Irvine - CA
Game one of the Orange County Collegiate League Championship was held Tuesday at Concordia University. After a long and hard fought regular season, the OCCL championship comes down to a best 2 of 3 series between Long Beach Legends – Blue and Long Beach legends – Red.
An in-house rivalry between both Legends teams, the OCCL championship has a big brother – little brother feel to it this year. The much anticipated series began Tuesday and game one lived up to the hype.
Regular season champions and #1 seed Legends – Red jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning, off Legends – Blue starter Nick Morton (Butler). Jake Reinhardt (Long Beach City College) and Tanner Negrette (CSU Stanislaus) both singled in runs in during the inning.
Given an early lead, Legends – Red starter George Alamillio (Pepperdine) cruised through five innings only allowing one run on three hits. The run surrendered by Alamillio in the 4th was the first earned given up by the Pepperdine freshman all summer, scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Chris Neal (Azusa Pacific).
Alamillio ran into trouble during the top of the 6th, down 4-1, Legends – Blue loaded the bases with two outs in the inning when Warren Fishback (CSU San Bernardino) came to the plate and drove a ball to the right field corner, just sneaking it over the fence for a grand slam that gave Legends – Blue a 5-4 lead.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the 8th, when Ryan Erickson (Loyola Marymount) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 5-5 going into the 9th.
With the game tied in the top of the 9th and a runner on first, Legends – Blue 3rd baseman Warren Fishback drove a pitch to the right field gap, scoring Ray Patchen (CSU San Marcos) and giving the Legends – Blue a 6-5 lead. Legends – Blue added on three more runs in the 9th to push them to a 9-5 win and take a 1-0 lead in the best of three series.
Warren Fishback ended the day for Legends – Blue 4-4 with a double, grand slam and five RBI. Gerardo Herrera (Lane JC) got the win for Legends- Blue striking out the only batter he faced in the bottom of the 8th. Legends – Red was led offensively by Andrew Yazdanbakish (UNLV), Michael Farris (UC Riverside) and Zack Ferreria (NW Missouri) who each has two hits apiece.
