HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
The head of the nation's largest veterans organization was in Hattiesburg Tuesday night, as part of a statewide tour. James E. Koutz is the national commander of the American Legion. He visited the Hub City's Allen B. Carter Post 24.
He said he's concerned about major cuts in military spending which could take place on March 1, if Congress fails to reach a deal on the budget.
"We're hoping that there are no cuts in the Dept. of Defense or the Veterans Administration," Koutz said. "With all these thousands of troops coming home in the next five years, with the backlog of claims they've got right now, we're worried about what's going to happen there if we've got budget cuts. We're worried about that and we're worried about the protection of this country," he said.
Koutz said he'll speak with the President about the impact of those potential cuts later this month.
There are currently 2.4 million members of the American Legion

The Allen B. Carter Post 24 of The American Legion in Hattiesburg awarded its $1,000 AJ Jones Scholarships at their annual Baseball Banquet on September 11,2012. Honored was two outstanding High School seniors and one College Freshmen on its Hub City Bombers American Legion Baseball Senior Team. Post 24 Commander Mark Herrington presented the scholarships for outstanding achievements on Post 24’s Hub City Bombers team to: Cort Brinson of Oak Grove High School who has signed with North Western LA. College, Tyler Graves of Petal High School who has signed with Jones Jr. College and Tyler Simmons of Sumrall High School, who has signed with Copiah Lincoln College.
Post 24’s scholarship is named in honor of Mr. AJ Jones of Hattiesburg, who played on the first American Legion Baseball team of Post 24 in 1937 and who passed up a possibly promising career in baseball to fight for his nation in World War II. AJ Jones has always been a huge supporter of American Legion Baseball, the premier amateur baseball league, and he even played softball up to age 70.
The Hub City Bombers is made up of a senior and a junior team, ages 15-19, and represents a wide area of the Pine Belt. Post 24’s manager Mark Herrington is looking forward to the 2013 season and advises any player who lives within the recruitment boundaries may try out for the team.
Since 1925, The American Legion has sponsored a nationwide youth baseball program. During these past eight decades, millions of young players have enjoyed playing baseball. The American Legion and their 2.8 million members have raised millions of dollars each year for players to learn the importance of teamwork, discipline, leadership and good sportsmanship. The American Legion sponsors American Legion Baseball to give players an opportunity to develop their skills, personal fitness, leadership qualities and to have fun.
American Legion Code of Sportsmanship I will: Keep the Rules; Keep Faith with my teammates; Keep my temper; Keep myself fit; Keep a Stout heart in defeat; Keep my pride under in victory; Keep a sound soul; A clean mind; And a Healthy body
