RECAP of the 2013-2014 Grizzly Freshmen Basketball Season

The freshmen basketball team, like most freshmen teams, faced a steep learning curve at the beginning of the season.  The players worked hard and maintained a positive attitude throughout, and while playing good basketball early in the season, struggled at times with consistency and game results.  The freshmen finished the non-league portion of their schedule with a 5-7 record, including a 2-2 finish during the always-competitive Vista Murrieta Holiday Tournament.

When the first round of league play finished, it became clear that the Avocado East League title would go through San Marcos.  After a 51-25 drubbing at the hands of cross-town rival San Marcos in the 3rd game of league play, the freshmen finished the 1st half with a 3-1 record.  The players knew that they would have to win the next 4 league games to even have a shot at a share of the league title as it did not seem that San Marcos would lose another league game.  The freshmen accepted the challenge with a renewed enthusiasm and handily won the next 4 games against San Dieguito Academy, Escondido and San Pasqual twice to set up a first place showdown on the last scheduled game of the year at San Marcos.  Even though it was our second game of the day, the freshmen came out firing on all cylinders, especially on the defensive end.  They took a 19-13 halftime lead and overcame a furious San Marcos 2nd half comeback.  Mission Hills gave up the lead with less than 4 minutes left in the game, but stayed the course and sank 1 of 2 free throws with 7.2 seconds left.  They watched with trepidation as the final shot attempt for San Marcos went off the back of the rim.  Final score:  Mission Hills 36 San Marcos 35.

The freshmen finished 7-1 league play and were awarded Co-Champions of the Avocado East League for their efforts.  The freshmen ended the season on a 5 game winning streak, and won 8 of their last 9 games in route to a 12-8 overall record.

It is the 4th straight year that the Mission Hills Freshmen Basketball Team has won or shared a league title.
