Lewis, Roseboom lift LaSalle past Guilderland
Amar Lewis drove in three runs, and Dave Roseboom pitched a three-hitter as LaSalle eliminated Guilderland from the Section II Class AA baseball tournament Saturday with an 8-1 quarterfinal victory.
Lewis had two doubles and a single for the unbeaten Cadets (24-0), who entered the game ranked No. 1 in the state. Kyle Charron had three singles and an RBI, and Jared Reardon had two singles and an RBI to back Roseboom, who struck out six.
Nick Ranalli led 2007 Class AA champ Guilderland (14-12) with a double, single and two stolen bases. Steve Anderson added a RBI double.
LaSalle and Bethlehem, a 6-1 winner over Shaker, will meet in a semifinal game Wednesday at Joe Bruno Stadium.

Andrew Simpson had a pair of doubles and a single for the Dutchmen, Jake Colavito had a home run, single and three RBI and Matt Zanotta had a home run and a double.
Joe Borowski hit a double and single for the Patriots (10-14).

GUILDERLAND — Jeff Carter got better as Wednesday’s Suburban Council baseball game with Shenendehowa and Guilderland progressed, while the Dutchmen did a slow fade.
Carter pitched five innings of shutout ball after giving up a run in the first, and the Plainsmen scored five unearned runs after miscues by the reigning Section II Class AA champions in a 6-2 victory.
Guilderland ended up with fi ve errors, the same number of hits it accumulated against the righthanded Carter.
“You can’t give any team at this level extra outs, and a team of their caliber, you can’t give them anything,” Guilderland coach Doug LaValley said. “If we make plays, it’s a ballgame.”
It may have been, with Carter opposed by Siena College-bound C.J. Sohl in a matchup of elite Class AA moundsmen. But while Shenendehowa backed its pitcher with a steady defensive effort, Guilderland crumbled behind its ace. The Dutchmen committed three errors in the third inning, when Shenendehowa collected four hits and scored four times with two outs to break a 1-1 tie.
“I was shocked by their defense early in the game. They’re usually a lot better than that,” said Shenendehowa coach Jim Carrese. “But you’ve also got to give my kids credit for putting the ball in play, and making things happen.”
Alex Gong and Bryan Marotta both had a double, single and two runs batted in for the Plainsmen (9-3, 15-4), David Balsalmo tripled, Bryan Hunter singled and scored two runs and Tim Jones also scored twice.
“It’s always good when you get offensive support,” said the Oneonta-bound Carter, who struck out five, walked three and allowed one earned run. “When you get fi ve, six runs, it’s easier to pitch.”
Carter issued two of his walks in the first inning, with Ivan Plata drawing the first and stealing a base before Jake Colavito stroked an RBI single. Carter allowed only one free pass and four singles after that frame, including Chris Murray’s seventhinning, two-out RBI hit that came after Shenendehowa’s lone error.
“He [Carter] settled in after the first inning. At first, I think he was a little nervous,” said Marotta, a sophomore catcher. “After that, he started getting his curve over, and his change was really working.”
“I had two rough starts in a row. This was a redemption start for me,” Carter said. “I pitched to my ability, and helped my team get a big win.”
Guilderland (7-5, 11-9) helped, too.
“It came down to communication and making plays, and we didn’t do it,” LaValley said. “We’ve got to fi gure it out.”
Jones walked to start Shenendehowa’s second inning, and scored on a two-out throwing error to tie the game at 1-1. Hunter hit a one-out single in the third, took second base on an outfield throwing error and advanced to third on a flyout. Marotta followed with an RBI single. Back-to-back infield throwing errors led to another run, and after Travis Belleard singled to load the bases, Gong delivered a two-run double.
Marotta hit a two-out RBI double in the fourth as the playoff-bound Plainsmen went up, 6-1. The Blue Division-leading Plainsmen entered the game ranked No. 10 in the state.

Ivan Plata had three singles as Guilderland defeated Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 6-2. Pat Quinn had two singles for the Dutchmen (7-4, 11-8), and Andrew Simpson hit a two-run double. Keaton Flint had two singles for the Spartans (1-10, 3-14).
Jason Westerevelt went 6 1/3 innings giving up only 5 hits while fanning 6. CJ Sohl came in in relief and on his second pitch coaxed Jay Chernosky into a soft liner back to the mound which Sohl caught and flung to second base for a game ending double-play.
It was Westervelts' second straight winning effort. Westervelt has only given up 4 runs in his last two starts. He has added a spark that the Dutchmen need going into the final two weeks of the season.

Chris Schafer led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and scored on Jordan Kaplan’s double as Ballston Spa rallied past Guilderland, 7-6.
Shafer also had three hits total and two RBI for the 3-7, 6-11 Scotties. Kaplan finished with three hits.

Guilderland hands George Washington High first baseball loss
Jason Westervelt pitched a threehitter, and Guilderland dealt nationally ranked George Washington its first loss of the season, 6-2, in the semifinals of the Northeast Elite Tournament Saturday at Clarkstown.
Pat Quinn hit two doubles to back Westervelt, who struck out four. New York City’s George Washington came into the game with a 33-0 record.
Steve Anderson had a triple, single and four RBI, Jimmy Quinn had double, single and three RBI, and Guilderland beat Tottenville, 10-7, in the first round.
Ivan Plata added two singles and three runs for the reigning Section II Class AA champion Dutchmen (8-5), who will play either Clarkstown South or James Monroe in today’s championship game.

Pat Quinns leaping catch saves win for Dutchmen

Center fielder Pat Quinn made a game-saving catch with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh, preserving Guilderland’s 7-5 win at Niskayuna.
The Dutchmen were outhit, 14-5, but scored in five of seven innings to go to 4-2 in the Suburban Council.
Mike Krasadomski had a double and single for Niskayuna, which also saw Dan Peters, Gregg Rahn and John Moore all finish with a pair of singles.

