Champions are Crowned
The 2017 Washington Church League Championship Finals are complete, and for the fourth consecutive year, BenchMark has won the Washington Church League Championship.
Games 1 and 2 of the Finals were played on Monday, August 14. BenchMark won Game 1, 7-5, after jumping out early to a 6-1 lead after two innings and holding on while Jefferson Avenue Methodist chipped away. However, BenchMark's defense held JAM scoreless through the last three innings to preserve the victory. In Game 2, BenchMark's bats came out early again, scoring five runs in the first inning, and the defense held again with a number of stellar plays en route to an 11-1 victory.
Two days later in Game 3, BenchMark jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one inning and scored four more in the third, then three in the top of the fourth to take a 10-2 lead. A few miscues in the bottom half of the fourth inning and some timely JAM hitting started a comeback, making the score 10-6 after four. JAM added one more run in their half of the fifth to close the gap to 10-7, but that's as close as they'd come. BenchMark held on to win the deciding Game 3 by that score.
Congratulations to BenchMark on their fourth straight championship and fifth in seven years. Congrats also go out to JAM, who made their third Final appearance in the last four years.
It was another great, albeit wet season in 2017. Thank you to everyone involved in making the 2017 Washington Church League season another successful one!
See you all in 2018!
