Home of the 2009, 2008, 2007, 2004 and 2003 SFNABA League Champion San Francisco Isotopes Baseball
Welcome to the Isotope Dynasty!!
Pop Quiz Topes
fans, What do the Topes, NY Yankees, Chicago Bulls & the Oakland A's have
in common.
3-PEAT
BABY!!
It was another
great season for Isotope Nation. Once again your beloved Topes finished the
season wining the league championship. Out of the last 3 season this
championship was with out a doubt the hardest to obtain. The Topes faced lots
of adversity this season. Playing many games with only 9 players and having a
many different roster changes, but they still were able to finish the regular
season with the best record in the SFNABA for the third season in a row.
The Championship
Series was a debacle in its own right. Traditionally the final series is played
2 games on Sat and one on Sun if needed. Well this year with field
miscommunication the tradition was changed. There was a single game played on
Sat at probably the worst field in the league Big Rec. We avoided playing there
all season, and for some reason the championship game was there. Whose idea was
that!!
Game 1 was not
the prettiest game played. Both teams made quite a few mistakes, and the Topes
did not have any extra base hits. The Topes did have the lead the whole game
until the top of the 9th. Until the Bay Sox took advantage of some walks and
miscues by the Topes. They scored 3 times in the 9th and took a 6-4 lead and
won. The Topes Starter #23 Steve Molof pitched a fantastic game
Going into
Sunday's double header the Topes had a huge hole to climb out of. Knowing
hard it is to sweep a double header the Topes sent there #2 ace #7 Danny Harris
to the mound hoping he could keep them in the series. After the Bay Sox put up
a 3 spot in the first it started to look a little bleak for the Topes 3Peat
chances, but wait this is the Topes we are talking about. After scratching out
2 runs in the 5th and 6th the topes took a 4-3 lead it was up to Danny Harris
to hold the lead. The Topes were in control of Game one and #27 Eric Vargas
came in to shut the door on the Bay Sox. Topes win Game 2 10-6 and stay alive
to play game 3.
Game 3 was
looking to be in the Topes favor. They had there Ace on the mound #21 Joey
Stoval. Even though Joey had the blown save to allow the Bay Sox win game one
the Topes manager had to confidence put the championship in his hands. By the
start of game 3 both teams had been through an emotional roller coaster. The
Bay Sox looked drained and beat down. I guess that’s what happens when you
party at a wedding the night before. The Topes took an early lead and never
looked back. Joey Stoval was dominating the Bay Sox hitters, and they really
never had a chance. The Topes turned once again to #27 Eric Vargas to shut the
door, and for the second time that day he came away with the save, and he
clinched the championship for the Topes.
Congrats to the
Bay Sox for making it to the Championship. They played a great completive
series.
Thanks again to
all the fans that made it out to our games and for supporting the Topes all
season long.
Shocking!!!
Well Topes fans once again the Topes will be playing for the championship, but this time they did not even have to show up to the semi-finals. For the second time this season the Beavers had to forfeit. Only this time it put the Topes into the championship. You hate to advance this way, but the Topes will take it. Unfortunately the Beavers had a string of bad luck & some roster issues. Im am sure the Beavers will be back to there winning ways next season.
The Topes will face the Bay Sox in there third consecutive championship series. The Topes beat the Bay Sox back in week 4 10-5. I do know that the Bay Sox are a great hitting team with good pitching witch has potential for a very exciting series.
Come on out and route for the Topes.
Game 1 Sat 9/26 9am Flood Park
Game 2 Sat 9/26 1230pm Flood Park
Game 3 Sun9/27 10am Flood Park
Playoff Time is Here
Well Isotope fans it's that time of year again. Playoff time for
the third straight year the Isotopes have finished the regular season
with the best record in the SFNABA. With that the Topes earned a first
round bye and awaited the winner of the Blazers/East Bay Giants. Having
played both team twice in the regular season, and beating them both
twice. Either match up look like it would be a cake walk for the Topes.
The Topes ended up playing the Blazers, and it was far from a cake walk. This game came down to clutch hitting and defense.
The Blazers jumped out to a 5-0 lead, and to this point in the season the only time the Topes have trailed by 5 runs they
lost 5-4 to the All Blacks. isotope nation clearly had there work cut
out for them.
After manufacturing 1 run in the 4th and 1 in the 5th the
turning point in the game was in the 6th. After a walk and a hit the
Topes got booming triple off the bat of #25 Nikolas Tanaka to bring
the Topes within 1 at 5-4. the batter was #51 Cliff Berry who crushed a
ball that went at least 400ft and that put the Topes on top 6-5.
In
the top of the 7th the Blazers scratched out a run to tie the game at
6. All tied up at 6 the Topes needed some of their typical late inning
heroics. Isotope nation could breathe a little better after the Topes
strung together a few hits after 2 key walks and scored twice in the
bottom of the 8th. Now up 8-6 it was up to #23 Steve Molof to shut the
door and send the Topes to the Semi-Finals.
The Blazers gave it there
all getting runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, but they lacked the
clutch hits they desperately needed.
With
that said hats off to the Blazers they played a hell of a game to go
with the great season they had. The Topes now play in the Semi-Finals
were they will face the Beavers who they have beaten the last two years
in the Championship Series. Only this time it will be for right to play
in the Championship Series. Come on out this weekend and cheer on the
Topes.
Game 1 Sat 9-1910am Flood
Game 2 Sat 9-19 2pm Flood
Game 3 Sun 9-20 10am Marchbank (if needed)
Season Finale ends before it begins!!
You would have thought with the Topes beating the Beavers in the Finals the past two seasons they would be chomping at the bit to play the Topes on the season finale. Instead they lie dead one thier backs with only 7 Beavers who showed up, so they had to forfeit. With that win the Topes finish the season at 18-2 , and win the Bay East Divison earning them a first round bye.
Topes Win much anticipated rematch with All Blacks
The Topes have been waiting for this rematch since the middle of May when the All Black snapped the Topes 34 game regular season winning streak. There was not to many highlights in this game even though is was a close game. #7 Danny Harris pitched a good game , but lacked some of the clutch defense he is used too.
