 Middle School Softball League Bylaws

All teams will follow the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHSA) rules for play with the following exceptions and additions:

  1. The head coach of the given middle school team will be selected by the head coach of the high school for which the team fields.

  2. The official start date for the league will be the Sunday of the last full week of February*. Teams may hold tryouts, and practices after this date. No formal practice or team activities may be scheduled prior to this date*. (*text changed 1/20/17 from March 1 start date). For the 2025 season tryouts and practices can begin on Saturday, February 15th.

  3. The third week of March will be the target start date for games. For the 2025 season, games will begin March 31st.

  4. Games and/or practices may be held on all seven days of the week.

  5. While there is no formal association between the team and the school for which the team is named, teams will be comprised of only girls in grades 5-8, who attend the middle school or are in the school district for which the team is named. Voted on via Zoom meeting for the 2021 and future seasons

  6. This league will not recognize a community based team, or a team which is comprised of players who attend different middle schools. A player will be associated with the middle school for which she attends as of January 1, of the year of play. In addition, players who attend a private school in which that private school does not have a team as well as any home schooled player, may play for the middle school team that is in their district. (change 1/29/18 private and home schooled player)

  7. Pitching distance will be 43 ft.

  8. No inning will begin after two hours from the start of the game. The inning in progress at the two hour mark will be played in its entirety.

  9. Every inning are unlimited runs. (change 3/8/19)

  10. The mercy rule of 10 runs after the 5th inning will be in effect.

  11. All high school substitution rules will be followed, with one exception. A courtesy runner may be used more than once per game. However, she may not run more than once per inning.

  12. The dropped third strike rule is in effect.

  13. There will be a maximum of 10 batters in the lineup, with 9 players in defensive positions.

  14. Teams are permitted unlimited defensive substitutions. However, the batting order cannot change. If a player is placed in the game and will bat for the person they are replacing then the umpire and the other team needs to be notified of the change. If a defensive substitution is being made and that person will not bat then no notification of the umpire/other team needs to be made. Any time you are replacing a batter with another batter then notifications must occur and the NFHS rules apply regarding re-entry. Once a player enters the batting order they cannot be removed from the game and re-entered into a different spot in the batting order.
