FJS Families, Sportsmanship is at Risk:

FJS Families, Sportsmanship is at Risk:

Recently a number of players and families have expressed concern over coaches who are placing a priority on winning and playing more skilled players in preference to their less skilled teammates.  We have even had a few players quit the league over this issue.

The following reiterates our core values and beliefs:

FJS Soccer is a Federal Non-Profit organization that has a long tradition of putting family fun first on the soccer field. We value fun and sportsmanship above all while having great fun on the field playing soccer. Our community league has been on the field continuously in one form or another for more than 20 years.  Our member families know that in the end the most important lessons learned on the field have more to do with lifelong values and healthy fun than being superstars.

FJS Soccer does not value winning over fun and sportsmanship.  This is why the league asks coaches NOT to keep score and we do not post game statistics or standings on our website.  The fundamental value in this league is using soccer as a way to teach good sportsmanship and family fun.  Coaches are reminded that this is a community (i.e., ‘non-competitive”) league.  Putting pressure directly or indirectly on kids to win conflicts with our primary goals as an organization.

FJS Soccer wants every player to have equal playing time on the field regardless of skills.  We teach that sharing our time with others gives value to everyone who is working as a team to play well.  Keeping better players on the field more than less skilled players sends a poor message about teamwork.  It also gives those who most need time on the field to become better soccer players less opportunity to grow as players.

Some league-wide guidelines:

·       Fun and Sportsmanship are #1 always.

·       Score is never kept.

·       As such, no team should ever display gloating or other unsportsmanlike celebrations.

·       With no scoring, no end of game shoot-out is ever needed.

·       All players get equal playing time in every division.

·       Player safety is a priority – safety equipment must always be worn.

·       Coaches do not change rules or play from league guidelines on the field.

·       Referee decisions are the final word on the field.  Coaches must support them and insure their families and players do as well.

·       Games ALWAYS end with players from each team lining up and congratulating the other team on a game well played.  “Good game!”

Some division specific rule reminders:

Munchkins:

·      We play four on four with no goalie.

·      The field is one quarter of the full field only.

·      Four ten-minute quarters are played.

·      Coaches are to substitute and rotate players every five minutes.

·      Coaches are on the field to the side of players not in the middle where they can block vision and play.

·      The focus is just to get comfortable kicking the ball and moving it down the field.

Division 1:

·       We play six on six:  3 forward, 2 defenders and 1 goalie.

·       The field is one quarter of the full field only.  Coaches are NEVER to expand to half the field.

·       Coaches should be on the field in a corner to have a good view of the field without getting in the way.

·       Coaches should use whistles to signify start and stop of play as appropriate.

·       Four ten-minute quarters are played.

·       We begin teaching corner kicks, goal kicks and throwing in.  We focus on teaching the skill, so ‘do-overs’ should be used to help players learn.  If the second try is still off, just go on playing the game.

·       We also begin coaching kids that this is not a contact sport, so pushing, shoving, ‘checking’, etc… are to be discouraged.

Division 2:

·       This is the first division where the playing field is expanded.

·       Referees are on the field and make all calls.

·       Coaches and parents are not to make calls or interfere with referees in any way.

·       In the first two quarters a player with incorrect throw-in will be given a second chance before turning over possession.  During the last two quarters no second chance will be granted.

·       Four 12-minute quarters are played with 4-minute breaks between each.

·       The team with possession of the ball only substitutes players.

·       Pushing, shoving, tackling, tripping will be called.  Players who repeat this action may be reported to their coaches for time off the field to reinforce the rule

Division 3:

·       Referees are on the field and make all calls.

·       Coaches and parents are not to make calls or interfere with referees in any way.

·       Two thirty-minute halves are played with a five-minute halftime.

·       The team with possession of the ball only substitutes players.

·       Pushing, shoving, tackling, tripping will be called.  Players who repeat this action may be reported to their coaches for time off the field to reinforce the rule.

As always, if there is any behavior on the field by players, families, coaches or referees that anyone in the league has a concern over, they should email the league directors at fjssoccer@gmail.com.
