And So It Ends
March 20, 2009 - 09:15 PM
At first it looked just like old times when Kim Bell scored a goal on her first shift, assisted by Bettina "Juicy" Schneider, against the DWHL Firebirds at the Apex on Friday night, but things went downhill from there.
The Firebirds answered with a rebound goal, tying the score 1-1. Then later in the first period, an opponent's shot hit the post and popped back out while play continued on. But a late whistle by the ref then determined the post shot was a goal, and the bad call frustrated the Monkeys who then lost by that said goal 1-2.
Also unfortunate is when MVP of the game Jennifer "Lefty" Morrow* had to leave the game due to injury on the half boards, along with Coach Lance who accompanied her to the hospital. The Monkeys tried to get some offense going late in the 3rd to win the game for their fallen teammate but were unable to sink a tying goal in the last seconds of the game.
Better Luck next year Monkeys!
*Jen has a punctured lung but is going to be okay in a few weeks.
Renegades Edge Out Monkeys 2-0
March 14, 2009 - 08:45 PM
After a delayed start of the game, waiting for the refs to show up, the Monkeys took to the ice against the DWHL Renegades on home ice. The IMs fought a very close and well-played game until the bitter end, losing 0-2.
The Monkey defensive game was pretty spot on, except for a couple minor breakdowns, and the score remained 0-0 for the first half of the game. Unfortunately, the Monkey offensive game didn't generate enough shots and quality scoring chances to answer to the Renegades' two goals.
Thankfully, Lisa McGoalie had a superb game stopping over 30 shots to keep the IMs in the hunt, and Tedi "Precious" Zimbeck also had a stellar game, being the twice-in-a-row MVP that she is.
IMs Blanked by Comets
February 20, 2009 - 10:00 PM
The Monkeys put forth a great effort tonight at EPIC arena in Ft. Collins but were unable to put any notches on the scoreboard and lost 0-3.
The Comets got a goal each period including a power play goal in the first and a breakaway goal in the third from their star player.
Lisa McGoalie played a solid game and stopped 29 of 32 shots in net.
Tedi Zimbeck had a strong game on defense, often clearing the zone on her own and taking the puck up ice. Coach Lance Jaeger awarded Tedi the MVP Monkey Tool belt for the game.
Monkeys Burned by Flames
February 7, 2009 - 10:30 PM
The Monkeys took on the Fort Collins Flames on home ice Saturday night. After two periods of well-played hockey, the IMs were only down by one goal, 0-1 going into the third period. Unfortunately, the IMs had a defensive breakdown in the third period and gave up three goals, losing the game 1-4.
Also in the third period was a spectacular Courtney-Courtney Monkey goal as Courtney "Coxie" Wilcox passed the puck up to Courtney "Baby" Lawrence who broke away from their defense and slammed one home so that the Monkeys didn't end up with a big old goose egg.
Coach Lance gave the MVP jersey to awesome defense woman Robyn Delay for her aggressiveness, and playing like she's a brick wall.
IMs Lose in Overtime
January 24, 2009 - 07:00 PM
The Ice Monkeys came close to winning this game, but fell 1-2 in overtime to the Angry Beavers at Foothills Ice Arena. Despite the loss, the Monkeys played excellent team defense and Lisa McGoalie was on top of her game.
Jettie Wunsche scored the one and only goal for the Monkeys on the first shift of the first period but the Beavers answered half way through the first, and the score remained 1-1 until two minutes into the overtime.
It was a tough loss but Coach Lance said that it was Carla "Bug O'Death" Endsley's best effort put forth this year so far and she walked away with the monkey tool belt for MVP.
Chix Ontop Again
January 10, 2009 - 09:00 AM
The Ice Monkeys played better during the second game against the Chix of Steamboat only 12 hours later, but still had one period, the first period, where they did not clear out players in front of the net resulting in a 0-4 score going into the second period.
The Monkeys rebounded somewhat and were able to put three goals in the net. The first one was in the second period when Courtney "Baby" Lawrence passed to Shannon Lusso and she shot from the point and it went all the way to the back of the net. The second Monkey goal was scored when Baby got on a breakaway and even though was wrestled to the ground, she was still able to score on her back. The third goal was centered by Jenn Morrow and sank by Jett Wunsche, her third on the weekend. The final score was 3-7.
