Scott Gelineau
#12 - P, 3B, 1B, OF (profile)
After joining the agency in the fall of 2005, Scott proved a huge addition to the DRS line-up heading into the 2006 campaign.
He played with the taxmen from the very beginning of the season, suiting up for the CT Sportsplex Early Bird Tournament, held the first weekend in April. It was the taxmen’s first-ever attempt in competing in a men’s (rather than coed) tournament, and they needed all the help they could get. DRS suffered three straight mercy-rule losses, but Scott did his part, bringing friend Joe Concodello to help fill the ranks, and single-handedly preventing the taxmen from suffering a no-hitter by smacking a triple for the only DRS hit in one of the taxmen’s three humiliating defeats.
Once league play started in earnest, Scott proved as a reliable a player as any on the roster. (He would play in 31 of 33 games on the season.) In the field, Scott played first, third, every outfield spot, and was one of the club’s top pitchers. One particular game saw Scott volunteer to play the rover position. He did an exceptional job, ranging from outfield to infield, foul line to foul line, making plays all over the diamond.
Off the field, Scott assumed the nickname “Kobayashi” for the astounding gastronomic feats he could accomplish during post-game dinners. Whether it was plates of hot wings, double cheeseburgers and fries, or large pizzas with everything on them, Scott could usually inhale his dinner and gulp down a second pint before the rest of the team had even finished placing their order.
As a pitcher, Scott led all players by appearing in 16 games, compiling a record of 7 wins, 2 losses and 3 saves. His most impressive outing was a save against the Bloomfield Beer Buddies over the Easter Seals Softball Weekend. Having already gone two innings, Scott took the mound for the bottom of the 7th. He made short work of the opposition, striking out the side – on seven pitches! (This was possible only due to the fact batters stepped to the plate with a 1-1 count.)
With the stick, Scott has been one of the club’s top hitters, batting .586 with 98 runs scored, 73 RBIs, 30 doubles, 7 triples, and 12 homeruns. He was his teammates’ unanimous pick for team rookie of the year in 2006, and also made a strong showing in the race for team MVP. (Amazingly enough, Scott’s great season came in the same summer in which he saw the birth of son Jonathan, meaning most days he was functioning on about two or three hours sleep.)
Scott’s best two-game stretch came on back-to-back nights. On a Wednesday, he went 4 for 5, scored 5 runs, had 4 ribbies, and hit for the cycle in a DRS win over the Kanes. Then on Thursday, he came back to go 4 for 4, score 3 times, and swat a double and a triple in a game against E Coli Happens.
