Tears streamed down many of the Haynes players’ faces after their Division II quarterfinals game against St. Thomas More as they watched their season suddenly fall short.
The sixth-seeded Cougars broke open a tied contest in a six-run eighth inning to down the No. 3 Yellow Jackets 9-3. The win sends St. Thomas More (23-9) back to Sulphur for the fourth-straight season.
“We got ahead and scored some runs,” St. Thomas More coach Andria Waguespack said. “We tightened up after they scored those runs, and we just really focused on relaxing. These opportunities don’t always come along. On a beautiful day like today, you just want to take advantage of just being able to play and we really stressed that.”
The Cougars will play second-seeded Hannan in a Division II semifinals game on April 26 at Frasch Park in Sulphur at a time to be determined. The Hawks beat St. Charles 9-1 in their quarterfinal game.
Haynes (18-4) and St. Thomas More were tied at three headed into extra innings. Yellow Jackets starting pitcher Olivia Indorf recorded two quick outs via a groundout and strikeout to start the eighth frame. Leadoff hitter Molly Perry laced a double down the left field line, and Meredith Perry chased her home on an infield single to take a 4-3 lead.
Pitcher Paityn Desormeaux picked up an RBI double at the next at bat. Haynes would intentionally walk Madison Prejean to put runners at first and second bases. Hannah Parker then crushed a three-run home run over the left field fence to put the Cougars on top 8-3. The catcher went 2-of-3 with the home run and four RBIs.
“She walked me last time and walked the person in front of me,” she said. “I said ‘It’s my time, and there’s two outs. There’s nothing to lose.’”
Another run scored on an RBI single to complete the scoring outburst for the Cougars. Desormeaux retired three straight Haynes batters in the bottom of the frame to send the St. Thomas More players rushing the circle to celebrate.
Haynes had its best chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when it loaded the bases with zero outs via two-straight singles and a walk. Alexis Couret struck out, Daela Claverie flied out in foul territory and Maddie Edmonson struck out to end the scoring threat.
“I think the pressure got to them a little bit,” Haynes coach Dawn Whitmer said. “I’m super proud of these kids. They’ve given me everything they could all season long. We just didn’t get the job done when it was needed.”
Haynes found itself in a 3-0 hole after St. Thomas More scored one run in the second inning and two runs in the third frame. The Yellow Jackets inched scored their first runs of the game in their half of the third inning when Jamie Weindel and Alexa Poche drew walks with two outs. Alexis Couret smashed a two-RBI double to right field to inch Haynes within 3-2.
Haynes tied the score at three in the fifth inning on a throwing error that allowed a Yellow Jackets base runner to score from second base. Couret paced Haynes at the plate by going 1-of-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Haynes could find itself back in this position in the near future, as the Yellow Jackets will graduate just two seniors.
“My third baseman is an eighth grader, and we had a bunch of freshmen out there,” Whitmer said. “We preach all year to these kids that they just have to get the job done. We had an amazing season.”