#27 Eric Vargas and #25 Nikolas Tanaka each had 2 hits and a RBI. The turning point in the game came in the 8th inning when the
All Blacks had the tying run at second with 1 out and a perfect relay 7-5-2 cut down the run, and later in the inning the same situation came up and #21 Joey Stoval made a MLB game saving web gem in no mans land behind second base. This got the Topes out of the inning. The Topes then scored 2 insurance runs in the 9th and #27 Eric Vargas shut the door earning his first save. Topes Win 7-4
Next Week the Topes close out the season against the Beavers who they have meet in the Championship Series the last 2 years.
Come on out Sat Aug 30th 10am Flood
Topes beat Rival Benders 10-4
After scoring 3 in the first the Topes never looked back. Starting pitcher #23 Steve Molof was dominate and shut down the Benders hitters. Molof pitched 8 shutout innings before Giving up 4 charity runs in the 9th. By that time it was to late for the Benders.
The Topes offense was lead once again by #25 Nikolas Tanaka. Tanaka was 3-4 with 3 RBI's, and was a Homer away from the cycle. #14 Ritchie Reiser also collected himself 3 hits and a RBI.
The Topes next game is Sat Aug 22 2pm @ flood vs All Blacks. The All Blacks Gave the Topes their first loss back in May. Come out and see the much anticipated rematch.
Storm blows through amd wipes out Topes 10 game win streak
This was the game both teams have been waiting for all season. Unfortunately the Topes were on the wrong side of a 9-7 game. Both teams aces struggled at times and look very dominate at times. This game came down to some clutch two out hits and some poor defense. One bright side for the Topes was the Hitting of #25 Nikolas Tanaka. Tanaka was 4-5 with 2 2B 2RBI. The only other Tope with Multiple hits was #34 Dan Meewis who was 2-3.
Isotopes next game is Sun Aug 16th Vs the Topes biggest rival the Benders @ Encinal High School
Topes win rematch with Blazers 5-1
Topes manager and number 4 starter #34 Dan Meewis pitched 7 shutout innings to help beat the Blazers the second time around.
Donny Blake had 2 hits to help with the Win.
Topes win with Red Giants forfeit
It was a close game 3-2 Topes leading in the 5th, when the Red Giants Catcher and manager was ejected for talk crap to the umpire. The Giants only had nine guys and the ejection caused the to forfeit. Sucks for them
Topes battle through shades of Gray and win 5-4
Topes get a 2 run jack from Cliff Berry, and a strong pitching performance from Joey Stoval & Steve Molof to help beat the Grays 5-4.
Giants Play with 8, Topes win 11-1
Well there is a reason you play with nine guys. Even with the Giants pitcher #5 Jason Francis Striking out 12 Topes. The Topes still scored 11 runs. Every Starter had atleast 1 hit. #27 Eric Vargas and #45 Miles Kinshinoka each had 2 hits.
#23 Steve Molof Had a solid outting on the bump 7IP 1R 1ER 5H 7K 0BB. (It helps getting free a out everytime the 9th hole comes up)
Topes win first meeting with the East Bay Giants 14-4
After spotting the Giants 3 runs in the 1st. The Topes chipped away, and the took the lead on Jono Stoval's 3 run jack in the 4th. After that the Topes didn't look back, and won in the bottom of the 8th with a walk off mercy rule hit by Matt Chasse in his final game as a Isotope. With this win the Topes take a 2 game lead over the Giants in the Bay East..
Mad Dogs started off rabid, but were Vaccinated by The Topes 7 run 6th.
The Topes started off with 3 in the first thanks to Cliff Berry's 2 rbi single. After that the Topes got a HR from proabaly the smallest guy in the league Ritchie Reiser. After the fifth inning and hitting 2 HR's the Mad Dogs had Clawed thier way back in the game only being down 7-6.
In the 6th the Topes took the game over scoring 7 times in the frame. There was no more scoring after that. Topes win 14-6.
Congrats to Steve Molof for getting a win in his first Carrer start for the Topes.
Topes sweep Titans
This weekends double header was huge for both teams. Both were tied at the top of the division at 5-1.The Titans scored in top of the first and that would be all they would get. Danny Harris must have used extra vagasil because his off speed was unhitable after the first inning. The Topes offense started of slow, but rally late and won big in game one 11-1
Game 1 highlights
Danny Harris- W, CG, 1ER, 8H, 12K, 3BB
Donny Blake- 4-5 2 3B, 4RBI
Cliff Berry 3-6, 2B, 3R, 2RBI
Game 2 was a little closer, But Joey Stoval shut down the Titan offense. Topes win 5-3, and take control of first place in the division
Game 2 highlights
Joey Stoval- W,CG, 3ER 7H,11K,3BB
2-4, 2RBI
Jono Stoval- 2-2 ,3R, 2B, BB,HBP, 2SB
Cliff Berry- 2-4 R, RBI
10 run second helps Topes blaze through Blazers
Topes score 10 in the second with every starter getting a hit and scoring a run in the frame. With that said Topes win 16-9
Where are all the Heroes?
The second time around against the Heroes was alot like the first. Except we only played 7 innings, and #34 Dan Meewis was on the mound. He only gave up 1 run on 5 hits. The Topes scored 4 in the first, and that's all #34 needed in the 11-1 Hero killing.
Other noteable Topes:
Jono Stoval - 2-3 2R HR 4RBI's
Cliff Berry- 2-3 2R 2B 2RBI's
Ritchie Resier- 3-4 2R SB RBI
Topes lose for the first time in 34 regular season games
Topes have seen better days. 3 weeks off, 6 errors, 95 degree heat, and the All Blacks Ace Howie threw a complete game gem.
Topes Lose 5-4
Nuff Said!!!!
Topes take Baysox to the Cleaners Starting Pitcher Matt Chasse went 5 innings allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits. Danny Harris followed throwing 3 shutout innings allowing only 2 hits before Joey Stoval closed it out in the 9th.
It was a tight game until the 5th inning when Cliff Berry broke it open with a two out 2 RBI triple.
Topes never did look back scoring 3 more in the 8th RBIs by Geoff Sandin and Matt Chasse, then 1 more run in the 9th scoring Richie Rieser off the bat of Cliff Berry.
Noteables:
Geoff Sandin: 3 for 4 with two RBIs Cliff Berry: 1b, 2b, 3b, (HR short of the cycle) and 3 RBIs.
Topes take care of Rebels
Topes beat Rebels 13-8 and move to 5-0
Heroes were hard to find today for the Heroes!!! April 11, 2009
There was plenty of heroes in the game today, but they were all on the Topes.
