RIP- Andrew Smialek- St. Rita H.S. Class of 2008 Volleyball and Football Player- died of cancer on Friday, November 20th, 2009.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! BROTHER RICE VOLLEYBALL IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE FOLLOWING SPECIAL EVENTS:

1) TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 2ND- COLLEGE MEN'S VOLLEYBALL MATCH BETWEEN THE FIGHTING BEES OF ST. AMBROSE UNIVERSITY AND THE INAUGURAL ST. XAVIER UNIVERSITY COUGARS. The match will be played in the South Gym at Brother Rice on Tuesday, February 2nd at 7:00 PM. Come out and see many players for both schools from the South Side... a number of which played on SSBVL at area schools and parishes. For more information, go to www.brvolleyball.com.

2) SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH- INAUGURAL ILLINOIS VOLLEYBALL COACHES CLINIC AT BROTHER RICE. Guest presenters will include Kevin Hambly- Head Women's Volleyball Coach at the University of Illinois- Urbana-Champaign and Carl McGown- Former Head Men's Volleyball Coach at Brigham Young University and Former Head Men's Coach of the U.S. National Team. 3) MONDAY, MAY 17TH- OUTDOOR MATCH BETWEEN BROTHER RICE AND MARIST AT GARY LITTLE STADIUM AT BROTHER RICE. More information on this first of a kind event in Illinois volleyball history will be posted soon!

UPDATE! 2010 MEN'S COLLEGE NEWS:

- The 2010 season begins in January- there are many exciting developments to announce:

- Congratulations to Head Caoch Bob Heersema and the St. Xavier University Cougars for adding men's volleyball as a varsity sport starting this year. The inaugural team will start the 2010 season with a home match on Wednesday, January 13th at St. Xavier University's Shannon Center at 7:00 PM vs. D'Youville. Not only do we now have a local option to see some high level men's volleyball in our own backyard but this addition gives many more young men in our region the opportunity to compete in collegiate men's volleyball!

- Congratulations to Head Coach Bill Gleeson- SSBVL and Br. Rice alum- and the St. Ambrose University Men's Volleyball Program for being selected to host the 2010 and 2011 NAIA National Men's Volleyball Championships on their campus in Davenport, Iowa! The 2010 tournament will take place on Thursday, April 22nd and Saturday, April 24th, 2010. More will follow as information becomes availalbe.

- Congratulations to Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin for their selection as host of the 2010 NCAA Division III National Men's Volleyball Tournament Championship on Friday, April 16th and Saturday, April 17th, 2010.

The following schools in our area, city, state, and region now offer collegiate men's volleyball:

NCAA Division I: Lewis University in Romeoville, IL, Loyola University in Chicago, IL, Quincy University in Quincy, IL, Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

NCAA Division III: Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

NAIA: St. Xavier University in Chicago, Il, St. Ambrose university in Davenport, Iowa, Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, and cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
