Flyers Lose Home Openers to Pirates...

June 4, 2018

Flyers got to play their first two home games of the season against the Pickering Pirates on the newly renovated Town Park. Game #1 was flying by because of the zero's each team's pitchers were putting up. In the 7th, The Pirates leadoff hitter would reach on an error and would eventually come around to score what turned out to be the only run of the game. But in the bottom of 7th, Pirates pitcher still with a No Hitter going...walks 2 batters and a HBP loading the bases with just one out. Pirates bring in a pitcher from the bullpen who eventually got the final 2 outs of the game and picked up the save and helped to combine throwing a No Hitter. Pirates won this game 1-0. Star of the game for The Flyers was SP Bobby Gilligan. He threw a complete game 4 hitter (3 of the hits didn't make it past the pitchers mound) in the lose.

Game #2 would need extra innings to get a winner. Fast Forward to the bottom of the 6th. Flyers down 3-1, they are threatening to score with runners and 2nd and 3rd. A single to center would score one but a perfect throw would get the runner at home plate to keep The Pirates in front 3-2. Again, The Flyers would be threatening in the bottom of the 7th with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Another single to left would score one run to tie the game and putting runners again at 2nd and 3rd after a stolen base. But yet again, The Flyers can't score the winning run. Now in the 8th, The Pirates came to life and they scored 7 runs on 6 hits and eventually take this game 10-3 in extras. Stars of the game for the Flyers were 3B Braydon Longyear by going 2-3 with an RBI and SB and DH Bobby Gilligan was 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Also, CF Kyle Hogg was 2-4 with a run scored and a double. SP Joey Medhurst pitched 6 strong innings in his first outing for a no decision.

Flyers Lose Season Opener to Eagles...

Flyers played their first game of the 2018 season after a rainout versus the Whitby Chiefs. The Flyers travelled to play the Kendal Eagles in front a big crowd at Harvey Jackson Park. What started out as a pitching duel, turned into a convincing win by the Eagles. The Flyers scored one run in the 4th and took that slim lead into the 5th when the Eagles got on the board with a 2 run HR. Eagles would add another four runs in the 5th and take this game 7-1. Stars of the game for The Flyers were LF Braeden Fawcett by going 2-3 with a SB. 1B Cory Baker was 2-2 and SS Hunter Baker, CF Robert McNab were both 2-4. SP Bobby Gilligan was cruising along till the 5th and then seem to tire. He took the loss.

Two Long Time Flyers Offically Retire...

May 3, 2018

It truly was a sad day around the Flyers clubhouse when two well beloved, long time Port Hope Flyers decided to hang up their bat and glove. Second baseman Brandon Duck (#7) and Shortstop/Catcher/Outfielder Brett Jiggins (#44) both made the call this year to retire and enjoy life after baseball.

Duck was one of the most knowledge and smart ball players on that field. He kept it simple, did what he know he was capable of and played hard all the time. Duck was also a great team leader for the younger guys that have come up through the Flyers Organization. He played great defense, rarely struck out, put the ball in play and came up big when he was needed the most. He will be missed around the clubhouse.

Jiggy is arguably the best Flyer to ever put on Port Hope jersey. He was that 5 tool ball player that every team dreams about having and every team hated playing against. Jiggy could play any position he wanted to in the field with ease. He had speed to burn and brought a BIG left handed stick to the yard every game. Jiggy had fire in him for the game of baseball and everybody around the ball park could see that. Jiggy was a big part of the Flyers being around for so long and he truly will be missed on the field and the corner spot inside the clubhouse.

The Flyers Organization gives you both standing "O's" for what you meant and brought to this team! All the best to these great Flyers and their future endeavours.

Flyers Kick Off Their 50th Season in 2018...

The Port Hope Flyers will kick off their 50th season this coming year. Now lets take time to think about how rare this occurrence is in amateur baseball. A team existing for 50 years takes a lot of dedicated people over the years who love the game so much that they want to be involved to keep the team going whether it's players, coaches, mothers, fathers, girlfriends, wife's, and their fans. An organization that has players and coaches that want to play for every year for 50 years...truly amazing! This is a great accomplishment for The Flyers and the town of Port Hope.

