U12 Boys are D-II Finalists
May 21, 2012
The SRSC Blackhawks (U12 Boys, D2) placed Second overall over 26 All-star teams in Hattiesburg at the MYSA President’s Cup this past weekend. The Blackhawks lost a close final to Pearl due to injury and the understandable fatigue of playing six games in less than 36 hours. The Blackhawks will return to action for the State Games of Mississippi in Meridian, June 16-17.
Fundraiser for Critically Injured Soccer Coach/Player
Robert ("Ziggy") Bilstein IV sustained a critical spinal cord injury on January 1, 2012. Robert was a goalkeeper for the adult men's Pascagoula Futbol Club (PFC). He has been a lifelong soccer player, coach, and fan. Friends are organizing a 3 v 3 Charity Soccer Tournament to raise money for Ziggy's rehabilitation. The tournament will be at the Jackson County Complex on June 16. The registration fee/donation is $100 per team. For more information click here.
U16 BOYS ARE STATE CHAMPIONS
May 7, 2012
Terry Holliday and his U16 Boys team were crowned State Champions for 2011-2012 this past weekend in Meridian. Although they lost in the semi-finals at the Southern District Tournament, they were asked to replace another team which failed to register for the state tournament. The team blew through their bracket, not yielding a single goal. In the finals, they faced an old nemesis, the always tough, George County squad. In the end, they came through, winning 2-0 over their rivals. SRSC is proud of the team, and sends its congratulations to them.
U8 Girls are State Finalists
Roland Reynolds and Laurin St. Pe’s U8 girls team also came in second in the first ever U8 State Cup Championship in Pearl, MS. The girls lost their first game to a very tough North West Rankin team, but fought hard to win their second and third games on that Saturday and went on to win their semi-final game on Sunday morning. The girls faced the same North West Rankin team again in the finals, and could not quite pull out a win. We are all so proud of how hard these young ladies worked and what they accomplished at state.
U14 and U12 Boys are Finalists at State
Mitch Haarala's U14 Boys ran through their bracket, not yielding a single goal to the opposition. However, in the Finals on May 6, the team crossed paths with the Columbus United squad, which is undefeated on the year. Columbus decimated their bracket, outscoring their opponents 25-0. Our U14 squad kept the game close, trailing only 2-1 into the 4th quarter due to an outstanding defense, great saves by our injured keeper, Jackson Graham, and a terrific, upper-90 goal by Taylor Crabtree. However, the north Mississippi team eventually wore down our Coast boys. In the end the final score was 4-1. Taylor Crabtree and Phillip Burrow led the scoring for the team in the tournament with three goals each. Jeff Bowman's U12 Boys showed their moxie and stamina, playing six games in less than 36 hours. They swept their bracket, survived a close semi-final after a two hour rain/hail delay, only to face Greenwood in the finals at 8pm on Sunday. Both teams showed great defense, ending regulation in a 1-1 tie. Unfortunately in the overtime, the breaks went against our hometown boys. Greenwood scored quickly in the final period, ending SRSC's Championship dreams. The final score, Greenwood 2; SRSC 1.
Losing is usually hard. But losing in the finals by one goal in overtime can be a back breaker. But our team held its head high knowing they had a great season under Coach Bowman. We expect to see this squad at State next year!
Three SRSC teams are District Champions
April 23, 2012 – 09:00 AM
Ten SRSC teams participated in seven divisions at the Mississippi Soccer Association's Southern District Tournament in Gulfport. Three SRSC teams will be moving on to the State Tournament, ALL OF THEM AS DISTRICT CHAMPIONS! Congratulations go out to our U12-SR2 (Jeff Bowman), U14-SR1 (Mitch Haarala), and U19-Flame (Will Denton) teams. They will compete in the D-III State Tournament on May 5-6 in Meridian. SRSC tied with Gulfport/SMSC for most division champions at the Tournament. Game results for the teams which competed at District can be found by clicking here. P.S. Props go out to Mitch Haarala's U14 team. In five games over two days, they did not allow a single goal to be scored against them. While the entire team deserves credit, an "atta-boy" goes to the team's keeper, Jackson Graham. A picture/story can be found on WLOX. Just click here.