The beardless coach Lance gave Kristi Herd the Monkey Tool Belt for the game for her physical play, yet avoiding the penalty box.
Monkeys Miss the Boat
January 9, 2009 - 09:15 PM
The Ice Monkeys traveled to Steamboat on Friday night to take on the Chix With Stix at Howelsen Ice Arena. The IMs played okay for two periods, but had defensive breakdowns, especially during the second period when the Chix scored six goals to the IMs one.
Jett Wunsche was the offensive highlight of the game, scoring the only two Monkey goals - the first one assisted by both her linemates Brenda Bedard and Jenn Morrow, and Brenda also assisted Jettie's second goal. The final score was 2-10. Ouch.
Coach Lance gave the MVP jersey to Brenda for always playing well at center, making key playes offensively and defensively, and for her two assists.
Monkeys Blank the Spitfires
December 20, 2008 - 08:30 PM
Despite the Monkeys' slow start, the lack of quality reffing, and a goal being waved off, the Monkeys beat the B2 Spitfires 2-0 at the Apex on Saturday night.
Half way through the first period, first blood was drawn when Jenn "Lefty" Morrow passed the puck from the corner to Jett Wunsche in the low slot who banged it home for the first goal. In the third period, Diane "Ho" Gomez cycled the puck to linesmate Carla "Bug" Endsley, who then centered it to Kristi "Ho" Herd for the second goal.
Lisa McGoalie earned a shutout while the offensive line of Brenda Bedard, Jenn, and Jettie collectively earned the Monkey Tool Belt from Coach Lance Jaeger. They played extremely well together, and were all physical and won the battles to the puck.
Monkeys Schooled by Colorado College
December 7, 2008 - 11:00 AM
The Ice Monkeys traveled south to Honnen Ice Rink in Colorado Springs on Sunday morning to play the Tigers at CC. Clearly outmatched by the young college team, the Monkeys never gave up and worked hard defensively each shift. CC was not able to overly run up the tally due to the hard, physical work of the entire team, and the final score was 1-4.
Lisa "McGoalie" McCorkle was the key to that success. She saw a lot of rubber this game - 55 shots in all and made 51 saves. If it weren't for her, the score would have been a lot worse. Unquestionably, Mcgoalie was the MVP for the game.
The IMs were only able to launch a mere 7 shots on goal this game, but one went in when Amanda "Woodie" Lockwood fired a rocket from midfield that was followed up by Kristi Herd on the rebound.
IMs Sink to Renegades
December 5, 2008 - 10:15 PM
"We played a lot better game than the scoreboard reflects," said Coach Lance Jaeger about the 0-6 Monkey loss to the DWHL Renegades on Friday night at the Apex. Three goals were scored within a couple minutes of each in the second period, exposing some defensive breakdowns, but other than that, the Monkeys played pretty well against a good team.
Kimmay worked hard as "rover" as she cycled through the two forward lines, which isn't easy, but she always hustled to the puck no matter what. She was awarded the game MVP.
Weekend Twofer Ends in Monkey Win
November 22, 2008 - 10:30 PM
For the second time this weekend, the Ice Monkeys played an out of division game - this time taking on the B2 Arapahoe Chill team, on home ice.
The IMs scored early and often in the first period with four goals. Jenn Morrow led the scoring pack as her "third time's a charm" rebound finally went in, followed by a sweet back-hander from Brenda Bedard in the same shift. Courtney "Baby" Lawrence assisted both goals and Jenn also assisted the second. Next, Jett "Jettie" Wunsche got into the act by sinking a goal, centered by Carla "Bug" Endsley and Kristi Herd took advantage of Diane Gomez and Kim Bell's rebound scrambled net clearing to swish the fourth goal.
In the second period, Dori Webb added a nice goal assisted by Jenn and Kim May and then in the third period, things got interesting. Coach Lance Jaeger moved all defense to offense and the first two O lines back to D. That's when Kim Bell made a D to D pass to Baby and she shot it from the point, and it went in! The final score was 6-1.
Jettie played very well on every shift, she stood out as the game's MVP, and took home the Monkey Tool Belt.
