Cougars Finish 4 Game Weekend 3-1
In a big four game weekend, the LCCC Cougars picked up three much-needed victories over Atlantic Cape and CC of Morris. Saturday, Atlantic Cape made the trip up to Scherersville Park for a double-dip that saw the Cougars pound out 15 hits en route to a 15-2 victory. Dave Behler went the distance for the Cougars while breaking both the single season and career strikeout records at LCCC. At the plate, Andrew Stiegler was 3-4 with 4 RBI including a homerun, Allen Umbenhauer was also 3-4 with a double, 2RBI and 2 runs scored, while Justin Fizer and Kevin Parker each added two hits. Game 2 saw Atlantic Cape take advantage of some defensive mistakes made early by LCCC en route to an early 5-run lead. However, in the bottom of the 2nd inning Kevin Parker led off with a single and Greg Roman deposited a fastball deep over the left-centerfield fence. Lance Miller, Justin Fizer and Rocky Ferrier followed that up with 3 straight singles and the lead was cut to 5-3. After two hits opened up the top of the 3rd for Atlantic Cape, Cougars starting pitcher Derek Linkhorst dug back in and stranded both runners on base. In the bottom half of the third Kevin Parker again singled, Roman singled and Ryan Palsgrove walked to load the bases. Lance Miller drove a single to left scoring Roman and Parker, tieing the game and the Cougars never looked back. Derek Linkhorst picked up the win while Rocky Ferrier went 4-5 and Parker, Miller and Roman had 3 hits apiece.
Sunday, LCCC then travelled out to Division II Morris for a non-region doubleheader. John Torok started game 1 and went the distance yielding only 2 earned runs however fell victim to 4 Cougar errors and 4 unearned runs as LCCC dropped game 1 6-3.
In game 2 however, the Cougar offense exploded, pounding out 18 hits, scoring 20 runs and winning 20-10. Greg Roman started on the mound for LCCC, going 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Allen Umbenhauer, who went 1 1/3 innings before John Torok took the ball back to the mound and bulldogged his way to a 2-inning save after throwing a complete game in game 1. Offensively, Rocky Ferrier was 4-5 with 2RBI and 5 runs scored, Derek Linkhorst was 3-4 with 4RBI, Lance Miller was 3-3 with 4 runs scored, and Kevin Parker, Greg Roman and Andrew Stiegler had 2 hits apiece.
The Cougars are back in action Tuesday evening 4/17 at home for a single game against Lehigh.
Cougars Split Doubleheader With Bergen
The Cougars travelled out to Paramus, NJ today for a doubleheader with Bergen Community College and in the top of the first of game 1, plated two runs and that was all that was needed for starting pitcher Dave Behler. Behler went the distance, striking out 9 and yielding only two hits en route to a 9-0 victory. Offensively, the Cougars were paced by Kevin Parker and Andrew Stiegler who each had two hits and 2RBI and Greg Roman with 2 hits, 3RBI and 3 runs scored.
Game two saw the Cougars have at least one runner in scoring position 5 out of 7 innings, but could only muster 1 run, an RBI single by Andrew Stiegler. John Torok threw 6 complete, scattering 6 hits and 4 runs to the Bulldogs but fell victim to the Cougars inability to come through with timely hitting and took the loss 4-1.
The Cougars are back in action 3/27 for a home doubleheader against Bucks.
Cougars Split Twin Bill With Middlesex County College
The Cougars split their doubleheader with Middlesex County College this afternoon. The Cougars won Game 1, 3-2 in 8 innings before dropping the night cap 4-3. In game 1 Dave Behler threw a complete game(8 innings) striking out 9, while giving up one earned run. The story of the game was not only about his arm on the mound.
In the top of the 8th inning, Behler hitting for himself, came through with a base hit on his first swing of the day. He moved to third on a base hit by Kevin Parker, before scoring the game winning run on a double steal. Parker, Greg Roman, and Dan Brooks-Wells each added two hits a piece in the win.
In Game 2, John Torok threw 5 plus innings giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 5. Justin Fizer and Roman led the offensive attack for the Cougars registering two hits a piece. The Cougars first home game is on on Sunday, March 18 vs. Cumberland County College at Scheresville #5. The first pitch is slated for 12 PM.
Cougars Drop Two In Opener With National Powerhouse Gloucester
The LCCC Cougars' 2012 campaign kicked off with an opening doubleheader against the Roadrunners of Gloucester County. Gloucester came into the day ranked 2nd in the nation boasting a pitching staff led by D-I bound Bob Applegate and returning 14 starters from a run to the National Championship Series last year. Applegate threw all 7 innings of game 1 and held the Cougars to 4 hits. On the Cougars side, after yielding 2 homeruns with 1 out in the 1st, Dave Behler held the Roadrunners scoreless into the 6th inning. A dropped Flyball allowing 3 unearned runs to plate in the 6th off of Freshman Jared Flores, sealed the fate of the Cougars. Game two saw a lot of the same from John Torok for the Cougars. After yielding 4 runs in the first 2 innings, Torok settled in for the middle innnings but the Cougars could not get to left hander Jeff Singer for GCC. Singer held the Cougars to two hits while not yielding a run. The lone bright spot offensively for the Cougars came off the bat of freshman Justin Fizer. Fizer was 3 for 5 on the day accounting for 3 of the 6 total hits the Cougars had for the doubleheader. LCCC is back in action Sunday 3/11 as they will be travelling to Middlesex for a twinbill.
Cougars Helping To "Make Strides"
The LCCC Baseball team will be participating in the "Making Strides" 5K walk/run to help fight breast cancer on Saturday October 29th at 9am and donating a portion of the proceeds from the LCCC Homerun Derby held on November 5th.
