieve the burden that they may be feeling for Christmas. Once again, this isn’t a mandatory thing, but rather a chance to give and allow our girls to see that this time of year is more than receiving gifts and a chance to show someone outside their immediate circle that people care for them. The family we have selected has asked for the following items:
- pants/jeans--size 12 for 2nd grade girl
- shirts--size 12/14 for 5th grade boy
- Pants--size 12/14 for 5th grade boy
- 5 laundry detergents
- 5 dish soaps
- 5 deodorants
- 5 sets of shampoo/conditioner
- 5 toothpastes
- 5 body soaps/bar soap
- 1 plastic clothes hamper
- HEB/Kroger gifts cards or cash for food (the more the better)
Please give what you can, if you can, but we also understand that not everyone can participate. We will be collecting these items all week and sending them to the families this weekend. I know this is short notice, but I just received the information as well.
Next week is finals week, so everything changes dramatically!
- Monday and Tuesday will be regular days with regular practice times freshmen 6:30-8am and JV/V 3-4:30.
- Wednesday freshmen will practice 7-8:30am during their final exam time, JV/V will practice 11-12:30pm
- Thursday JV/V will practice 9:15-10:45 during their athletic period, and freshmen will practice 10:45-12:15
- Friday will be a game day at home so we may go through a brief walk through. It is important for you to know that we will play that day at 4pm, and your daughter will need to be back by the designated time for their games. I know most of you are working and rides can be difficult. Please communicate with us if there is going to be some concerns and issues during this time.
Please let Coach Gabbard know if you have concerns or questions about what is going on. We have tried some different things and while some are flourishing, others are lagging behind. It has been an exciting start and we are looking forward to the start of district this Friday. Go Tigers!
