Basketball Program Overview

There have been several questions about the various programs that the Springfield Basketball Association (SBA) and Springfield Recreation Department (Rec) are offering this season.  Below is an overview of the programs, commitment and timing - If you have any additional questions, please email Michael Butrico, Assistant Rec Director, at, or call the Springfield Recreation Department at (973) 912-2227.

There are two distinct programs that are offered simultaneously - Recreation Basketball and Travel Basketball:

(1) Recreation Basketball is open to all eligible registrants in accordance with players' 2017-2018 school grade.  Registration forms can be found on the 'Headlines' section, on the top-right section of our home page, under the link: "2017 - 2018 Recreation Basketball Registration"

Clinic Play is open to Springfield girls and boys currently in Pre-K through 2nd grade.  The weekly clinics are held on Sundays, from January 7 - March 4, at the FMG Middle School 'Boys' gym.  The $75 registration fee includes coaching instruction, t-shirt, Jr basketball, and dessert after the final clinic.  Registration instructions can be found on the Registration form from the link above.  Space is limited and registration will end early once the program is filled, so sign up soon!

League Play is open to Springfield girls and boys currently in 3rd through 8th grade. Following a mandatory evaluation process, balanced teams will be formed at each grade level.  Once weekly practices will begin in early November and regular season games will tip off in mid-December with playoffs scheduled for early March.  All regular season games will be held at FMG Middle School on Saturdays or Sundays depending on the grade level.   The $100 registration fee includes weekly games and practices (coaching instruction, referees, scorekeepers, equipment, etc), and game shirt.  Registration instructions can be found on the Registration form from the link above.

(2) Travel Basketball, open to Girls in grades 4 - 8 and Boys in grades 3 - 8, is a competitive program that requires a high level of commitment:  2-3 practices/week, typically 2 games per week, travel to regional gyms for away games.  Players must attend mandatory try-outs and will be evaluated by a board of independent coaches and consultants.  If invited to join the team, players are expected to attend all practices and games.  At the younger levels playing time may be mandated by the league, however if not, playing time will be earned and not guaranteed.

To try-out for a travel team, players must register at before arriving.  There is no charge to register at this stage.  If invited to join a travel team, players must register with the Springfield Basketball Association to accept a roster spot.  Final travel registration cost is $165 and includes all practices, games, post-season tournament, and one in-season tournament.  For more information on the Travel programs, see the registration forms on the 'Headlines' section, on the top-right section of our home page, under the link: "2017 - 2018 Travel Basketball Registration"

NOTE:  Travel players are NOT mandated to register for Rec League Play, however, as playing time for many travel levels are not guaranteed, Rec League Play will offer additional practice and game time for all players.
