Alex Shapiro

Head Coach

Coach Alex Shapiro enters his fourth season as head coach of the Patriots in 2018. Model has had 10 or more wins in a season the past three years, including having a winning record for the first time since 2011 at 17-15 in 2017. This past season was one for the history books as the Patriots won the 44th District Championship for the first time ever by beating Madison Southern, 7-3.

Prior to coming to Model, Shapiro was an assistant coach at Bryan Station High School in Lexington, Kentucky for four years. At Station, he was primarily responsible for coaching the freshmen team. During his time at Bryan Station, the Defenders won back-to-back 42nd District Championships in 2012 and 2013.

Shapiro currently coaches in the Elite Baseball Club organization during the summer and has been doing so since 2012. In 2013, his team won the 16 & Under Elite World Series in South Bend, Indiana. Several players in this organization have continued their baseball careers at the college level.

After graduating from Henry Clay High School in 2006,where he played for Hall of Fame coach Herb Hammond, Coach Shapiro began his college baseball career at Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee in 2007 and was a member of the Great South Athletic Conference Championship team. He later transferred to the University of Kentucky to earn a degree in kinesiology and health promotion with a focus in teaching.

Known as “Shap” to his players and students, he is currently a physical education teacher at Crawford Middle School in Lexington and has held this position since 2013.

Shapiro is the son of Melanie and Steve and has two brothers, Josh and Danny. He and his wife, Mara, have a son, Harrison, who recently turned 1.
