Jerry Zayas, IV
#21 - PH, DH, C, OF (profile)
“Little” Jerry is the son of Jerry Zayas, and first began playing with the taxmen when he was twelve years old. Before that, he’d been tagging along with his father and coming out to watch DRS games since he was only eight.
At first, “little” Jerry would get playing time whenever DRS held big leads at the end of games. He might get an at bat here or there as a pinch hitter, come in to pinch run, or even bat as the team’s designated hitter.
Then after a couple seasons, if the team was short players, Jerry started to get more playing time, filling in at catcher or in the outfield. In 2006, a huge DRS lead enabled Jerry to even see a few innings at the hot corner. With his first chance, he gathered a ground ball and then sailed a throw over the first baseman’s head. (Like father, like son, or so the saying goes.)
At the plate, Jerry’s done a great job, despite lacking any previous baseball or softball experience. In a dozen games, he’s gone 14 for 26 (.538), with 3 extra-base hits, 6 runs scored, and 7 runs batted in.
In a 2002 contest against Haymond Law, Jerry surprised teammates and opposing players alike by poking a drive over the drawn-in outfield and scampering around the base for a homerun. (It is believed he holds the record for the youngest player to ever hit a homerun in league play.) “Little” Jerry’s best game with DRS came in a 2001 tilt against the Judicial Department in which he went 3 for 4, doubled, and scored a run.
