Rene was a surprise addition to the DRS team. A few years back, Rene had been among the few non-roster players who took part in a pick-up softball game held during the agency’s annual summer picnic at the Farmington Club. Always on the lookout for additional players to add to the roster, the DRS captain made a mental note, and in an effort to further recruit Rene’s services, later added him to the mailing list of those who were sent post-game wrap-ups.

Nothing ever came of it, but two years later during the 2006 season, Rene tagged along with Jon and Harris Reid to watch the DRS game against the Arch Sports Bar at the Windsor Housing Authority field. After DRS jumped to a big lead, Rene was coaxed off the bench and onto the pitching mound to finish up the game in mop-up duty.

That would have been it had DRS not scheduled an extra late-season Sunday morning game against O’Brians Pub in Colchester in the middle of October. Living not too far away, Rene agreed to join the taxmen and had a super game, batting leadoff, going 4 for 5, scoring 5 runs, legging out a pair of doubles, and pitching a complete game.

Though he cannot commit to playing full-time, Rene has stayed on the roster and continues to play with the taxmen as a part-timer.