Topes win easily 14-5 and move to 3-0
Isotopes welcome Blacksox to SFNABA
The Black Sox should have stayed in the other league they were in.
Isotopes welcomed them into the SFNABA with a 15-2 pounding in 7 innings.
Fog Burned off by Topes March 28, 2009 - 09:00 PM
What a way to start off the season in typical Topes fashion! Down to the last 3 outs, Topes come back to win 3-2.
Joey Stoval pitched a magnificent 9 innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits. Stoval also K'ed 8.
Fog pitcher Nick Deming pitched a strong 7 innings. His perfect game was broken up by who else but Joey Stoval with a hit in the 5th inning.
Isotopes drew first blood in the 7th inning when Jono Stoval advanced 1st to 3rd on a botched pick-off attempt. Then from 3rd to home when the catcher threw a seed into left field on another pick-off attempt.
Fog battled back in the 8th and scored two off a blooper to centerfield.
Fog reliever made quick work of the Topes in the bottom of the 8th and Stoval returned the favor to the Fog in the top of the 9th.
Now in the bottom of the 9th Matt Chasse stepped to the plate and fisted a ball through the middle of the diamond. Dan Meewis then sacrifice bunted a perfect ball which the catcher picked up and threw to second drawing the shortstop off the bag and Chasse was safe. Cliff Berry got drilled in the back by the first pitch he saw and that loaded the bases. Richie Reiser came up and hit a grounder which the infielder went to second with. Cliff slid into second which "looked like he was jumping into a pool" and he was safe. Chasse scored tying the score at 2-2. Girodani Rivas stepped in and ended the game with a walk-off umm... walk.
Excellent, exciting game to start off the year. I look forward to more of these to come.
Isotopes need you!! January 27, 2009 - 09:41 PM

Topes squeak by Dirtbags, 3 - 2:Chasse goes the distance September 8, 2008
Some might suggest after the season we had that this 1st game was more of a formality than anything. Go out there, beat them up and play someone better. Well, that was not the case at all yesterday. We never take our opponents lightly, but we definitely didn't expect it to come down to the wire like it did.
Surprisingly #11 of the Dirtbags was dealing and we were wheeling for a rally that never came. The hits were scarce and the runs were few, as three were all we could muster for the day. Pathetic. Not nearly enough in a playoff game. Hats off to #11, he pitched one hell of a game.
But the DB's couldn't get much going either as they hit into five rally killing double plays. For them it was their kiss of death. Eliminate a few of those and we may have been the ones making plans next weekend at the beach drinking Mojitos.
With the Topes up 3 - 2 going into the top of the ninth with one out the DB's cleanup hitter laced a ball to right and stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and was the tying run.
I said to myself "is this really happening?" What's next, Tom Brady is out for the season?!?
What really didn't help was that three of our four main pitchers weren't available. Two had family reasons and the other had a very common September Flu bug. Fatal in most impoverished countries.
Matt Chasse (pronounced shaw-say, it's french canadian) - our lone pitcher - was well over the 100 pitch count. He knew before the game began he was the starter, middle reliever and closer all in one. (or just any other pitcher prior to the 1980's)
Chasse remained cool as he got the second out and had only one more to go.
The final out came with three cock shot fastballs. The last two were stared at without a swing.
WHEEW!!! We avoided the upset and my dog avoided a beating with my favorite - the leather belt. Okay, just kidding about the dog.
We advance to the Ocean Championship to face yet another tough team in the Storm. Don't worry Lex, I'll help you build those fences after the series.
Consider it charity work like Jimmy Carter does in the bible belt.
Harris dominates Storm in game 3, Topes aiming for 4th title. September 14, 2008
Game 1 - Topes 7 Storm 4
Game 2 - Storm 2 Topes 1
Game 3 - Topes 5 Storm 1
If you asked me earlier this season who would have been the one team trying to stop us from returning to the finals I would have said the Storm. Well I was right. Fortunately for us we got to the Ocean finals to see if it was true. So you could say it was the "Perfect Storm." Once you get to this point of the season sweeping teams aren't as easy anymore. We knew this was going to be extremely tough and it was.
The Storm made more than worthy opponents and showed us that nobody at this point is going to lay down against us - surely not next weekend either.
Game one we exchanged blows back and forth as the lead swapped several times. Joey Stoval started game one and Jay Bortoli finished it for him as the two helped us hold on for a 7 - 4 win. Clutch hitting and strong defense made the difference.
Game two was a pitching matchup between each teams aces. Coincidently both of them were lefties and both deserved the win. As it turned out we lost, for the first time in a year - 2 - 1. The Storms J- Hawk did us in again. We faced him years ago when he was on the Grays and he did the same thing. Lets limit these match-ups with you shall we. Our man - Matt Chasse did all he could as he also pitched a CG. Only allowing two runs, one earned.
Game three - Sunday. Man did we not want to play Sunday. I haven't seen a football game yet and I'm starting to get violent. But it is what it is and we had to win, and I knew we were. We had our ace in the hole. Danny Harris. This guy is easily a #1 on most teams rotations. Fortunately for us he Harris doesn't care when we use him, he just wants to win. Harris pitched nine solid innings allowing one earned run scattering 8 hits and 7 strikeouts, two in the ninth - looking. Dominant! We got the hits when we needed them and the defense played stellar.
Hats off to Lex and his team. Your guys made the series what it's suppose to be, fun and competitive. We will see you next season for sure.
So we return to the championship game and it's a rematch to boot. The Beavers are back and they're a lot better than last year. This one isn't going to be easy. I just hope I get to watch football next Sunday with another title under our belts. We will see...
Games Saturday, Sept 20th - TBA.
Topes win again;beat Benders 15 - 2 in eight August 19, 2008We decided that the Benders enjoyed Matt Chasse so much the first time that we would offer them another sampling of his delicious cheese - please bring your own wine. This one went pretty much like the first meeting - which oddly enough was just a few weeks ago. We really need to spread out these rivalry match ups a little more don't you think?
Either way #15 Chasse did his thing again versus the Benders limiting them to just 4 hits over seven innings pitched - striking out 2 and walking 2 as well. Chasse raised his season record to 6 - 0 and dropped his microscopic ERA to 1.21. Great job man and keep that un-groomed Chinchilla under your cap growing....it's giving you magical powers.
