Chicks form a clique

Semi-pro team loaded with talent, held together with camaraderie

By Freddy Valencia
Staff Writer

SALISBURY -- As you pull into the long driveway to the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex, the setting for the Perdue Chicks' baseball game resembles that of any high school game.

The outfield lights shine down on players who seem more focused on calling balls and strikes than waiting for the next deep fly ball, the bleachers are littered with a handful of fans made up of wives, girlfriends and children, and the players jokingly take verbal jabs at each other while they stand on base, waiting to be batted in.

The one thing that sets this semi-pro team apart from the likes of any local high school team -- they have been playing for their entire lives and their level of talent shows it.

The Chicks, one of five teams in the Eastern Shore Baseball League, is a semi-pro team that has been around since 1983. If you were to stumble across one of these games, chances are you would not label these guys as semi-pros. The team, as well as the rest of the ESBL, is loaded with current and former collegiate players, a few former major-leaguers, and more than its fair share of guys in their 20s and 30s, and even a few up into their 50s, who can't stand the idea of life without competitive baseball. With pitchers throwing in the high 80s and the introduction of wood bats five years ago, there is no lack of competition either.

Craig Shreeves, a former Salisbury University player and current manager for the Chicks, has been a member of the organization for 25 years. His career with the Chicks began in 1984, and in 1995 he took over as manager. Serving as manager has been no walk in the park for Shreeves, who is responsible for putting a competitive team on the field for every game.

"The most challenging part of being the manager is keeping the team together year to year," Shreeves said. "This is generally a college-aged league, so it gets pretty hard to keep the core together when you have a lot of young guys that either go away to school or go home during the summers, but we have been pretty good at filling all of the gaps."

One gap that Shreeves hasn't had to fill in a long time is the one occupied by another SU graduate, pitcher J.R. Dobson. A member of the Chicks for nine seasons, Dobson is the holder of nearly every Chicks pitching record. With pitches falling just short of 90 mph, Dobson's success has come as little surprise to fans and players alike.

"I love the game, I can't get away from it," Dobson said. "Playing for the Chicks in the ESBL has always been challenging. There is a lot of talent here, and I am constantly working hard to get better."

Dobson's love of the game has proven to be a consistent theme, not just for him, but for all of the Chicks.

"I've been playing since I was old enough to hold a baseball," said Tyler Riley (pictured above), catcher for the Chicks and another former SU player, who played his high school ball at Snow Hill. "I came to Perdue three seasons ago, and I love the camaraderie, the childhood friends, and the level of competition. I can't even put into words the level of enjoyment I get out of playing here" he said as he brushed the dirt off of his uniform after taking the brunt of a full-speed collision while covering home plate earlier in the game. "I love everything about the game, even when I take hits like I did earlier. Something about it just gets my blood flowing and gets me going."

Regardless of the wins, losses and eight ESBL regular-season championships in the last 14 years, the one thing that remains for all of these baseball fanatics is the love of the game -- a love so strong that these players have been able to form one of the deepest bonds despite age and background.

"I love baseball to death," Shreeves said. "I may be 20-25 years older than most of these guys, but the college guys, they keep me young. Mentally, I'm right there."
