Junior Cannons Win NLBL Championship
July 28, 2015
COLCHESTER — This past weekend was memorable for the Colchester Cannons junior baseball program. On Sunday, the Junior Cannons won the Next Level Baseball League (NLBL) title.
The Junior Cannons’ run through the double elimination NLBL playoffs included a string of six game in four days, including a necessary doubleheader sweep on the final day to bring home the championship. All tournament games were held at Saddlemire Field in Colchester.
After falling in their opening round game to the Vermont Jays, the Juniors reeled off three consecutive wins across two days to put them into Sunday’s championship round. The next challenge was to win twice against an OEC Lightning team that remained unbeaten through the tournament. In game one’s 3-2 win, the Juniors plated three runs in the fourth inning, thanks to Eben Provost, Tyler Daniels and Alex O’Connell, who all drew bases loaded walks. Starting pitcher Tucker Odum tossed a complete game with three strikeouts and three hits allowed.
The win set up a winner-take-all matchup for the league championship. Riding the rush of four wins, the Juniors dispatched the Lightning, 12-0. Chase Carey scattered three hits and fanned one batter to earn the win before Kelly Butts-Spirito shut the door with two relief innings of one-hit ball. After a scoreless first inning, the Juniors plated six runs in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth and one more in the sixth to reach the dozen mark as part of a 14-hit barrage. In the game, Alec Burns led the offense with three hits and three RBIs, while Butts-Spirito, Carey, O’Connell and Provost each provided two hits.
Overall, Provost totaled eight hits, while Burns added seven hits, six RBIs and two saves on the mound. O’Connell finished with six hits and three RBIs, and Carey collected two wins to complement his seven hits and five RBIs as a batter. To round out the JR Cannons pitching, Odum totaled two wins over the tournament and Jackson Root one.
The Juniors close out their season this weekend with a tournament set at home, beginning Friday and concluding Sunday. The team is coached by Jason Moore, Adam Provost and Tim Root.

The Cannons organization would like to thank this year's graduating players for being great leaders. We hope you continue on to great things both on and off the field. Make us proud!

Cannons Community Service Project A Huge Success!
The Cannons once again made the trip the VA Hospital in White River Junction to help the American Legion Women's Aux run their annual Christmas Gift Shop for all of the hospitalized veterans in the hospital. The Cannons players went to every room in the hospital and serviced 53 patients including those in the ICU and Ground East. A job well done to all of the players who committed to this very important community service project. As a side note, the Cannons have been doing this project each year since 2001!
