Braydon Deming, Billings West handle Billings Central
Billings West coach Kelly Darragh had a simple directive for Braydon Deming in the third quarter.
“He told me to get my butt inside,” offered Deming with a smile. “And it ended up working.”
Deming had been hanging around the 3-point line and Darragh wanted the 6-foot-4 senior closer to the basket.

Deming listened, making all five shot attempts in the third quarter en route to a game-high 19 points in the Bears’ 53-41 win over Billings Central on Saturday night in nonconference boys basketball.
“Those were just some high percentage shots,” said Deming, who also unofficially had a game-high 12 rebounds. “We were getting the ball inside and hitting our bunnies.”
“He’s arguably the best 3-point shooter in the state,” said Darragh. “And he’s so big and physical, he’s hard to guard inside. You have to reach a happy medium. We wanted him getting some touches inside.”
Twin brother Bryson added 10 points, eight in the first half.
Sweeping the boards, West opened an early 18-8 lead. The Rams stayed within striking distance on three Jet Campbell 3-pointers, pulling within 25-20 late in the first half.
“Billings Central is a good team. We know they will always come at us with their best,” said Braydon Deming.
Campbell led Central with 12 points.
“Physically, we got pushed around,” said Rams’ coach Jim Stergar. “You have to rebound against these big teams. When we did, then we’d come down and get just one shot. When we moved the ball around, we made some plays.”
It was Central’s third game in five days. They defeated Billings Senior (Tuesday) and Miles City (Friday) earlier in the week.
“It was a treacherous week,” Stergar said. “Considering everything, we had great effort.”
West led by as many as 15, 48-33 late in the game. “We kept them in front of us. We made it hard for them to get the ball inside,” Deming said.
“We just wanted to bounce back and get a good win,” he added.
West was coming off 71-68 overtime loss to Billings Skyview on Tuesday.
It was West’s (2-2) first home game of the season. “We wanted to make it a good one,” Darragh said.
The Bears play at Miles City on Tuesday and take on Billings Senior at Rimrock Auto Arena on Friday. West’s next game at the Golden Dome is Feb. 4.
Billings Central returns to Eastern A play with home games against Sidney and Glendive next weekend.

BELGRADE BRUSHES ASIDE BROWNING:
Panthers head coach Mike Deming said his players were so excited for Saturday night’s game against Browning at Worthington Arena that most showed up to watch the Montana State women play at 2 p.m. and remained there until their own tip-off at 8.
The Panthers didn’t disappoint, jumping out to a 27-10 lead after eight minutes and earning a running clock by the fourth of a 71-37 triumph.
“They were so anxious to play and they couldn’t wait to be there,” Deming said. “They took advantage of it.”
Dawson Fowler led Belgrade (6-2, 3-1 Central A) with 18 points, Brock Salsbury added 16, and Ethan Page 12. The Indians struggled to guard the Panthers, who hit six hit 3-pointers.
“We shot the ball unbelievably well,” Deming said. “Defense wasn’t great, but was good enough to cause some problems. I was very pleased with effort tonight. I thought they shared the ball. It would go inside, and if anybody helped, we kicked it to the open person and shot it. … It’s hard to guard a team with so many shooters.”
Trey Layman added seven assists.
