Cardinals 2011-2012 Season Ends at State Tourney
March 10, 2012
The 2011-2012 basketball season came to an end today for the Cheverus Cardinals with a loss against Trinity Catholic of Brockton at the CYO State Tournament in Milton. The boys played a good game against a very tough team and gave 100% effort right up until the end. There were flashes of brilliance at times and all the coaches were proud of the progress all the boys have made this year.
Break up/uniform return night is Monday night. Please be sure to return your washed uniform. Coach Mike and I will be reviewing goal cards individually and Coaches Pierre and Glenn will be organizing pick up games. Regular time...6:30-8:30.
Beginning Thursday night, the coaches will be hosting a clinic for all 6th and 7th grade players interested in being part of next years team. Going forward, the clinic will be by invitation only.
Finally, thank you to the Cheverus teachers, parents and loyal fans who supported us throughout the year. And a special shout out to the "brownie girl" who presented the coaches with their pre-tournament reward....the best brownie this side of the Tobin Bridge!

A TALE OF TWO HALF'S
The boys played their hearts out tonight. St. Agnes is the reigning State AND New England Regional champs. We definately earned some respect tonight. After shaking off some first half jitters, the Cardinals settled in and played some real basketball in the second half. If we could put the first half of our first game with St. Agnes together with the second half of tonights game, we'd be going into overtime. In our first game we were down 25-24 at the half. In tonights second half we took the advantage, 23-22. We will be working on putting those two half's together in practice next week.
A big thank you for all the support tonight by the teachers, parents, students, former players and fans. The turnout was nothing short of amazing.
Cardinal Boys Take Third Place in Brother Anthony Tournament
November 27, 2011
The 7&8 grade Cheverus boys posted a third place finish in the 38th annual Brother Anthony Tournament at MC after a dramatic come from behind win over St. Pius of Lynn. This game was truly a defensive slugfest. Trailing by 4 at the half with a score of 13-9, the Cardinals held St. Pius to 2 points in the third period and 2 points in the 4th. Meanwhile, the offense started to click and control the flow better.
The third place finish equaled last years effort in the tournament. Nice job guys.
A NOTE TO OUR FANS
Please try to refrain from shouting directions to the players during the game. With less than 2 minutes to play tonight we had just increased our lead to 10 points. We had instructed our boys to "ice" the ball....not to shoot and run time off the clock. We did not want to give up posession of the ball and give our opponent an opportunity to score. During that time, some of our fans were shouting "shoot the ball". One of our guys did, we missed and St. Pius got control and reduced our lead to 8. This is very confusing for the boys. We're telling them one thing and fans are shouting something completely different.
Please keep your comments to shouts of encouragement in the future and let us coach the boys.
Thank you.
Coach Charlie
Cardinals Win Season Opener 57-31
November 14, 2011
After two months of practice the Cardinal boys came out on fire against St. Mary's in their first regular season game scoring the first 15 unanswered points of the game. Nate Ilebode(15) and Brandon Beaubrun(4) played a physical inside game at both ends of the court while Lionel Walker(13), Alphonse Mutebi(8) and Francis Majabeke(6) moved the ball quickly up court with crisp passing. The subs didn't miss a beat and continue to maintain the lead. Off the bench, Ade Adeleke scored 5 while John Crowell, Joey O'Callaghan and Sean Buckley scored 2 points apiece.
While the offense was very strong, more work is needed on defense and keeping the fouling down. Back in the gym Thursday night!
2011 Eastern Massachusetts Champions
March 20, 2011
Congratulations to the 5&6 Grade Boys team and their coaches for winning the 2011 Eastern Massachusetts Championship over St. Francis of Braintree today at Milton High School. For the first time in history, the Cheverus boys will be hoisting a banner in the gym this fall.
They now advance to the New England Regional Tournament which runs April 1, 2 and 3 in Manchester, NH.
Good Luck boys!
Danny Ainge Drops In To Cardinal Scrimmage
December 22, 2008
Christmas came early for the Cheverus Cardinals as the boys were treated to a once in a lifetime opportunity when Danny Ainge dropped by the gym to watch his son play in a scheduled scrimmage with Coach Benzan's brother's team from Wellesley. When the referee's got tied up in holiday traffic, Ainge borrowed a whistle and officiated nearly the first half of the game.
While it was a somewhat lopsided contest, the boys seemed thrilled just to show their stuff to the President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics. After the boys settled in from some first quarter jitters, much offensive and defensive progress seems to have been made. We look forward to a successful second half.
Merry Christmas.
Coach Charlie
