THE BEGINNING

1958 - 2008

50th ANNIVERSARY
OF THE
DERRY AREA MIDGET FOOTBALL PROGRAM

IN 1958, TWO MEN HAD A VISION TO GIVE THE YOUTH FROM THE DERRY AREA AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN THE GAME OF FOOTBALL AND ALL THAT COMES WITH IT: HARD WORK, LOYALTY, DEDICATION, AND BEING PART OF A TEAM. ANDY PATRICK AND AL MIKESELL HUNG A FLYER AT DERRY WESTINGHOUSE WHERE THEY WORKED ASKING FOR ANYONE INTERESTED IN FORMING A LEAGUE TO PLEASE COME TO A MEETING. ONE PERSON ATTENDED, JOHN GELSDORF, WHO BECAME THE FIRST COACH OF THE WOLFPACK.

THUS, THE DERRY AREA MIDGET FOOTBALL PROGRAM WAS BORN.

MR. MIKESELL BORROWED MONEY TO PURCHASE USED UNIFORMS FROM JEANNETTE IN ORDER FOR THE TEAM TO BE ABLE TO PLAY. FOR THIS REASON ONE OF THE MAIN OBJECTIVES WAS NEVER TO HAVE MONEY BE AN ISSUE IN DECIDING WHETHER A CHILD WOULD BE INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM. IN ALL THE 50 YEARS OF THE ORGANIZATION’S EXISTENCE, NO CHILD HAS EVER PAID TO PARTICIPATE AS A PLAYER OR CHEERLEADER.

DAMF’S TEAM NAME “WOLFPACK” AND ITS ORIGINAL COLORS OF RED AND WHITE WERE ADOPTED FROM NORTH CAROLINA STATE WHERE ONE OF THE COACHES OF THE ORGANIZATION, ED GELSDORF, PLAYED HIS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. THE TEAM COLORS REMAINED THE SAME UNTIL RECENTLY WHEN IT WAS DECIDED TO CHANGE TO BLUE AND GOLD TO SHOW A UNITY WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND ITS TEAM COLORS.

CHEERLEADING SQUADS WERE ASSEMBLED FOR EACH OF THE THREE TEAMS. THE YOUNGEST TEAM IS KNOWN AS THE PUPS, FOLLOWED BY THE LOBOS WITH THE OLDEST OF THE PARTICIPANTS BEING KNOWN AS THE WOLFPACK. AN INSTRUCTIONAL SQUAD WAS LATER ESTABLISHED TO INVOLVE EVEN YOUNGER PLAYERS.

AS EACH TEAM OF CHILDREN HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAM SO HAVE THEIR PARENTS SERVING AS OFFICERS, COACHES AND VOLUNTEERING THEIR TIME TO MAKE THE ORGANIZATION AS SUCCESSFUL AS IT STILL IS TODAY.

TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DAMF PROGRAM, A HUGE FUNDRAISER TO BUILD A PAVILION AND STORAGE AREA FOR THE USE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND DAMF WAS UNDERTAKEN. WITH DONATIONS FROM INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES, AND WITH THE VOLUNTEERISM OF MANY, THE PAVILION IS IN ITS LAST STAGES OF COMPLETION ON THE PRACTICE FIELD OF THE DERRY AREA HIGH SCHOOL COMPLEX.