Joey Stoval pitched a scoreless 7th and Dan the Man Meewis finally got to pitch this season throwing a scoreless eighth.
Dan has pitched 10 total innings dating back to last year for the Topes and has yet to allow a single run. I know, if you're reading this and you're on another team you must hate us even more...SWEET!
Offensively it was offensive, but not for us. We banged out 19 hits and scored 15 runs. So many guys went off but I'll mention just a few.
Drum roll please.......
#3 Dr. Scholls, Jeff Gregori the foot doctor. 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 runs and a rbi. The hardest working Isotope bar none.
#18 Clay Alarcon and our newest cleanup hitter. Clay has the hottest bat on the team and will remain 4th until someone proves their bat is hotter. Which based on scientific analysis isn't humanly possible. If you could take a chunk from the sun and dip it in lava and spray it with Satan's ball sweat and put it next to Clays bat it would freeze immediately.
That's how hot Clay's bat is. Single, double, triple, 2 runs, 2 rbi's and a stolen bag.
Lastly G spot, G money, G unit or Omar Vizquels body double - # 4 Giordani Rivas. 3 hits, 3 rbi's, 2 stolen bags, and he batted 10th! We need to shave this lineup down for the playoffs and you my friend are not one of the fatalities. Keep it up.
The Topes are entering the final week of the regular season and will play the Fog at Flood park at 10:00 am this Saturday the 23rd.
20 - 0?????? Who cares, this is amateur baseball. Get over yourself.
20 - 0, now 0 - 0, the REAL season now begins... August 24, 2008
Somewhere in a third world country near you (well hopefully not) there are hundreds if not thousands of children wearing New England Patriot t-shirts that say " 20 - 0." Well at least for now the Topes don't have to worry about that. Of course we don't have that many fans nor the money or the arrogance to do such a thing.
But what we do have is a very special team and a very memorable regular season that nobody can take from us, ever.
One day I will be an old man, like all of you reading this - and if you're a woman, then hopefully you won't become an old man but you may end up looking like one. You should see some of my elder female relatives in Tahiti - creepy...
Anyways, I will probably be in a wheel chair in a care home just reading how my house foreclosed thanks to my children fighting over the property because Dad's almost dead and some Lawyer named Chris Hales ended up with most of the money.
Immediately after reading that encouraging news - a nurse, who isn't hot and who looks like a cross between ALF and E.T. will come into change my soiled diaper (3rd one of the day) and tell me, "Mr. Ribera, by the way, your rash isn't getting any better".
As a certainty of that day coming, all I can say is I still can reflect and remember the season we had in 2008 and the day we finished the regular season 20 - 0. And that my friends is why we play the game.
Beautiful, isn't it...
If you wanted to read about the game then you should have came. Words cannot describe how great that comeback was. All I can say is we were losing 3 - 1 in the bottom of the ninth and we won 4 - 3.
We won our first game this year in the bottom of the ninth and we won this last game the same way.
Hats off to the Fog and their saxophone player for such a great effort. If we are lucky enough to get to the finals I really hope you will be there waiting for us. You are a class act and a pleasure to play.
Our next game is Sunday, September 7th. The time hasn't been announced but whenever it is we will be ready.
Will you?
Topes beat Grays 16 different ways, win 9 - 5 August 10, 2008
In our first Thurrsday night game the Topes decided that everyone must be a part of this memorable event.
So with nothing to gain we batted all 16 players to start the game with no ambition other than to have fun, and fun we had. All though it took seven innings to get there it did eventually happen.
For the second consecutive week the Topes faced another tough opponent and another tough pitcher. In the end it was also the same outcome, a win. We pulled one out of our arse and remained speechless about how we keep doing it.
Down 4 - 0 in the bottom of the seventh which was also our largest deficit all season we started a rally for the history books.
Seven is a lucky number but thirteen must be too. It was the seventh inning and we started the inning with the 13 hitter. When it was all said and done thirteen hitters came up - almost making it all the way through the 16 man line up.
Nine runs scored and that was that. Topes shut it down from there, lights and all.
The game ran late and the lights went out in the middle of the first pitch in the top of the eigth inning, so that was that.
There was some minor drama as well but none of it impacted the outcome.
Bottom line is when a 16 man line puts up nine runs in one inning, there really is no reasoning.
We look forward to our rematch with the Benders this week - now at our home field. Come catch the game this weekend on Sunday, Aug. 17th at 10:00 am, Flood Park.
Topes Clinch Division 2nd year straight, earn 100th victory & beat Benders 11 - 1 July 28, 2008
Where do I start with this one....ummmm......let's see.....Playoffs baby!!!! This one was more than just a win for us. It was our 100th team win, 20th straight win, best start in league history at 16 - 0, previously held by the 2005 Benders at 15 - 0 and it was the division clincher over our rivals with the second best league record, the Benders.
As we prepared for our most important game thus far, none of us were quite prepared for what we saw Sunday at the Benders home field in Alameda. Aiming to clinch the top seed in the playoffs, a true hitting clinic was displayed by the Topes bats as 17 hits were banged out in six innings of offense. The boys were determined and driven as nine singles, six doubles, one triple and two home runs were produced. Five different Isotope batters had a multi-hit game and every batter had at least one hit. WOW!!!! We've never slaughter ruled the Benders before and I'm certain when we face them in a few weeks they will make sure it doesn't happen again.
Equally as good on the flip side, 2008 All Star starting pitcher Matt Chasse dominated the Bender batters for seven superb innings. Once the strike zone was established, which was between the batter's toe nails and the bill of their helmets, everything was smooth sailing.
Chasse allowed only four hits, no walks, and one unearned run while striking out four. Beautiful man, just beautiful. Chasse started the year as the # 4 pitcher in our rotation but I'm starting to recognize that is no longer the case. Your weekly bullpens throughout the entire off season have truly paid off. You owe Doc some beers for sure. Keep it up kid!
Offensive highlights were performed by All Stars Geoff Sandin and 2008 Home Run Derby champ Jono Stoval as each hit bombs over the right center field fence. Sandin's Jimmy Jack was an oppo shot that just cleared as Dion Jolley could only watch the pearly white ball sail over his head as he ran out of real estate thanks to that ever annoying fence. Stoval, who literally just arrived at the game already in progress into the fifth inning, was plugged into the bottom of the lineup immediately. On the second pitch Stoval's blast was a no brainer that went way out of the park. So Jono, you think your cool now huh? Showing up late and hitting jacks....well you are. You are cool as Ice, Vanilla Ice.
