Knights Punch Ticket to WBA Finals
After a two year hiatus the Haugen Knights return to the WBA State Finals. After losing in the semi-final round the past two seasons to perennial title competitors, the Knights broke through for their seventh state appearance in the last decade. That outcome was in jeopardy Friday night as the Knights spotted Marshfield a 4-0 lead through the first few innings. The Knights were able to battle back and win 7-4 to survive and advance.
Sunday was a different story as the Knights were the ones to jump out to a 4-1 lead over Tilden. Ryan Gerber launched a back-breaking three run shot in the bottom of the seventh to extend the lead to 7-1 and give the Knights a comfortable lead heading into the final two innings. The final score ended up 8-3 as the Knights clinched their finals birth, and ended up as one of three Independent League teams to make the group of eight that will compete next weekend for the state title. Spooner and Brill, the 2nd and 3rd seeded teams out of the Indy also won their Semi-Finals to clinch a state berth. Brill is a familiar face at the finals as they have had very similar playoff success along with the Knights, and Spooner clinched their first state birth with a nail-biting 8-7 win over Plum City at the Haugen Ballpark. Congrats to all three squads.
The Knights face defending WBA champions Sparta Miller Friday night at 9pm in Viroqua. Brill faces Menomonie in the game before at 6pm, with the winners facing off Saturday afternoon.
