WCAA Player Donates to Locks of Love
March 26, 2008 -  --  The WCAA has a player for which we are very very proud.

Please join in and share with Caleigh McCarn on how proud we are of her recent donation to the Locks of Love program.

Caleigh is a player on the Healthpoint Medical Group Pumas of the Ponytails division of softball, and if you know Caleigh, you know that she has ALWAYS had the longest and most beautiful hair. So this was a great donation for such a caring young lady.

Caleigh, we are so proud of you!

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The organization meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses they provide helps to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.

March 21, 2008 -  --  Today we were notified that our bid to host the 2008 13 and 14 year old boys baseball all star tournaments have been approved!

This is great news for our program and a fantastic opportunity to be recognized by the other Dixie programs within District 6. We will be adding a "tournaments section" to this website that will provide more detailed information as we get closer to this date.

The TENTATIVE dates for this tournament are June 27th-July 3rd.

Beware of the Chicken Wing
March 12, 2008 -  --  When a player's front elbow rides up through a swing, then a level swing becomes impossible. This is the most common fault in most youth baseball & softball players' swings, and is called the "chicken wing".

See the photo to the right of a player's left elbow riding-high in the chicken wing position - THIS IS NOT A GOOD SWING!

Check out the article below titled "Breakdown of a Good Swing" to get a pictorial view of a swing our youth should be striving for.

Game of The Week - Cheetahs Take Wildcats in a Thriller Down to the Last Out!
March 10, 2008 -  --  On a cool and very windy day, the Senior Softball division set out to have the game of the week on Saturday morning; and it turned into a thriller that went down to the wire to the final out.

The Crosscreek Orthodontics Cheetahs narrowly beat the Florida Hospital Wildcats by a score of 10-9. The Cheetahs pounded out two hits and capitalized on fielding errors and walks to top the Wildcats, who pounded out 4 hits of their own.

Note Amanda Teets (see photo), making an excellent play at first base to get the out. You can see other photos of this game in the Photo Album section of this website.

A Salute to WCAA Baseball & Softball Volunteers
March 4, 2008 -  --  Without a doubt, the WCAA Baseball & Softball program has the best volunteers around!

Kudos to everyone that helped out to make our first opening day at the Wesley Chapel District Park a fun and memorable event.

All home teams made sure the concession stand was covered, and we had volunteers around the park looking after the bouncies, raffle, balloons, and face painting.

Special thanks go out to Ms. Deb Harmon, Ms. Julie Smialek, and Ms. Shannon Selos for your creativity and execution on a plan well done!

As we move forward, please remember that each home team has an obligation to cover the concession stand for each game (this was covered at regisration). There are no more than 9 home games a season, so it is not an issue when shared across the team and the 11 week schedule.

WCAA Volunteers Rock!

This message was brought to you by Boardwalk Frozen Custard, awesome sponsors of the AA Baseball Yankees.

First Game - Rays and Cubs of T-Ball Division
At 8:30am on a beautiful March 1st morning, the mighty Re/max - Gail Beskid Rays and Dr. Paul Duga Cubs took their place on the chalked line to hear our National Anthem just prior to kicking off the 2008 season.

A simple ritual and a routine for thousands of baseball and softball programs around the nation, yet a first for the WCAA Baseball & Softball program in 2008! It was a wonderful thing to open our program at the Wesley Chapel District Park - Baseball & Softball has arrived for Wesley Chapel!

The Dr. Paul Duga Cubs had a great game, driving in 14 runs for the day, narrowly taking the The Re/max - Gail Beskid Rays who scored 9 runs. Note the great throw to Rays first baseman Matthew Snyder (see photo) to get the Cubs runner out at first base in the opening inning!

Check out opening day photos in the "Photo Albums" section of this website and look for the "Opening Day" album. And if you have some photos of your own you would like to share, please send them to baseball@wcaafla.org and we will do our best to post them.

Top Ten Things to Know About WCAA Baseball & Softball in 2008
November 18, 2007 -  --

1) The WCAA is expecting more than 550 kids to enroll in the spring season, and registration fees have been set at $95 for T-ball and Softball, and $105 for Baseball. For the WCAA regular 2008 spring season, all games and practices will be held almost exclusively at the diamonds at the new Wesley Chapel District Park at 7727 Boyette Road. The teams will form and begin practicing in early February, and games will be scheduled from February 23rd through to mid May.

2) The WCAA will provide Jersey, hat/visor, pants, socks, and belt (where required) for each player that enrolls. The WCAA will provide each team with catcher's gear (right handed mitts only). Each player will receive a trophy at the end of the season. Medals will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams in the intra-league tournament. Each All Star selected for the team will receive a upgraded jersey and hat, and a trophy.

3) The WCAA is expecting to field teams in the following age divisions:

Division Description Events Other Info

Senior Softball Girls Softball for ages 13+ Each team which will have 15 game Must be age 13 to 18 on April 30th.

NOTE* If necessary, the WCAA will use best judgment in creating age divisions based on the volume of registrants across the age range. If registration is low in key age groups, it is possible that the children in those age groups will be included in a division where the challenge-factor is either less or greater than the norm. In extreme situations, a child may be excluded from the program due to lack of registrations for that child’s age group.

4) Most teams will be scheduled to have up to two games a week, with one game on a weekday, and the other game on Saturday. Please see the "tentative" schedule by looking at the "Calendar" menu item on the www.leaguelineup.com/wcaa website to get a better understanding of days and times of games. With a large number of teams expected in the T-ball division, the T-Ball games for 5 and 6 year olds will be scheduled throughout the day on Saturdays, and Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. See the "Rules" menu to understand the format of T-ball play.

5) Due to an expected large turnout of more than 40 teams and limited field space, practices may be held on any day of the week, Monday through Sunday, at the manager's discretion.

6) Depending upon enrollment, some of the WCAA divisions may develop interlocking schedules with neighboring youth programs. As an example, the Senior divisions (ages 13 and up) of both baseball and softball are notoriously tough to fill, and a joint schedule may be the best for multiple organizations.

7) There will be an end-of-season intra-league local tournament where all WCAA regular season teams will participate in what may be a double elimination tournament to crown a champion in each division. This intra-league tournament is tentatively targeted for the week leading up to the Memorial Day weekend in May.

8) The WCAA spring program is counting on each parent to participate in the areas of fundraising (including concessions) and sponsorships. Every parent and player is expected to assist with fundraising, ensure the concession stand is covered, and consult local businesses with a request for sponsorship.

9) Parents and players are responsible for providing a helmet with facemask and chinstrap, cleats, gloves, and bats. Bats must say "Approved for Dixie League Play".

10) All-star selections will be made at the end of the season to form teams that move forward through a post-season State and National tournament. The coaches and administrators of the league will select top players in May that will be invited to camp-like practice sessions so that they may be evaluated for a final selection of 12 players and two alternates for each All Star team. It is important to note that not every child will be selected to participate in an evaluation camp, nor to play in the post-season. The WCAA administration will not accept complaints or escalations regarding all star selections.