Let us not forget our 1 - 2 hitters Nikolas Tanaka and Chris Hales who both hit Home Run worthy balls that were all for not as they hit the top of the right field safety net that would have cleared most fences with ease. Either way they continually set the stage for us - the two of them went 5 - 7 with three doubles, one triple and four runs scored. You just got to love those power hitting lefties and neither of their names are Jono Stoval....scary!!
So I'm not sure who we are playing this week and we don't care. As far as I'm concerned we got four exhibition games now that mean nothing to us other than to stay sharp and look ahead to the playoffs and defend our title. Even though we are 16 - 0, going undefeated means nothing either. 16 - 0 is the best start of any team ever in this league and that's good enough for us.
Lastly, and the coolest part for me is the win was our team's 100th win in just under six seasons. I'm certain we are the first team to reach the 100 win plateau in the SFNABA. Overall the Topes are 100 - 32 - 2 which is a .746 winning percentage. Not too bad.
Topes edge Dogs 3 - 2, Dan Harris improves to 5 - 0 August 3, 2008
First off I like to say hats off to the Mad Dogs pitcher #4 Moslin for holding us to our lowest run total in a while, 3. Great game, but like Matt Cain and those inept Giants you got no run support.
The Topes starter Danny Harris also received very little support but it was enough as the Topes narrowly escaped winning 3 -2.
Danny Harris raised his record to 5 - 0 while striking out eight in eight innings pitched. F#*king sweet brah....
As little offense there was, we do have a few offensive notables...
# 44 Geoff Sandin - 4 for 4, all singles, all good. Also stole third to look extra cool late in the game. You get the Vanilla Ice award for that. Please collect from Jono next time you see him doing push ups with his shirt off.
Let us not forget our two new Topes # 4 Giordani Rivas and # 21 Louis Agront. These two guys play spectacular defense and have the best attitudes, as all of our guys do...usually. Big Lou had a 12 pitch at bat in the second that resulted in a base hit up the middle and scored Rivas to tie the game at 1- 1. Louis finished the day 3 - 3 with all three rbi's. Easily his best game as an Isotope, thank you Sea Lions.
Just as important was G - spot who swiped three bags like he stole something and scored two of our three only runs. Giordani also reached base all three times walking twice and a HBP. Legs of a Cheetah and eyes of a Eagle. Not sure what that would be but I'm sure Napoleon Dynamite knows.
The Topes looks to play their first weekday night game this Thursday at Washington park at 7:30 pm against the Grays. So bring your cold packs and peanuts as it going to be a great game.
Jono Stoval wins All Star HR Derby July 20, 2008
Isotopes leadoff hitter # 57 Jono Stoval wins the SFNABA's first inaugural Home Run Derby. Stoval hit out 3 in the final round to seal the win. Out of 25 players Stoval was arguably the smallest guy of all but did take advantage of the short porch in right at 305 ft. Stoval went home with $125 prize and immediately spent it on a 6 month supply of Ripped Fuel and syringes.
Hats off to all the Isotopes who competed in the Home Run Derby and All Star game festivities.
# 15 Matt Chasse - 1st All Star Selection and All Star SP
# 14 Joey Stoval - 2nd All Star Selection
# 35 Donny Blake - Home Run Derby and All time team HR leader
# 44 Geoff Sandin - 5th All Star Selection
# 22 Matahi Ribera - 3rd All Star Selection, Ocean Manager
# 57 Jono Stoval - 2nd All Star Selection and top vote recipient
Dogs beaten like red headed step child,18 - 4; .Michael Vick deny's any connection June 15, 2008
I've witnessed about 160 games in this league so far, most of them as an Isotope. Most of you probably don't know but I actually played for the Giants in 2001 who won the SFNABA leagues first title. So to sound like an asshole, which I rarely get to do, I've been on 4 championship teams. Either way the bats we swung today made me wonder if my team started juicing? 18 runs in seven innings? Huh? So I decided to check Jono Stoval's eyeballs and decided that he probably wasn't the best candidate for a random performance enhancing drug test. So I checked Dan Meewis after he unfortunately struck out and decided that wasn't a good idea either. So I dropped the plan all together and decided to play stoopid like Peter McGowan did for the last decade.
Seriously though when you take on a opponent that makes the playoffs every year and beat them into submission the way we did it makes the beer taste pretty damn good after the game. Just ask Clay and Danny at the Dutch Goose. I saw full pints in their hands at all times with smiles from ear to ear...and right there my friends is what this is all about too. It's not about that bases loaded bomb that Geoff hit to deep right or that base runner that Doc threw out at third. It's about enjoying a sunny afternoon with your teammates, some new some old, during the game and after. Truth be told, we actually all went down to the Dutch Goose to wish Mike Rose our # 3 hitter a nice goodbye as this was to be Mike's last game with the Isotopes.
Mike flaked on us and went home instead. I'm not surprised. It's all right Mike, thanks for the last two seasons with us. We wish you the best with your new Dental practice in Las Vegas. Mike only played in 27 games with the Topes dating back to last year. He was 25 - 1 - 1 with us. Sorry about that tie and the loss Mike. I'm guessing that's why you didn't join us at the Goose for road sodas....
Opps..I forgot to hand out game balls so I'm going to offer them now.
Game ball #1 goes to # 14 Joey Stoval, starting pitcher.
This was probably one of Joey's less than memorable games as he allowed two runs earned, 6 BB's, 2 HBP, and only two K's. Bottom line he got the WIN! 18 runs of support doesn't hurt either.
Gamer # 2 goes to # 44 Geoff Sandin, DH, Clean up hitter and a cleaning he did. 4 for 4. 2 singles, 2B, 3B, 4 rbi's, 2 runs.
I said BAM!!!! Geoff requested the headline for this weeks game summary would be the phrase, "WHOA!" I couldn't make it symbolic enough to go with an image so just for you....
"WHOA!"
Lastly game ball # 3... never a quitter, the two hitter, Chris Shitter. Okay, his last name isn't Shitter. It's # 1 Chris Hales. You did enjoy that briefly though didn't you?!? Shit, I did. Anyway the man with the Moon Tan had a 1B, 2B, 2 runs, and four rbi's.
