A BRIEF HISTORY

Surrey Masters Slo-Pitch League was originally formed in 1986 under the name of “Legion Over-Forty Co-ed Slo-Pitch League”.  The League took over from a league that was folding.  The league founders, Morley Garrett, Gord LaFleur, Terry Beatty and Frank Underwood got together and decided to form a new League.  They booked the field allocations (from the now-defunct league) with the Municipality of Surrey, and started to get things organized.

Each of these four league founders committed themselves to getting a team organized.   In the initial year (1986), there were a total of five (5) teams.  Each of the four founders headed up a team with a fifth team that joined from the Cloverdale Legion - which had played in the previous defunct league.

The following year (1987), the League expanded to six (6) teams when White Rock came on board.  By 1998, the League had become well-established - with twelve (12) teams consistently returning each season.  In 2004, the League adopted its first Constitution (amended in 2008 and 2011), which assisted the League with a structure – in order to move forward.

Since the League’s inception, all league games were self-umpired by a player from the designated ‘home’ team.  In 2007, the League Membership voted to bring in carded SPN (Slo-Pitch National) umpires.  Overall, this move proved to be successful.  In the fall of 2008, at the League;s AGM, it was voted by the League Membership to change the League name to Surrey Masters Slo-Pitch League – to better reflect the location; age group; and identity of our League.

With additional input, support and direction from the League's Executive, Players and Teams, Surrey Masters Slo-Pitch League will continue to grow and move forward, not only in the present, but in future seasons.
