ANNOUNCEMENT: Valley Stream Youth Umpire’s No longer eligible to umpire January 25, 2010
Due to Little League National Rule Change and Our Compliance
Recently Little League baseball notified the local organizations in regard to the 2010 rule changes. One of the changes is an age requirement to be eligible to umpire Little League games. The rule states “A person who is not an adult may serve in a game as an umpire, including as plate umpire, provided one or more other adults are also umpires for that game. However, that non-adult umpire cannot be designated as umpire-in-chief for that game. The umpire-in-chief is not required to be the plate umpire.”
Basically this means that we no longer can provide two youth umpires on the field at the same time. This rule created a dilemma in how we conduct our umpire program. In order to have a professional adult and a youth umpire on the field we would need to raise fees. The board has decided that raising fees is not an option in today’s economy. We have worked very hard to keep fees the same for three years running. When a league applies for its annual charter with Little League, it pledges to abide by all the rules and regulations of Little League. It is with great dismay that we close down our umpire program. We considered having parents and coaches volunteer to be on the field but, this would require coverage of over 300 games at the Minors and Majors level and we just do not have the volunteers. The aforementioned facts lead us to hire an umpire organization to officiate our Minors and Majors games.
Our Umpire and Chief John LaBarbera writes,” we taught our children more that just umpiring, they learned valuable life lessons. They were taught how to deal with adversity, adult coaches and parents and did a great job with each and every situation. Plus they were all great people and better umpires. This new rule has forced Valley Stream Little League to hire an adult umpiring organization, thus the end of our youth umpiring program. This was done by Williamsport for legal and safety reasons. I have been Umpire-in-Chief for the past 7 years and I have taught more than 200 youth umpires over the years. I would like to thank the parents for intrusting your children to me to share my umpiring knowledge and life experience with each of them.”
In closing we are very disappointed with the rule change but we are mandated to close one of the best Youth Umpire programs on Long Island.

VSLL Baseball & Softball Ages 5-16,
Molding our youth to become good citizens!
On Tuesday nite, the VSLL Senior Boys (15-16) hosted the Los Delfines ball club from the Dominican Republic. It was a great match, with the score trading hands and our hometown boys claiming a 9-4 victory in the 1st Boys of Baseball International Classic. After the game, the teams shared a pizza dinner in the Firemen's Field-house.
Stay tuned for more details in next week's Valley Stream Hearld newspaper.
Thanks to Coach John Faust VSLL and Coach Esteban Saint LDDR for arranging this terrific cultural bonding event.

Message from President and CEO of Little League International
Dear Little League Volunteer:
You may have heard about the tragic accident last night during a weather-related delay in a Spotsylvania County (Va.) Little League game. One child died as a result of a lightning strike, and another was injured.
We at Little League International extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Little Leaguer Chelal Matos. Our thoughts and prayers also are with the child who was injured, and with his family.
As you know, Little League International has provided extensive information to its member leagues on lightning safety, in conjunction with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. We are taking this opportunity to remind all parents and volunteers to review the information linked below.
