COACH, PLAYER & PARENT HANDBOOK

Welcome to Oklahoma Youth Football League. This handbook has been put together to acquaint young football players and their families with some general and some specific things about the OYFL program and about football. Please take a few minutes and together. It is important that your expectations are based on a clear understanding of those held by the OYFL.

---OKLAHOMA YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE PHILOSOPHY---
The sport of contact football brings to youth a unique structure, which can be compared to life itself. The success of each play, game and season relies on the interdependence and execution of each individual player responsibility. Children and coaches with different expectations, interest, ability and levels of enthusiasm become a real football team when they become motivated...

1. To believe in themselves
2. To learn the game through concentrations and hard work
3. To believe that there are no unimportant team members
4. To believe that there are no unimportant positions
5. To be confident in their own ability
6. To never wait for someone else to make the play
7. To believe that there are no unimportant practices
8. To believe that 100% effort at practice = 100% game performance
9. To believe that poor behavior off the field affects the reputation of the entire team.
10. To believe that positive attitude wins on and off the field.

OYFL believes that, in youth football, winning games should not be pursued as an end in itself, or at all costs. The real value of this program is developing the “1-10” player, winners in a winning relationship. Interdependence, team work, self-confidence, respect, cooperation, responsibility, commitment and discipline – if each OYFL team is successful in developing these characteristics in their players via football, then we will have helped them win in life, as well as on the playing field.

---PLAYER ELIGIBILITY---
A parent may choose to allow their child to play up in the age of 1 year. The player’s age as of May 1, 2008 shall be the player’s league age for the 2008 season.

---WEIGHT---
There will not be a weight limit for all age groups.

---PRACTICES---
Official practice will start July 1st. Some teams will practice up to five (5) days a week until school starts, possibly even Saturday.

In football, more than in other youth sports, the pre-season is a progressive learning experience. Knowledge and skills gained at each practice is built upon daily, making players with frequent absences extremely ineffective, therefore:

*Coaches must be notified when a player can not make practice, and be notified in advance when a long absence, such as for a family vacation etc. is planned.

Coaches will be responsible for making sure the players have adequate amount of water.

Parents must pick up players promptly after practice. Coaches will not leave a player alone after practice. Chronic problems with late parents will not be tolerated.

---GAMES---
Games will be played at Reed, Edwards, Davis and Tuttle. The full schedule will be ready when all teams are accounted for.

Each year, the OYFL conducts a "Season Kick-Off Round Robin." To be held Saturday TBA together and play 8-minute quarters with a running clock and one official. The Season Kick-Off lets the kids get the jitters out and allows the coaches to evaluate their teams before the regular season starts.

Most Games are played on Saturday, with a few selected dates on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Schedules may change.

Every attempt is made to schedule an equal number of home and away games, and to keep the games of the same community together.

It is an OYFL rule that a player, team, coach and/or parent ejected from a game for unsportsmanlike conduct can not player/enters the following game. OYFL may impose additional penalties. A second ejection in the same season will end the remainder of the season for that player, coach or team.

The head coach will decide where and when a players plays. Because of different skill levels between players, not all players can run the ball or be the quarterback. Every position is important, as football is a team game and the players must understand this.

A team's head coach is responsible for the conduct of his coaching staff, players and their fans. Disrespect displayed by any of the above toward officials, opposing teams and their fans or even his own team will not be tolerated. Harassment of game officials will not be tolerated by OYFL. Therefore, any reported incidents will initiate immediate action by the OYFL board to find and correct the problem. Chronic violations could result in loss of home games or the termination of membership in the OYFL. A letter of misconduct will be submitted to _______________________ and any result in addition penalties.

The purchase of equipment (helmet, all pads, cleats, mouth piece, practice pants and jersey and uniforms) is the responsibility of the parents. Head coach is responsible for arrangement of team uniforms) is the responsibility of the parents. The Head coach is responsible for arrangement of team uniforms.

Check with the OYFL board for the assistant program.

---COACHING---
All OYFL coaches are required to be NYSCA certified before any contact with the kids. All coaches who attended the USA football clinic are required to show certificate of certification. Safety is a top concern as coaches will conduct safe and sane drills and prevent mismatches in practices. All coaching staffs have experience in equipment fitting and can take care of these issues. OYFL strives to attract the best coaches with the experience necessary to run a program that’s age appropriate for the division they coach in. Coaches meetings are conducted to insure rules are understood and requirements met. Remember that our coaches are all volunteers who may also have kids in the program. They give a great amount of their time to coach your child and teach them football. Your support of the team and coaches will ultimately decide how much success and fun your child has.
