UPDATE (TOURNAMENT and PIZZA PARTY):

1. Last game of the season is on 17 June. This will be a tournament, pizza party, and trophy presentation. Thus, please ensure you and your player are prepared to be there through 1130 hours.

2. For situational awareness, the following teams should be on the field in uniform (please make sure jersey is on the outside of the warm clothes) No Later Than 0850 since their games will start at 0900:

- Field 1: Cyclops (Red) vs Pegasus (Blue)
- Field 2: Griffins (Red) vs Dragons (Blue)

3. The following teams should be ready to be on the field No Later Than 0920, since their game starts at 0930:
- Field 1: Centaurs (Red) vs TBD
- Field 2: Hydras (Red) vs TBD

3. At 1000 the losers of the 0900 and 0930 games will play one another.

4. At 1030, the winners of the 0930 games will play one another.

5. Pizza party for the players and trophy presentation will take place at 1100 hours. This is a great time for the parents/sponsors to thank the coaches/assistants for their time this season, because they are volunteers and without them this would not have been possible.

LESSONS LEARNED:

1. Coaches are volunteers, so please remember this during your engagement with them. If you would like to, offer to assist since we always can use volunteers.

2. AYSL is a league focused on 4 things: Fun, Friends, Sportsmanship, and Soccer. The #1 goal is for the players to enjoy the game, but making new friends, learning the game, and demonstrating sportsmanship are just as important.

3. Check AYSL website to know what team your child is assigned, start times (either 8:50 or 9:50 and varies EACH week), and what lower field they will play on (not the field with the running track). The first lower field closest to the pavilion is Lower Field 1 and the field closest to the tennis court is Lower Field 2.

4. We recommend you process through the security gate AT LEAST 40 minutes early if you are playing in the first game of the day (8:50). If you are playing in the second game (09:50), we recommend even earlier.

5. Have your child dressed in their soccer uniform (red vs blue color based on if they are the home/red or away/blue team per schedule). Also each child should have a water bottle and be wearing shin guards. If you haven't done so already, please read the AYSL policy posted on this website.

6. Website updated weekly. We have 6 teams and only 2 fields, thus, 4 teams play first and then 2 teams play second. We recommend processing through the Balgat security gate at last 40 minutes early for the first show time.

4 teams: Practice 8:50 - 9:10. Game: 9:15 - 9:50.
2 teams: Practie: 9:50 - 10:10. Game: 10:15 - 10:50.

NOTE: A few players may have to move teams after the first week, due to drop outs / no shows / not paying for registration. We hope this doesn't happen, but it may to keep the teams balanced.

AYSL 5-6 YEAR OLD SOCCER POLICY REMINDERS

A. SPORTSMANSHIP: Competition is important for the enjoyment and development of the players, but sportsmanship and teamwork is just as important. Disrespect for coaches or other players will not be tolerated. Those players and friends/family members who do not comply will be removed from the game and habitual offenders will be removed from the league.

B. SEASON: The season begins on 24 Sep 16 with a camp day (payment for registration and uniforms; skills clinic), in which all players should participate. There will be 7 weeks of regular games beginning on 1 Oct 16. The end of season tournament/pizza party will take place on 19 Nov 16.

C. PARENT/GUARDIAN: A parent or guardian must be present and available during the entire practice and game, in case their child needs them (e.g. medical issue). After the game, it is important the parent or guardian take custody of the child, since the coaches have other obligations to fulfill.

D. EQUIPMENT: Players ideally will have cleats and must have shin guards. They will not be allowed to play without the proper equipment and will be checked prior to the match.

E. TEAM MAKEUP: Teams will be made after the conclusion of the 1 Oct 16 skills clinic, after the coaches have had some time to work with the children. Team make up will be based on age, size, skill level and gender in an effort to ensure all teams are balanced. After the first game, some players may be moved to ensure a fair distribution of skill level amongst the teams. Players will not be arbitrarily moved unless it is to ensure family members can play on the same team.

