Browning survived a missed last-second short jumper and advanced to the semifinals of the Central/Eastern A Divisional with a 62-60 quarterfinal win over Billings Central on Thursday at Rimrock Auto Arena.

The Indians will face the Laurel-Miles City winner Friday at 8 p.m. Billings Central plays the Laurel-Miles City loser Friday at noon.

The game had its share of theatrics. Central's Peyton Hanser threw down two dunks in the first quarter and there were several wild finishes at the rim.

Browning ended the third quarter on an 11-3 run, giving them a 47-41 lead heading into the final quarter. Central clawed its way back into the game, tying it a couple of times. The Indians grabbed the lead for good after Tyree Whitcomb scored to give them a 60-59 lead with 54 seconds remaining.

Central's Noah Gaudreau had a tightly contested shot from near the right block at the buzzer, but the shot was too short off the backboard. Browning coach Mark Magee credited a drill they practice everyday to getting the final stop.

"We call it the 30-second drill," Magee said. "Keep them outside and not let them score for 30 seconds. It's something that we work on all the time so that's what I told them at the timeout."

Relieved, Magee said, "We have to just keep believing. That's one thing I preached to these guys from day one. We got 80 kids trying out for this team, and not everybody can make it so I tell them I picked the best of the best. They have to believe they are capable of playing on Saturday night at any level."

Whitcomb and Justin Calf Boss Ribs led Browning with 13 points and Weston Mad Plume added 12. Browning was just 19 of 30 from the free-throw line.

"Last year we played them and got beat by two so it felt good to get some revenge," Whitcomb said. "Wicked crowd. It was loud and I couldn't think or hear my coaches. Good atmosphere though."

Shay Dantic scored 17 to lead Central, which made just 14 of 23 free throws. Gaudreau finished with 13 points, and Chrishon Dixon had 12 points and eight assists.

Miles City reaches quarterfinals with win over Livingston

  • KYLE HANSEN and MIKE SCHERTING

Steven Ray scored 12 points and Tyler Burk added 11 to help the Miles City Cowboys get past Livingston 44-36 Thursday in a winner's bracket game of the Central/Eastern A Divisional at Rimrock Auto Arena.

Miles City advanced to a quarterfinal game against Laurel at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, getting just a few hours of rest.

"I have the utmost confidence in our guys and I think they'll be ready to play," Miles City coach Houston Finn said. "Just need to dictate that tempo for 32 minutes."

Livingston also plays again Thursday. The Locomotives face Hardin in an 8 p.m. loser-out game.

Miles City led the entire way, though things got tight at the end following a technical assessed to Burk with 3:07 remaining.

Jakim Ricketts converted both free throws to pull Livingston within 36-34, but the Rangers didn't make a field goal the rest of the way.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line to ice the win.

Finn said his team struggled with their shot, but should be happy that they walked out with another close victory.

When asked if fixing those problems in between games was easy, he laughed, "I don't know. Ask me around 7:30."

Ricketts finished with 12 points to lead Livingston.

Hardin wins fast-paced game against Livingston in Friday's finale

  • KYLE HANSEN and MIKE SCHERTING

The Hardin Bulldogs moved on in the loser's bracket of the Central/Eastern A Divisional Thursday with a high-energy 71-48 win over Livingston at Rimrock Auto Arena.

Few shots were passed up by either team in a game that went up and down the court from tip to horn.

Virgil McCormick scored 23 points to pace the Bulldogs, and Darnell Left Hand had 12 points and 16 rebounds. McCormick also had four of Hardin's 17 assists.

The teams combined for 119 field goal attempts, including 26 from the 3-point line. The teams also combined for 29 steals and shot 40 free throws.

John Waddell had a team-high 12 points for Livingston, which included a near halfcourt buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter.

The Bulldogs will play Sidney at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. They'll also play the remainder of the tournament without freshman reserve Cayden Redfield, who suffered a broken arm when he landed on the basketball near the Hardin bench.

Redfield was escorted off the MetraPark floor with a towel draped around his arm to cover up the injury.
