Joe Cassidy Earns Coach-of-the-Year Honors
June 3, 2009 Joe Cassidy, in only his second year at the helm of the Walt Whitman Vikings, was named coach of the year by the Gazette. Cassidy guided the team to a 14-4 record at its first trip in history to the regional finals of the state baseball tournament. Ethan Thompson (P-2B), who led the team in hitting, and Michael Flack (P-Util.), who hit .444 as a freshman, were named to the second team by the Gazette. Catcher Danny Lee, who led the team in RBIs, received honorable mention. Click here to see the selections.

Whitman Alumni Return for Black 'n Blue Game
June 1, 2009 -- More than 20 Whitman baseball alumni, including some high school record-holders, took the field on Sunday evening in the first annual Black 'n Blue Game. The Blue beat The Black, 5-2, in a contest characterized by the classic Whitman success formula--strong pitching coupled with the long ball. No one was hurt.

After a short barbeque, honorary coaches Tony Korson and Dan Wolff picked sides. Though he rarely pitched during his high school career, Wolff called on himself to open the game on the mound and quickly fell behind 2-0 as The Black piled up a bunch of cheap hits.

The Blue defense aquitted itself admirably. On one play, center fielder Dan DeMarco, who played for three years at Washington College, retreated to the fence to grab the ball. He threw it to Washington University's Michael Lee, who pegged to third to catch a runner trying to take an extra base. The runner may have been safe, but after the tremendous defensive effort, there was no doubt in umpire Steve Feldman's mind; he called the runner out.

The Blue managed to tie the game in the second on the "strength" of a home run by Josh Feldman, a four-year starter at St. Mary's. The towering fly ball easily cleared the fence in left field. Feldman forshadowed the HR with a memorable foul ball down the left-field line that may have rolled out onto River Road.

How The Blue scored its second run to tie the game is anyone's guess. Case Western's Simon Weaver rounded third after a bloop hit down the first-base line and scored while the catcher, who had the ball, was otherwise locked in a wrestling match with the on-deck hitter.

Boston College's Ian Fitzgerald made a cameo appearance, dropping in to pitch the second inning in boat shoes and a golf shirt. He was very effective until The Black's Tony Korson, who holds the high school's single-season home run record, deposited a high fastball over the 360-sign in center field to make it 3-2.

Neither side wanted to supply a catcher. Colgate's Chris Thompson, who played left field in high school, donned the tools of ignorance for the blue squad. Michael Penansky (Tulane) and Brian Gobish (Tampa) split the duties for the black squad. Truth be told, none of the catchers distinguished themselves.

Jason Weingardt provided one of the most memorable plays of the game. Three times he failed to pick up a grounder at short. The fourth time, though, was a charm. Incredibly, his peg to first to nailed Gobish. To his credit, Gobish had singled solidly in his previous at-bat.

The Black seemed to have an unfair advantage on the mound. Marty Hauck, who pitches for Juniata College, started the game, throwing some nasty sinkers. He was followed by Ben Lowry, who is reportedly 6-0 for the club team at Maryland. Lowry, who pitched a no-hitter for Whitman, stymied the blue team with a 12-6 breaking ball and a sneaky fastball.

It was almost unfair when Florida Gulf Coast's Tony Korson, who holds several Whitman pitching and hitting records, came on to pitch in the fifth inning. Korson mowed down the hitters with a fastball in the mid-80s. Left-handed hitters flailed at his curve.

True to form, Dan Hendricks arrived fashionably late to the game and quickly made his presence known at second base, ribbing every hitter and punctuating his remarks with occasional street slang. He came on to pitch the final inning, exhibiting nearly over-powering stuff. He struck out Coach Joe Cassidy to end the game.

Whitman Falls to QO in Quarterfinals
May 15, 2009 One of the greatest seasons in Walt Whitman history came to a close on Friday as the Vikings lost to Quince Orchard 7-2 in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, the farthest any Viking team had advanced.

The disappointing loss in the 4A West Regional final, before a huge crowd at QO, snapped a seven-game Viking winning streak. After an opening round bye, Walt Whitman (14-4) had defeated Walter Johnson and Northwest to reach the elite eight.

The game pitted QO's Mike Ryan (8-1, 0.4 ERA) against Whitman's Ethan Thompson (4-4, 2.27 ERA). The pair had locked horns in a 10-inning duel earlier in the year. Both pitchers had gone seven innings on Monday.