Again great job to the entire team. We've raised our record to a decent 11 - 0 and our winning steak to 15 consecutive games. Rumor has it we are playing the Dirtbags next week at my favorite field to do donuts in center field, Hayward High on Sunday @ 2:00 pm.
Topes beat Dirtbags 17 - 10
There are some games that you would rather forget forever and this was one of them. We allowed nine runs in the fourth inning. We have not allowed more than 8 runs in a game since 2005. Disgusting....
Game ball to Geoff Sandin and I should have mentioned Matt Chasse. I'll make it up to him next week.
Topes take on the Red Giants in a double dipper at Flood park this Sunday at 10 and 2 pm.
Topes sweep Red Giants - Improve to 14 - 0
Topes raised their record to 14 - 0 and also improved their winning streak to 18 consecutive games dating back to last year.
Game balls to...
# 15 Matt Chasse - CG, 1 ER, 8 K's (3W - 0L)
# 25 Nikolas Tanaka - 5 Hits total, 3 extra base hits, 4 RBI's
# 3 Jeff Gregori - 4 hits, 2 RBI's, 16 innings behind the dish
# 7 Danny Harris - 7 IP, 2 ER, 4 K's (4W - 0L)
# 1 Chris Hales - 5 Hits, 4 RBI's, 3 Runs, SB
Topes will take the next few weeks off to reflect and be spiritual.
Honorable mention to Clay's new Mustache, living proof that today's youth still watches porn.
Blake & Bortoli lead the way; Topes win 10 - 1 July 20, 2008
For most of us this was just another game. But for #35 Donny Blake this was his spring training and season opener all in one. Missing this entire season from a leg injury that kept him out since the championship game last year where he originally injured it, Donny was finally cleared to return this week. With only six games remaining it was perfect timing, as you need at least six regular season games to be playoff eligible. Traditionally Blake hit 3rd or 4th for the Topes but to ease him in we put him in the nine hole to be safe. Batting him ninth is like opening a christmas gift that is actually a bomb. At least for the unknowing pitcher.
With two men on and nobody out Blake came up in the second inning for his first at bat in nearly a year. On a 1 - 1 count he blasted an opposite field shot into the right field bleachers. It was a three run homer that cleared the fence with ease. As Jim Rome would say, " INCREDIBLE!" It was like a Rick Ankiel story minus the steroids. Glad to have you back, I'm sure the rest of the league isn't glad and that's just too bad for them.
They were other great efforts made too we cannot forget. Starting pitcher Jay Bortoli threw seven strong innings only allowing one run. Also for the first time ever he finally did not hit a batter. Nice job!
2008 All Star Joey Stoval closed the game with two scoreless innings as well.
The Topes pounded out 14 hits and 6 of them went for extra bases. We raised our record to 15 - 0 and and continued our winning streak at 19.
Unlike this week, next week is a little more than just another game. We face a strong Benders team who is on our heels for the division and would love nothing more than to bring us our first defeat while inching closer to first place. If we didn't beat them last year in the conference championship, which we barely won, they would have won it for sure. That was truly the title series for us.
This year looks no different either. In my opinion the three strongest teams are all in the same conference, just our luck...
So we look forward to another classic as we've had so many with the Benders and that's why there is no other team we enjoy playing more as we approach this game with a playoff like atmosphere. See you Sunday at 1:00 pm at Encinal.
Topes edge Rebels in 9th inning thriller, 7 - 6; Improve to 7 - 0 May 10, 2008
After this one the Topes should have been 6 -1, not 7 - 0. The Topes defense was terrible as two infield starters weren't available and it showed. Not to mention some very lucky hits by the Rebels, but none the less they were hits and we ended up winning the game on one as well. Down 2 - 6 entering the bottom of the 7th the Topes scored two runs and added two more in the 8th. Going into the bottom of the ninth with the game tied at six with one out the 10 hitter Rivas reached on BB. The Rebels pitcher attempted a pick off to first but threw the ball away instead advancing Rivas to second. Leadoff hitter Jono Stoval with the hot bat grounded out to short and failed to advance Rivas to third.
Now with two outs and batting second, younger brother Joey Stoval came up as the Topes final hope to avoid the ever annoying "tied ball game." Stoval already struck out in his last two previous at bats and looked to make it a third as he quickly whiffed at the first two pitches putting the count at 0 - 2. The Rebels pitcher grooved one more fastball as Stoval amazingly made contact as he hit a mile high pop up in shallow center. The second baseman, shortstop and center fielder for the Rebels all went for it. They all banged into each other with the ball hitting one of their gloves then falling to the ground. Rivas scored from second and the game was over. This was one of the ugliest game we've ever been involved in. Both teams at times looked like a beer league softball game would have been more their speed.
Hats off the the Rebels for a great game and their starting pitcher. We look forward to playing you again.
Gamers....
# 12 Jay Bortoli inherited the pitching duties in the fifth from starter Danny Harris. Jay only allowed one run while keeping the Topes within striking distance to win this one. Definitely this seasons Rolaids relief performer.
# 51 Nikolas Tanaka hit two BIG triples and scored both times as they were each crucial runs. Nobody hit as well as Tananka did against the former minor league pitcher for the Rebels. Great job Nick.
Special mention to our starting pitcher Danny Harris. Harris really pitched great today but had no defense and literally most of the hits he allowed were Texas leaguers and grounders with eyes. It was a collaboration of the kind of hits that break up no hitters.
The win raised the Topes season record to 7 - 0 and also ties the teams best start ever. The Topes started 7 - 0 in 2004 as well falling to the Tsunami the following week. The Topes were eventually were crowned the 2004 SFNABA champions that season.
Shooting for 8 - 0 the Topes will take on the Titans at San Mateo High School at 10 am May 17th. The Titans always play us tough as we look forward to another good game against them.
Say it ain't so, Topes are 8 - 0!!! May 18, 2008
I try to stay humble even when things are good. One reason for that is I bought a home when the market was good and now it is shit. You never know what's waiting for you around the corner and so with that you got to take it one day at a time or one game at a time for that matter. We are playing good ball and the team is giving everything they've got to keep us in the win column. All I can say is keep it up.
On the flip side and always keeping a close watch is the Benders. Our divisional neighbors haven't gone away and we still got two with them somewhere in our final nine games. Like I said though, one game at a time and I'll worry about them when the time comes.
