Walter Hurley

#1 - FAN (profile)

Walter was the son of local legend Walter “Doc” Hurley, and worked many years with his father planning and organizing the annual Doc Hurley Scholarship Basketball Classic. The Classic is well-known as Connecticut’s biggest high school basketball showcase, which has been annually held for over thirty years. The event has raised over $400,000, awarded to deserving high school seniors from throughout the Greater Hartford area.

Though Walter never played a game with the taxmen, he purchased a team jersey with #1 on the back. He was one of the team’s strongest supporters in the club’s early lean years. Due to his basketball ties, Walter had a trademark referee’s whistle which he brought along when he came out to support his co-workers. The loud ‘tweeting’ of his whistle would be used to spur on the taxmen (and to annoy the opposition.) As a result, in 1998 he was voted the team’s #1 fan by the DRS players.

Sadly, Walter passed away on July 30, 2005.