The Cougars jumped on top early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Quince Orchard added four more runs in the second inning after two were out. The Vikings had an opportunity to get out of the inning without allowing a run but couldn't make a play. That was pretty much the way the game went early on, with Quince Orchard turning in several spectacular clutch plays and Whitman making a few critical mistakes.

Even so, the Vikings looked like they might make it a game in the fifth inning, when they struck for two runs and might have had more. With one out sophomore James Dionne dropped a single in front of the center-fielder for his second hit of the game. Lead-off hitter Jesse Mates (.385) followed with a line-drive single to left field and altertly took second on a throw to third that didn't get Dionne. Max Hilbert followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score the first Whitman run. Thompson brought home the second with a line drive to left-center.

Thompson took the loss for Whitman to square his record at 4-4. Michael Flack, who had the third highest on base percentage this year in Whitman history, .603, as a freshman, pitched the last three innings for the Vikings, allowing only one run. Thompson led the hitting attack with three hits, which left him with a .475 batting average, also the third hightest in Whitman history. The Vikings managed 11 hits against Ryan, including two each by Chris Kelly (.360), Jesse Mates, and Dionne.

The Vikings hit a robust .372 as a team. But their strength turned out to be last year's weakness--pitching. The team held opponents to less than three earned runs a game. Reid Kellam finished the season 4-0, Michael Flack was 3-0, and Danny Williams recorded a 2-0 record.

This was the final high school game for seniors Max Hilbert, Chris Kelly, Jesse Mates, Daniel Novak (.397), Jason Keene, Ethan Thompson, and Danny Williams. Several of them had started for the varsity since their sophomore year. The group produced one of the finest fielding teams in recent Whitman history.

Next year's Whitman team promises to be a strong one, with the return of pitchers Kellam and Flack, along with Ross Olchyk, Dan Shannahan, and the addition of several promising JV pitching prospects. The Vikings will also return catcher Danny Lee, who led this year's team with 21 RBI, along with Sam Sharpe, Daniel Berman, Alex Rhea, James Dionne, and Brett Morgenstern.

Whitman Defeats B-CC 5-1 at Nationals Park
May 6, 2008 It wasn't classic B-CC vs. Whitman. It was the Experience Game. As in once in a lifetime.

Coaches Jonas Singer and Joe Cassidy emptied their benches early and often. Every Baron and Viking warmed up on a Major League diamond, heard his spikes echo off the dugouts’ still-scrubbed concrete. For the players and for the fans – more than 1,000 of them -- Nationals Park was the jewel of this attraction. Experiencing it was the reward.

Those with compromised attention spans need read no further than this: The game ended Whitman 5, B-CC 1.

The rest of us can savor a stellar evening with mild temperatures, soft sun and West Coast humidity. Notes on a scorecard:

5:01 p.m. Gates swing open to Nationals Park for the first couple hundred fans. Opening glimpse of the playing surface is from the left-field corner. Glimpse morphs to jaw-dropping wonder. Those are our sons, grandsons, nephews, friends and neighbors in uniform on the outfield grass. They're just stretching and tossing lightly. Yet they move like ballplayers who've been here before and -- who knows? –- will be here again.

5:49 Coaches Singer and Cassidy and the two-man crew in blue who will umpire this game meet at home plate to review ground rules.

5:50 Ceremonial first pitches from Whitman assistant Tom Berlin to Danny Lee and B-CC's Chuck Coe to Alex Cole. Simulated radar clocks Berlin with 11% more velocity. Flattering frame by Cole.

5:53 Michael Lee throws the game's first pitch to Cole, B-CC's hard-working junior catcher. Ball one.

5:55 Jake Boross singles for the Barons -- the first hit ever recorded by a high school player at Nationals Park.

6:04 Joey Willman delivers the Barons' first pitch. Ethan Thompson lofts it to right field, where Phaon Derr moves in a step, squints and makes a sun-defying catch.

6:28 Henry lays out to his left to snag a lead-off grounder in the third inning by Danny Lee, Whitman's catcher. Henry is quick to his feet but unable get off a throw. Score it the Vikings' first hit of the game.

7:37 Boross lines to third to end it.

7:48 After both teams have shaken hands to a standing ovation, one appreciative fan in the long-lingering crowd captures popular sentiment: ``Everybody wins tonight.''

Whitman’s Matt Kaler was a difference-maker. The senior handled everything at shortstop, pitched one scoreless inning and with the bases loaded and two out in the third, he singled up the middle on a 3-2 count.

Atmospheric outtakes: Nats’ ownership kept gadgetry mercifully unplugged. Who can remember watching a game at a pro-sports stadium without deafening decibels and madly flashing scoreboards?