CJ Sohl went the distance while fanning 10 Blue Streaks. The Dutchmen next play at Niskayuna in a make up game Thursday May 1 at Niskayuna High.

Walk-off Slam lifts Devils past Dutchmen

Patrick Puentes smacked a walkoff grand slam as Columbia rallied to beat Guilderland, 11-7.
After the Dutchmen scored three times in the sixth and tied the game, 7-7, with a run in the seventh, Puentes blasted his winning grand slam, his second homer of the game. Puentes finished with six RBI.
Guilderland got home runs from Jake Colavito, Steve Anderson and Jimmy Quinn.

Eagles pin first defeat on Dutchmen
Lucas Nitsche and Will DeRuve combined for five hits and seven runs batted in, and Bethlehem dealt Guilderland its first loss of the season, 11-8, in a Suburban Council game Friday.
Nitsche had a triple, two singles and four RBI, while DeRuve had a double, single and three RBI to help the Eagles go to 3-0 in the league and 6-1 overall.
Nick Ranalli and Ivan Plata both had two singles for the Dutchmen (2-1, 3-1), last year’s Section II Class AA champions.

Ranalli had two doubles, a single and an RBI for the Dutchmen, 2-0 in the league and 3-0 overall. Jake Colavito added a double and single for the reigning Section II Class A champions, while Robert Tedesco and David Hondro both had a double and single for the Mighty Warriors (1-1, 2-1). Tedesco drove in two runs.

Steve Anderson hit a single to drive in the tying and winning runs in the seventh for Guilderland (1-0, 2-0). He also had a solo homer and a double, and Jake Colavito had two singles. The Dutchmen next take on the Mohonasen Warriors Wednesday at Guilderland High. Game time is 12 Noon.

Baseball: 5 players to watch, 5 dates to remember

Five players to watch
LARGE SCHOOLS
1. Amar Lewis (Sr., La Salle): A fifth-year starter who played a vital role in four straight Big 10 titles, Lewis batted .466 and drove in 24 runs in 2007.
2. Jake Colavito (Sr., Guilderland): He drove in 25 runs as a junior, helping the Dutchmen capture the Section II Class AA title. Will next play at Division I Stetson University in Deland, FL.
3. Will DeRuve (Sr., Bethlehem): Set to next play at Division I Manhattan of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, DeRuve has steadily improved his all-around game.
4. Joe Poleto (Sr., Colonie): Set a school record in 2007 with a .550 average, hitting safely in 18 of 19 games. The fleet-footed outfielder was a 2007 first-team Suburban Council all-star.
5. Dave Fischer (Sr., Burnt Hills): The lanky right-hander is one of the area's premier pitchers. He'll pitch at the University of Connecticut.
Five dates to remember

1. La Salle at Amsterdam, April 16, noon: First-year Amsterdam coach Robert Noto thinks his club could surprise in the Big 10 this season as his Rams get an early crack at the defending champs.
2. Guilderland at Colonie, April 22, 4 p.m.: The reigning Section II champion Dutchmen are looking to repeat and once again compile the Suburban Council's best record. Guilderland beat Colonie last year at home.
3. CBA at La Salle, April 23, 4 p.m.: The Brothers, led by sluggers Mike Patnode, Josh Lewyckyj and Chris Sand, split two regular-season games with the Cadets in 2007 and are looking to end La Salle's four-year Big 10 title reign.
4. Guilderland at Columbia, April 24, 4 p.m.: The Dutchmen and Blue Devils are part of a Gold Division that also features Bethlehem and Ballston Spa. All four figure to have something to say about which team emerges from the area's best division.
5. Shenendehowa at Colonie, May 5, 4 p.m.: These rivals have often decided Suburban Council Blue Division supremacy. Will this season be any different?

PITCHERS MUST IMPROVE EVERY SINGLE DAY

Houston, Tex - One of the toughest sells in being a pitching coach is to constantly remind your pitchers that they need to continually improve each and every facet of their game.
It is so easy to rely on a good fastball or a good breaking ball or the fact that you have good control. We are often convinced that the level of success we are achieving now is a birthright and will continue on for the rest of our lives.
What I recommend is somewhere in your facility, or at your school you have the following message for your pitchers where they can clearly see it every day...
"Every level that you go up, the strike zone will become smallerand smaller and the hitters will become better and better.
"The hitters that you dominate today will be through with their careers tomorrow and the only hitters that will be left are the ones that give you great trouble today"
We rtepeat it on almost a daily basis at Pitching Central to remind our pitchers of what the real world really looks like.
What does this mean?
We must always be improving our fastball no matter how hard we throw because what is good enough today will not be good enough tomorrow.
We must always be improving our breaking ball no matter how nasty our stuff... making it look more and more like a fastball, creating later and later action or break and being able to throw it for a higher percent of strikes in 0-0 counts and being able to bury it in hard to hit but yet irresistible locations in 0-2 and 1-2 counts.
We must constantly be improving our change-up also making it look like our fastball and be able to locate it in fastball counts 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and 3-1.
We must constantly be improving our command and therefore our ability to be continually "pressing" on the hitter and forcing them to swing earlier in the count.
We must be constantly improving the health and durability of our shoulder, elbow and arm because as we move up in levels the margin for error shrinks and our ability to recover and to still be effective even when we are extended increases dramatically.
So whenever I see one of my players trying to put it in neutral and coast downhill, I remind him of what the future holds. I point to the sign or remind him of the message.
The past is gone forever and we can no longer affect it.
Tomorrow is nothing more than a promissory note. The only thing we can truly affect is right now, today. This moment!
In closing, I have often said that "intent" is the most important thing in improving one's velocity.
