EXTREME INLINE HOCKEY LEAGUE OPENS WITH A PAIR
League Wins the Pot with Two Outstanding Games

Posted Wednesday, November 3, 2004

The eXtreme Inline Hockey League (XIHL), North America’s newest and best semi-pro roller hockey league, opened their regular season in Glastonbury, CT this past weekend, October 30 & 31, with two of the league’s top teams facing off with a pair of games. The New Jersey Werewolves traveled to the Z-Rink to take on the host team, Hartford Thunder. The teams split their two games but the fans were the real winners as they were treated to some exciting inline hockey action.

The first game, played Saturday night, October 30, saw the Thunder jump out to an early 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Jason Salvato at 2:46 and John Pinhiero at 4:33. The ‘Wolves cut the lead in half, 2-1, with Nick Dimoulas’ own unassisted tally with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The teams traded goals in the second quarter as John Luszcz scored for the Thunder at 3:07 and Bill Katinsky answered for the Werewolves at 8:10 leaving the Thunder up by one, 3-2, at the end of the first half.

The Werewolves clawed their way to the lead as Brian Trohalides scored at 3:49 of the third and Vinny Comito scored another late period goal at 11:38. The fourth quarter belonged to the host team as the Hartford’s Jason Salvato completed his hat trick by scoring two goals less than two minutes apart at 4:03 and 5:19. Hartford Thunder goalie, Andy Pettola, shut-out the Werewolves in the fourth quarter sending the Thunder fans home celebrating a 5-4 victory. Pettola came on at the beginning of the fourth in relief of Hartford’s starting goalie, Mike Perry. Perry suffered a concussion as a result of an inadvertent knee to the head. Perry and Pettola combined to stop 20 of 24 Werewolves shots while New Jersey goalie, Joe D’Aloisio stopped 23 of 28 Hartford shots.

The New Jersey Werewolves were hungry for retribution and fans attending the Sunday matinee re-match witnessed the level of bad blood that was quickly escalating between the two teams. The Halloween Spooktacular was a rough-and-tumble affair as the teams combined for 40 minutes in penaties, including a number for slashing, roughing and cross-checking.

The Werewolves were howling mad and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter on even-strength goals by Bill Katinsky at the :40 second mark, Thomas Plaugher at 4:14, Brian Trohalides at 5:31 and Justin Guzman at 10:21. The Thunder finally woke up as John Pinhiero scored the first power-play goal of the weekend only :13 seconds into the second quarter. John Luszcz brought the Thunder to within 4-2 when he scored at 1:11. New Jersey defenseman, Justin Guzman, wrestled the momentum back from the Thunder as he scored his second of the weekend only :35 seconds later restoring a three-goal lead for the Werewolves at 5-2.

Hartford and New Jersey would trade goals for the remainder of the second quarter as Pinhiero (4:04) and Luszcz (10:24) scored for the Thunder, while Trohalides (7:47 & 10:35) answered back with two for the ‘Wolves staking his team to a 7-4 lead at the half.

The third quarter saw the Werewolves continue their domination as Sonny Kim scored two goals (1:26 & 6:45) sandwiched around Terry Patsel’s goal for the Thunder at 1:55. Dale Sona extended New Jersey’s lead to 10-5 with his first goal of the weekend at 1:22 of the fourth quarter. Hartford staged a late rally as Marc Barbato, Terry Patsel and Sean Connelly each scored goals late in the game, but the Thunder could get no closer than 10-8 and the Werewolves left Connecticut with a split of the double-header. Both teams played both of their goalkeepers two quarters each. New Jersey’s tandem of Matthew Cavender and Joseph D’Aloisio stopped 21 of 29 shots they faced while Andy Pettola and Jamie Mendelsohn of the Thunder combined to stop 27 of the 37 shots they faced.

Next up for the XIHL is the New Jersey Werewolves Festival weekend scheduled for November 13 & 14 at the Extremes Indoor Sports Center located in Bridgewater, NJ. Fans of elite inline hockey who missed all of the action in Hartford should circle these dates on their calendar. Four games are on tap for this event and four of the best inline hockey teams in North America are scheduled to do battle in what is sure to be the most exciting inline hockey of the year.

Opening the Festival at 5:30 PM on Saturday, November 13 is the Marple Gladiators as they take on the battle-tested Hartford Thunder. The second game of the Saturday double-header, scheduled for 8:00 PM, will see the host New Jersey Werewolves skate against the ever dangerous Garden State Ottakringer. On Sunday, November 14, the early matinee features Hartford facing-off against the Ottakringer at 11:00 AM, while the ‘Wolves and Gladiators close out the weekend at 1:30 PM.
