Thurman leads Bantams to Victory in Season Opener

The home and season opener for the St. John's of Swampscott basketball program was an early battle with Saugus. Swampscott trailed by a point 14-13 with 3:30 to go in the half. But Swampscott applied full court pressure led by Travis Thurman to go on a 12-0 run and lead by 10 at the half. Thurman had 9 first half points. Colin O'Brian, Jack Fitzpatrick, and Alex Cormier each added 4 points. In the second half, Saugus tried to get back into the game. Back to back jumpers by AJ Venuti and Zach Carmosino helped put the game away. Swampscott rolled to an easy 45-33 victory. Travis Thurman dominated for Swampscott with 17 points,8 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block. Alex Cormier had 8 points and 5 rebounds. AJ Venuti and Gavin Sullivan helped on the boards with 6 rebounds each. The Bantams next game is Wednesday night at Medford.
Balanced Attack Leads Girls Bantam Victory

St. John's of Swampscott got off to an early 8-0 lead led by two baskets by Elizabeth Weisse. After a Winthrop basket, Jamie Caponigro set up Hannah Leahy to push the Swampscott lead to 12-2 with 7:50 to go in the half. St. John's of Winthrop closed out the half with a 5 point run to cut the lead to 12-7. Winthrop made a late push in the second half to close the gap to 7 points. Eleni Laskaris put the game away with a late jumper and St. John's of Swampscott won their home opener 26-13. Laskaris led Swampscott with 6 points. Jamie Caponigro, Kasey Kennedy, Hannah Leahy, and Elizabeth Weisse each had 4 points.
Girls Teams Fall to St. Pius in Opener
November 28, 2009
The Girls Bantam White lost to a strong St. Pius of Lynn team in their season opener. The veteran Swampscott team was never in the game against what may be the best Bantam CYO team in the North Shore.
The Girls Cadet team also lost to St. Pius. Emily Bray played well leading Swampscott with 10 points.