The Flyers will open their season the same way they have opened in the past three years by playing the OSBA finalists, Whitby Chiefs. The doubleheader is Saturday May 12th starting at 12:00pm at Town Park. Come out and support your Flyers all year long!!

Flyers Go 2 and 2 in AA OBA Championships...

September 3, 2017

Flyers were underdogs all weekend. No one had given them a chance to win any games, let along 2 of them. Port Flyers played hard, played hurt and gave their all this weekend. Here are the results of their 4 games....

Game #1 took place in Port Hope against the defending Champions Exeter Express. A big fan support of Port Hope faithful showed and cheer on our Flyers which probably was the most exciting games in years. The Flyers came ready and jump on Exeter by scoring 2 runs in the 2nd inning and 2 runs in the 3rd inning. It stayed that way till the 6th with Exeter scored a run. Fast forwarding to the 7th when all the excitement began. With 1 out in the top of the 7th, The Flyers defense fell apart with 4 straight errors which in turn lead to 4 runs and a 5-4 lead for The Express. Jump to the bottom of the 7th and with 1 out again, The Flyers started to get going. A error and a walk put runners on 1st and 2nd for Bobby Gilligan. With a 2-2 count, Gilligan drove the ball high and deep to left center for a 3-run WALK-OFF Homerun to win this game 7-5. Stars of the game for The Flyers were C Tye MacInnis by going 2-3 and a RBI. Also, DH Bobby Gilligan was 2-3 with a HR, 3 RBI's and a walk. SP Mike McNaught shut down this offense all game long only allowing 4 hits. RP Joey Medhurst came in for the final 2 outs and stole the win.

Game #2, The Flyers had to travel down to Clarington to play another OSBA team in the Peterborough Tigers who got a bye from the 1st round. It didn't take long for the well rested Tigers to jump on The Flyers by scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning. Flyers offense was shut down the entire game by Peterborough's ace. The Tigers would add 4 more runs in the 6th and take this game 10-0. Stars of the game for The Flyers were LF Jake Tuomenin by going 1-1 and 3B Tye MacInnis, 2B Seamus Bourne and RF Kyle Hogg all went 1-2. SP Joey Medhurst took the loss.

Game #3, The Flyers switched diamonds in Clarington and faced the Niagara Falls Expos in an elimination game where the loser goes home. The Flyers sensing urgency, came out pounding the ball and jumped to a 4-0 lead into the 3rd inning but like all year long there defense struggled and allowed 3 runs on no hits with 2 errors allowing The Expos back in this game. In the 4th, The Flyers put this game to rest by scoring 7 runs and then another 5 runs in the 5th to take this game 16-4. Stars of the game were SP Bobby Gilligan by going 2-3 with 3 runs scored, a double, 4 RBI's and a walk. He also picked up the win in this game. 3B Jason Herbert was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, a double and a RBI. Also, RF Kyle Hogg and CF Robert McNab were 2-4 in this game.

Game #4, The Flyers had to race over to Harvey Jackson Park in Kendal to face the host team. It wouldn't be an OBA Championship without the long time rivals matching up again. The Flyers bats stayed hot and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning but Kendal would strike back with a run in the 2nd and 2 runs in the 3rd inning. This game stayed this way till the 6th when Kendal rallied with 2 outs to score 3 runs to make it 6-2. The Flyers had many chances get this game closer but in the end The Eagles were too much and eliminated The Flyers by a 6-3 margin. Stars of the game for The Flyers were SP Bobby Gilligan by going 2-3 with a RBI, RP Mike McNaught was 1-1 with a RBI and RF Kyle Hogg was 2-4 with a run scored. SP Gilligan started his 2nd straight game and again just ran out of gas in the 6th to take the loss.