IMs Almost Rob the Bandits
November 22, 2008 - 10:00 PM
The Ice Monkeys traveled to South Suburban Denver tonight to play an out of division, A2 game against the undefeated Bandits. The IMs took an early lead with a shot by Tammy Rollins from the point that skipped its way to the back of the net. The shocked Bandits, who thought they were going to have an easy go of it, retaliated and got on the scoreboard before the period break. The score was 1-1 going into the second.
The Bandits were able to score an unanswered goal in the second and another in the third period to make the final score 1-3. But if it weren't for outstanding goaltender Lisa McCorkle, who stopped over 50 shots, the score could have been much worse.
Coach Lance Jaeger noted that McCorkle had a great game, as did a lot of Monkeys, but the night's MVP jersey belongs to the wrestling diva, Amanda "Little Woodie" Lockwood. Woodie broke up numerous plays and odd-man rushes back on defense.
IMs Unable to Douse Flames
November 15, 2008 - 06:45 PM
The Ice Monkeys, coming off a great win last week, went on the road to play the Flames up in Ft. Collins, and was unable to keep the winning streak alive.
The Flames, a much younger and talented team, took the lead early in the game and never looked back. However, the IMs did play very strong and physical the first two periods, making the Flames earn each of their four goals. Brenda Bedard put in a goal for the Monkeys too, with much determination from a scramble in front of the net, assisted by Jenn Morrow. That set the scoreboard at 1-4 going into the third.
Unfortunately there was a bit of a defensive breakdown in the third period despite Lisa McCorkle's outstanding play in the net as she was being peppered from all angles, and the final score was an embarrassing 1-8.
Also on the bright side, Courtney "Coxie" Wilcox played awesome back on defense, and was awarded the night's MVP honors for holding the blue line and putting shots on the net.
First B1 Win For Ice Monkeys Against Old Nemesis
November 8, 2008 - 10:30 PM
Having not won a single game all season last year after moving up to the B1 division, the Ice Monkeys finally pulled it off, extinguishing the Comets of Windsor 6-4 tonight at the Ice Centre.
Two years ago, the Monkeys went 21-1 in the B2 division, losing only one game, the championship game in the tournament to the Comets. Last year, the IMs dropped both regular season games to the Comets, so tonight's victory was sweet indeed.
Brenda Bedard got things rolling in the first period with a sweet backhander that found the back of the net, and the IMs took an early 1-0 lead. The second period was full of Monkey goals, four of them in all. It was the ever-opportunistic Carla "Bug O'Death" Endsley's turn to take home a rebound goal as she was minding the back post, and then Diane "DynaHo" Gomez moved her stick into action on a rebound and slapped the puck into the goal with finesse. Then Courtney "Baby" Lawrence, despite Coach Lance Jaeger wondering if she was a little low on energy showed him by scoring the fourth goal.
But each time the IMs scored, it seemed the Comets answered with a goal just seconds afterward. When it was all said and done, two goals remained unanswered. The fifth was late in the second period, another pretty shot by Gomez, and then Kristi Herd added a little more padding to the score with a sinker that found the five hole.
Newly returning team Captain Gomez was awarded the MVP honor of the evening for consistent, good-minded play and two goals.
IMs Lose Close Game in Season Opener
October 25, 2008 - 10:30 PM
The Ice Monkeys lost to the Angry Beavers 3-4 in their Season Opener on home ice tonight at the Promenade Ice Centre. It was such a close game that the score showed a tie on the scoreboard for most of the three periods.
The Beavers scored early in the first period and it looked like last season all over again there for a moment, but then the IMs kicked it into gear and proved they would not go down quietly. In fact, the IM's own Bettina "Juicy" Schneider scored her VERY FIRST ICE MONKEY GOAL EVER to make it 1-1 in the first, assisted by Brenda Bedard.
Returning player Courtney "Baby" Lawrence also answered another Beaver goal by forechecking a defenseman and poking the puck away... right into the unsuspecting goaltender's net.
That was followed up by Jett "Jettie" Wunsche's sweet shot that sunk in, also assisted by Brenda, to put the IM's in the lead at 3-2 in the second. However, the IMs were unable to hold onto the lead, despite the fabulous play by goalie Lisa McCorkle. Lisa had a great game, stopping 28 shots and performing gymnastic-like routines, which earned her the MVP Monkey Tool Belt for the game.
