Fred is another of Mike Malone’s buddies who was roped into playing with the taxmen when DRS competed in the USSSA Men’s Class E Early Bird Tournament at the Connecticut Sportsplex in April of 2006.

Going into the Early Bird Tournament, Mike informed the DRS captain that Fred used to be the big power hitter on his old New Haven men’s league team, but that Fred’s swing might be a bit rusty since he hadn’t played too much over the past few years. Good thing too, for in his first at bat of the day, Fred poked a long fly that bounced up against the wall in left-center, allowing him to ease into second base with a double. Clearly, if he had been in true game shape, the blast would have carried the fence and he would have been called out per USSSA Class E rules.

During the tourney, he played right field for two games before moving to second base, a more natural position, for game three. There, he helped an improved DRS infield defense record five forceouts. (The taxmen still lost the game, but by being mercy-ruled in six innings, they showed a marked improvement after being mercy-ruled in only four innings in their first two games.)

At the plate, Fred was one of DRS’ top hitters on the day, going 3 for 5 with a double and scoring 2 runs.
