Nighthawks Take a Break
The Nighthawks face a 9-day layoff before they take on the Waukesha Firebirds again on July 8th. There are no games on each of the next two weekends as the Eastern Division, for some reason, doesn't feel like playing baseball. The Nighthawks enter the break in 2nd place in the North at 10-6.
Thrun Blanks Firebirds
Nighthawk starter Mike Thrun spent the past week travelling around the state working youth baseball camps. Apparently Thrun wasn't done putting on the clinic Monday night.
Taking the hill against the Waukesha Firebirds, Thrun was nearly flawless as he went the distance for his 5th win of the season and 1st shutout. Waukesha was able to get few runners on base as they managed to draw 5 walks to go along with 5 hits. However, Thrun struckout 9 batters to eliminate any opportunity Waukesha had to score. The Nighthawks also played stellar defense behind their ace turning 3 double plays on the night.
Of course, pitching and defense wasn't the only story of the game. The Nighthawks put together another solid offensive attack, banging out 8 runs on 11 hits. Joel Hoberg collected a pair of RBI singles as he begins to heat it up at the plate. Randy Reed and Scott Sievert also collect a pair of hits each. And Andy Schwall continued to swing a hot bat, driving in a pair of runs.
The win moved the Nighthawks to 10-6 on the year and kept them in 2nd place in the North.
Disappointing Afternoon Ends in Split
The West Allis Nighthawks had an opportunity to pick up ground on division leading New Berlin. All they had to do was sweep a double-header from the winless North Shore Knights. However, the scrappy, young Knights came from behind to clip the Nighthawks in extra innings in Game 1 to pick up their first win of the season. The Nighthawks did manage to bounce back in Game 2 and salvage the split. Here are the highlites from today's action:
Game 1
North Shore catcher put the Knights on the board early with a 3-run homerun off of Nighthawk starter Jon Mann. The Nighthawks would answer with 3 of their own in the bottom of the 1st to tie the game at 3-3. After pushing the score to 6-3, the Nighthawks' offense fell apart. The Nighthawks had two runners thrown out at the plate, a failed bunt attempt, and a caught stealing of third base. As the Nighthawks were busy costing themselves scoring opportunities, the North Shore began to get to Mann. With 3 runs in the 6th and another in the 9th, the Knights pulled out a 7-6 win. Leading the offensive attack were Randy Reed with 4 hits and Joe Janke and Andy Schwall with a pair of doubles each.
Game 2
Game 2 got off to a much better start for the Nighthawks. A pair of doubles by Joe Schreck and 2-run single by Mike Thrun led the way to a 7-run 1st inning. Joe Janke would add a 2-run double and Andy Schwall would hit his 1st homerun of the season to cap off a 10-run scoring attack. Geoff Ziesemer wouldn't need that much run-support as he limited the Knights to 4 runs on only 4 hits. Ziesemer would strikeout 8 batters as he finally picked up his 1st win of the season.
The split brought the Nighthawks' record to 9-6 on the season. Their next game is Monday night against Waukesha. It is rain make-up from early in the season. First pitch is set for 7 pm at Harvey Kuenn Field.