With all the success we have been so fortunate to have had it amazes me how we keep having more. We've never been 8- 0 and we've won 12 straight games dating back to last year. Both new team records but neither mean diddily squat with out the hardware at the end of the year. Being undefeated is nice but it is a lot of pressure as the season wears on. Only two teams in SFNABA history have gone 8 - 0 or better. Neither won the championship. We never plan on losing of course but a loss here or there can be good medicine too. But by the look of things it seems though we aren't sick so maybe we don't need any medicine right now or at least yet.
Game balls...
# 12 Jay Bortoli. Only his second start Bortoli pitched a two hitter thru six striking out seven. Are F-ing kidding me? I don't know how he does it but he just does. Your the best Italian on the team that doesn't have 20 lbs of gold around his neck.
# 21 Louis Agront. Played a gold glove defense with about 6 putouts alone and made a highlight diving snag to rob a hit too. Keep it up Louis, we can't keep winning if we don't have a solid glove at third.
# 51 Nikolas Tanaka. Nikolas was the last guy we added to the team and he was supposed to be a role player. Well that didn't last very long. Nikolas has basically gone from the 9 hitter off the bench to the 3 hitter over night. Nikolas has not played since high school and he looks like he is ready for the college scouts. Four hits and too legit to quit, please Nikolas, don't hurt 'em.
The Topes with the rest of the league are taking a week off to relax and reflect or just get drunk instead. It's Memorial day weekend.
Look for us May 31st as we take on the 2007 SFNABA Bay Div. Champion Beavers.
Topes Trim the Beavers 8 - 6 in extra innings June 1, 2008
Down 5 - 4 in the ninth Jono Stoval smashes a Home Run to right to tie the game at five all. The Topes add three more runs in the 10th inning and win 8 - 6 over the Beavers. The victory was raised the Topes record to 9 - 0 and their 13 consecutive win dating back to last year. But maybe most the amazing stat was that it was their 10th consecutive win over the Beavers/Steelheads dating back to 2003. Historically the Beavers have been one of the leagues premier teams so that make it even more impressive. The Topes lost first two meetings against the Steelheads in 2003 and haven't lost since, ( 10 - 2 ) overall versus the Steelheads/Beavers. The name may have changed but the outcome remains the same.
Titans don't want to remember: Topes 8, Titans 1, Topes 10 - 0 June 7, 2008
Danny Harris earned his 3rd victory of the year by pitching six innings of 1 run ball as Matt Chasse came in to close out the final three. Chasse easily had his most dominant performance this season by striking out the first four batters he faced. Finished the game with five K's in three innings worked. Nice Job!
The Topes raised their record to 10 - 0 and the win was also their 14th consecutive win dating back to last year. Both are team records which seem to only last 1 week at a time. The Topes will face a tough Maddogs team this Saturday at Flood Park at 10 am. The last time these two faced off the Topes won 13 -3 in seven.
Danny Harris and Matt Chasse each received game balls.
Chasse Beach Slaps Tsunami, 13 - 1 April 27, 2008
The Topes raised their record to 5 - 0 Saturday winning with ease against the Tsunami, 13 - 1. Matt Chasse of Bostonian descent and super fan of the 18 -1Patriots made his first pitching start of the season as he dominated - allowing only four hits and striking out eight through a complete game in seven innings.
With that said, I wanted to mention that last season many said we rode on the back of one pitcher all the way to the title, like we were cheating or something. Well as good as he was, he isn't here anymore but 13 other guys are. One guy doesn't make you a champion and we are here to show we aren't a one-trick pony. Through five games we've started four different pitchers resulting in five wins. Cain, Lincecum and Sanchez are in vain...and not of our pitchers but that fact that they average 10 runs a game in run support to their 1.3 depending if Benji Molina is playing or not...keep throwing those shutouts guys, you'll need 'em!
Offensive notables....
# 44 Heffery Sandin - this cleanup hitter kept the bases squeaky clean as he smacked two triples, knocking in three
# 57 Jono Stoval - leadoffs are asked to get on any way possible and score runs. He did it, 3 runs, one single and two walks.
# 3 Jeff Gregori - the smartest and hardest working player on the team - our 50-year old catcher...okay, maybe 49. 2 hits, 2 runs and 3 rbis. Just another day at the office.
# 15 Matt Chasse - Starting pitcher for the day decided that pitching wasn't enough so he brought his bat with him too. 2 hits, run, rbi , sb. Wicked Haad kid!
# 34 Dan Meewis - clear the dugout if he whiffs, could become a hostile environment...but he rebounds nicely from his last game and adds a single, a double and two runs. Nice job, cute dog too.
Lastly... # 1 Chris Hales, attorney at law, humanitarian and environmentalist. Chris had his usual multi-hit game as he showed off his new pants. As a humanitarian Chris made sure that his new pants were Union made in the U.S. by fairly paid laborers and not by a third world sweat shop in Tahiti. Also as an environmentalists he spread his hits around the field, not beating up on the same section of Kentucky Bluegrass allowing every young virgin blade on the field an equal chance of survival. Bono of U2 is shedding a tear as we speak...
Topes beat Blazers 7 - 2 May 5, 2008
It was another bone chilling Spring afternoon at Westmoor Field as the Topes and Blazers prepared to square off for the first time since their last meeting in the 2007 playoffs where the Topes were victorious 8 - 2. It was also slow start for both teams as nobody seemed interested in getting on base until the fourth inning. Call it a slow start or not, the sh*t weather has everything to do with it. We are praying we never have to play there again. Like Hammer said in the early 90's as he tried to salvage what was left of his stock market like crashing career, we got to pray just to make it today. Undoubtedly the worst MTV video ever.
Opening day pitcher Joey Stoval made his second start of the season as he was rarely challenged by the Blazer bats, striking out 10 and only allowing 5 hits through 8 2/3. Yes, 1/3 short, how you ask? With two runners on and a 0 - 2 count with two outs in the ninth to the eight hitter (also one pitch from earning a complete game shutout) - a soft bleeder that hung up to left turned into a two rbi hit that caused Manager Ribera to go to the pen calling for Danny Harris to close it out. So with one pitch he did. Nice Job Danny, make sure to ice your arm.
The few offensive notables....jeez we only had five hits....
# 4 Giordani Rivas and Omar Vizquel body double had a nice offensive day with two stolen bases and a single with a walk. Great job G - Money.
