Brandon Crosby, an eighth grader at Chickahominy Middle School, was voted Most Outstanding Player at the Metropolitan Junior Baseball League’s (MJBL) annual All-Star game in Law Vegas, NV February 18-21.
Brandon hit for the cycle (single, double, triple and home run), stole four bases and had five RBI. Brandon also made several spectacular defensive plays from his second base position.
Brandon’s father, who accompanied him to Las Vegas, said it was a great experience for the 13 year old.
“The MJBL really did a great job setting up the All-Star games. Brandon was able to compete against kids from all over and proved that Virginia is second to none in baseball.”
The MJBL also sponsors The Black League World Series. Last year’s event was held in Greensboro NC and this year’s event will be in Orlando, FL. Mr. William Forrester, President of the MJBL, says, “MJBL was formed to give African-American kids and intercity kids an opportunity to not only compete in baseball on a national level but also an opportunity to experience traveling and staying at first class hotels. Some kids never travel outside their environments or surroundings.”
Brandon says this was an experience he will never forget. He attributes his success to his faith in God, hard work and the support of his parents and siblings.
Brandon has aspirations to one day play Major League Baseball but he has a more immediate goal of playing for his middle school team at Chickahominy and judging by his recent performance in Las Vegas, he should be just fine.
"One of the beautiful things about baseball is that every once in a while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something."
"ABILITY IS WHAT YOU'RE CAPABLE OF. MOTIVATION DETERMINES WHAT YOU DO. ATTITUDE DETERMINES HOW WELL YOU DO IT."
EAST END EXPRESS BASEBALL MISSION
I BELIEVE FROM COACH ANTHONY GRIGSBY I BELIEVE.... I believe hitting a round ball with a round bat is the hardest thing to do in all of sports. I believe in the sacrifice fly. I believe that Astroturf should be outlawed. I believe that pitchers should buy catchers lunch. I believe batting practice makes perfect. I believe Lou Gehrig's birthday should be a national holiday. I believe Tony Gwynn sleeps with his bat. I believe the squeeze play should be taught in public schools. I believe that no one is bigger than the game. I believe somebody, somewhere, believes in the infield fly rule. I believe it's time to sing "Take me out to the ballgame." I believe domed stadiums are great ... for motocross. I believe that "Field of Dreams" and "Bull Durham" are two of the best movies ever made. And I believe the two greatest words in the English language are "Play Ball"!