F. AGE AND MOVING TO 7-8 LEAGUE: This is the 5-6 year old league. Players will play in their age group unless extraordinary circumstances exist. Thus, children turning 5 or 6 during the season can play in this league. Parents whose children turn 7 during the season may request their child move to the 7-8 league. On a few occasions, if the parent, child, and the 5-6 AND 7-8 league coordinators agree that a child clearly demonstrates the size, skill level, and maturity to play in the 7-8 league they may be moved.

G. START TIMES: Players should plan to be on the lower soccer field each week ten minutes before start time. We have these fields reserved from 0830 to 1050 daily and then we must vacate for the next league. There will be two start times, since we only have 2 fields (4 teams at a time) and 6 teams. Thus, 4 teams will start at 8:50 am and the other 2 teams will start at 9:50 am each week. See schedule for when each team plays. At that time, players should have their uniform on with shin guards and socks, and a water bottle ready to begin. If possible, players should bring a soccer ball with their surname written on it since balls are in limited supply and many children have similar looking soccer balls. Practice begins (depending on when your game is scheduled) at either 8:50 am or 9:50 am, followed by a game at approximately 9:15 am or 10:15 am each week.

H. DURATION: Games will consist of two 15-minute halves with a 10-minute break in between. During the games, the clock will continue to run. We will end around 10am each week.

I. PLAYERS REQUIRED: Teams should play 7 vs. 7 with a goalie, thus, there will be a total of 8 players on the field for a given team. The goalie will wear gloves and a different color jersey provided by AYSL. Teams without 8 players may play with 7. If one team is short of the required 8 players, the league coordinator can take players from a team that has more than 8 in order to play the game and maximize participation. The coach giving up the players may choose which players to give to the deficient team. The team needing the players will be marked as losing that week’s game.

J. BLOW OUT MINIMIZATION: Coaches should recognize early if their team is going to dominate. If so, start doing the things necessary early on to avoid excessive goal differential versus waiting until an excessive goal differential exists. Thus, if a team is beating ahead by 3 or more goals, than their coach should implement one of the below measures successfully used in other leagues or one they consider appropriate, since it is in the interest of all participants to experience the game and learn (e.g. respect, value of teamwork):

1. Impose restrictions. If you have a dominant player and the other team isn’t able to present a suitable defense, impose a two- or three-touch limit on this player (or all your players) so that they have to rely on passing and movement off the ball (instead of solo dribbling efforts) to score more goals.

2. Focus on possession. You can require your players to complete a minimum number of consecutive passes before they are permitted to score. Again, this will force your players to do more passing and off-ball movement to succeed, and will make scoring more difficult since your opponent will now have more time for players to recover defensively.

3. Emphasize defensive responsibilities. Set a goal to “preserve the shutout” or to “not allow any more goals” by your opponent. Since players tend to relax (or become outright lazy) on defense when they have a comfortable lead, these types of goals can be timely reminders of the habits you desire from your team.

4. Put your Non-scorers up front. Take advantage of this time to allow some of your other players to get a goal.

5. Switch your goalie. Put in someone that normally doesn’t play goal to give them the experience. Don’t just put in your back-up, second best keeper – put in someone else. Nothing erases a goal differential and boasts the opposing team’s morale like a couple of goals.

K. Coaches will be responsible for refereeing and coaching their teams during the game. If a parent/guardian desires to provide a coach feedback, it should take place before or after the game.

L. Slide tackling is not allowed and will result in a change of possession.

M. No jewelry is allowed during play and should be removed prior to taking the field. This will be checked prior to the match.

N. If a game ends in a tie AND time allows, sudden death penalty shots (shootout with 9 players shooting per team) will be taken to determine the outcome. If time does not allow, then the game will be recorded as a tie.

O. Each team will play 2 games during the end of season tournament. The two teams with the best record will play the teams with the worst record in the first games. The two winning teams will than play for the championship of the division and the losers will play for third and fourth place. The games will be abbreviated during the tournament as required based on time available on the field.