The highlight of the game was easily # 44 Geoff Sandin stealing home. As the Blazer pitcher was in the middle of his five minute wind-up Sandin ran about fifty feet towards home, stopped to make sure the batter wasn't swinging and then dove into home plate from a standing position. It was like he was diving into a pool. Considering we were at Westmoor he probably was, unfortunately it was a pool of dog urine. Anything to get that run Geoff!!!
Topes weather the Storm, win 7 - 6 in bottom nine March 30, 2008
The Topes are 6 - 0 on opening day, but today it wasn't as easy to do as it has been in the past. I don't like to talk about the past though, you know..three championships, blah blah blah...BORING!! We started our 2008 season against the Storm, a new team to the league with familiar faces. They are a collaboration of some of the leagues best players from four different 2007 playoff teams. They are similar to Voltron if you will minus the 1980's Japanimation. Oh yeah, there is also one other difference, Voltron never lost. Don't get me wrong, the Storm is a damn good team who wont lose many games, but today we busted out the knee high Goulashes just for them and paddled our way out of shit creek. Personally I don't like creeks, I prefer Rivers, especially since I grew up in a van down by the river... Back to the action...with our starting SS and catcher out we had to turn to Geoff Sandin for the catching duties with new teamate Giordani Rivas up the middle. Geoff had not caught since he was in his teens when he had a Micheal J. Fox poster on his bedroom wall. Seriously though, hats off to you and Jay for helping us behind the dish and to Doc our regular catcher. The boys agreed your job is hard, especially considering you are in your late 50's or something. Joey Stoval started on the hill for the Topes and pitched his heart out but we gave him the Matt Cain treatment, no run support and a few errors not to mention a couple questionable calls (consider that a bonus)! Did I mention that Joey was not only our opening day starter but he is also the only guy on the team who works with his shirt off for a living. By day he is an awesome ball player for us, but by night he sprays cologne on unsuspecting women at Abercrombie and Fitch while showing off his freshly waxed pecks. It's an honest living Joey, don't be ashamed. Uncle Sam thanks you for it and don't forget his cut of 30%. So we fast forward to the bottom of the seventh down 2 - 6. We scored 3 runs to bring it within one off the Storms 2nd pitcher of the day who was in relief for Gamble the starter. So we entered the eighth down 5 - 6. Without making a peep in the eighth and relief pitcher Danny Harris for the Topes keeping the Storm hitters "under the weather" we entered the bottom of the ninth with an excellent opportunity to win the game. With the bags loaded with one out and Matt Chasse up Matt decided he wanted to take up the coaches offer on free milkshakes after the game if we won by ripping a double down the line to right to win it. Topes win 7 - 6. Hats off to all the Storm players, easily the best hitting lineup we've seen yet, and that includes the A's and Giants. We look forward to another great game later in the season.
Topes hibernate Grizzlies in 7; 11 - 0 April 5, 2008
With Danny Harris as a last minute scratch Joey Stoval took the rock once again as the Topes faced off for the second time ever against the Grizzlies, winning with ease, 11 - 0. New comer Nikolas Tanaka debuted for the Topes as he crushed two balls from the nine hole, one clearing the bags and giving the Topes an early 3 - 0 lead and never looking back. Catch the Topes next week as they take on the Brewers at Flood Park Saturday March 12 at 10:00 am.
Topes Tap the Brewers 13 - 0 in seven April 12, 2008
For a second consecutive game the Topes not only shutout another team, they did it in seven as well. New addition # 7 Danny Harris made his first career start on the bump for the Isotopes as he pitched seven beautiful shutout innings striking out eight and walking nobody. Welcome to the team Danny, we expect that every time now. Obviously with 13 runs the Topes were busy with the bats too. Howie Correia pitched for the Brewers and was very effective for the first four innings but his defense did him no service in the fifth which eventually led to many more at bats and hits then there should have been. Either way the Topes banged out 12 hits, all against Correia. Apparently the bullpen wasn't available for the Brewers. Howie again showed a good pitching effort but had no bullpen, no run support and in the end it all equaled a loss. You deserve better my friend.
Offensive notables: # 14 Joey Stoval hammered three hits and had four, count them - BIG RBI'S! Great job kid! Joey is also the only Isotopes player who cannot legally buy a beer. So you get a milkshake instead.
Older brother and LESS wiser # 57 Jono Stoval added three runs, 2 BB's 2 RBI's, and 1 SB. Nice job, hopefully that eye black washes off your face sometime this week.
Let us not forget out favorite attorney and enemy # 1 to the center of our solar system, the sun, # 1 Chris Hales. Chris continues to amaze us with his hitting skills as he added two more notches(which means hits for those of you who are slow) to his bed post...that's right, he swings a bed post. Chris is a huge fan of the Acer Palatium and will not support the slaughter of maples apparently.
Lastly, just because and the newest of the newly weds, # 12 Jay Bortoli. He was supposed to pitch in relief but SP Danny Harris apparently had other plans. So we got him in for a consolation at bat at the end of the game and what does he do you wonder??? That's right - he rakes it to right and knocks in a run! Unfortunately confirmed reports said that his new wife missed it all as she was knee deep in a subscription to US Weekly reading about Owen Wilson's and his new hair highlights. Don't worry, we saw it kid.
Catch the Topes next week as we take on the Bay Sox at Sunday at 10 am at Westmoor High.
Bortoli's comeback is a winner April 20, 2008
In 2005 Jay Bortoli was 6 - 0 for the Topes, but he suffered an arm injury and wasn't the same. Jay tried to return in 06 and 07 but his wing wasn't having it. Well I guess three times is a charm as he proved he still had something left in the tank when he faced off with the Bay Sox on Sunday. Bortoli pitched five strong innings whiffing seven batters and only allowing one run. Welcome back kid, easily the best comeback since Travolta in Pulp Fiction. The Topes led comfortably for most of the game, 5 - 0 in the fifth, but the Bay Sox made a late comeback just to fall short 6 - 4.
Mike Rose of the Topes added three hits as him and Bortoli received game ball honors for their superior play. The Topes improved to 4 - 0 and look to take on the Tsunami this Saturday at Westmoor High at 2 pm. If you haven't been there you are not missing anything. Save yourself the drive and just hang out in your Freezer for three hours. It will provide the same effect.
