Spartans knock down 11 threes in win over Stevensville

STEVENSVILLE – For the second time in two games this season, Missoula Sentinel’s 3-point prowess spilled over into double digits.

Three days after drilling 10 triples in a high-scoring loss to Bozeman, the Spartans knocked down 11 on Tuesday night in a 75-55 victory over Class A Stevensville.

Sentinel was 11 of 26 from downtown, led by the shooting of junior Sam Beighle. The game’s leading scorer notched 24 points in all with six makes from beyond the arc in nine tries.

Will Mytty added another 11, including a pair on a two-handed dunk after a steal. He led the Spartans (1-1) with three steals.

Stevensville (0-1), which trailed by just 11 points headed into the fourth quarter, was led by James Fry’s 20 points and 11 rebounds.

 BELGRADE  54 SALMON 24

PANTHERS BOYS ROLL: As far as season openers go, it couldn’t have been scripted any better for Belgrade’s boys Tuesday night.

They connected on their first five shot attempts from the field, took a 10-0 lead, and a forced timeout less than two minutes into the contest.

Hayden Van Winkle and Dawson Fowler combined for the game’s first eight points with drives to the basket or on short jumpers, while Brock Salsbury buried a shot from the perimeter, and the Panthers were never threatened in their season opener with Salmon.

Led by Fowler’s game-high 19, including three 3-pointers, the Panthers posted a 54-24 victory.

“It was a great start. Unselfish basketball, cutting effectively, and the guys finished shots,” said head coach Mike Deming. “They called a timeout and we felt good about the situation.”

About the only thing that didn’t go right in the first half was a failed dunk attempt by Trey Layman. The senior got out in front of the pack on a fast-break, but the ball slammed off the back of the iron.

“That would have been awesome, but Trey has come into the season absolutely ready to play. He’s in basketball shape, and like I’ve said before he’s the smartest player around,” Deming said. “A dunk would have been an awesome way to start the season for him.”

Layman, a 6-foot-4 forward, did not score in the contest, but he didn’t need to. The Savages had no answer for the hot-shooting Fowler, who only played the first two minutes of the second half, and were unable to keep pace with the much more athletic Belgrade squad.

Van Winkle scored the majority of his 11 points in the paint, while Salsbury attacked the Savages from the perimeter en route to also scoring 11.
