i went to a go kart race yesterday with Danny Horta. Let me tell you something, these people are just as insane or more insane than r/c car racers. they put atleast $10k into their hobby. and they are very good at what they do. anyhow, danny raced his first race. he qulified in thrid place and won the race. he is just as awesome in these karts as he is in r/c. i would have to say he will be a professional within a year. mark my words. that is if he keeps into it.
congratulations danny!!!

I have not done the kart racing like you mentioned but i went to a place in fort lauderdale where they have a little indoor track. it gets addicting.

one of my co workers did kart racing for a while. he even raced in the parking lot of Homestead Miami Speedway. He said its a blast.

Danny I was into Karting not long ago (When the EasyKart division was just introduced in USA)... I even had a team shop in Oppalocka (Still exists, TL Racing), I have many friens still there in case you need track assistance or a mechanic. I also know, and can reccomend Advanced Karting, they just moved to Moroso, but their track service is just awesome.

The good races are being held at the Homstead track (Fast track, but loooong).

What are you driving??? 100, 125 Shifter, EasyKart???, not to pull my own chain, but I was very good at it (Until Federico Montoya and Sperafico came into the picture), if I can give you some pointers let me know.

10K is just the start of it... A good uniform and helmet will cost you about $ 3000

juancho,

when i was gonna buy a kart everyone told me to get into an easykart. they said and it would be too hard to learn on a shifter, but i ignored that and jumped into a 125cc shifter with an icc motor. just like in r/c cars, my dad is my mechanic so it pretty much a father and son thing for us again. yeah homestead is pretty long track about 50secs for an average shifter kart driver. its a lot of fun and i am really enjoying it. its definately a rush that you dont get in r/c.

I have been intrested in carting for a while, but dont know anyone in the sport. Maby if i sell all my r/c cars i can afford one. ha ha Oops, forgot i was on an r/c car forum.

Danny, go to the OppaLocka track, it will give you a good seat time on a shifter kart (Watch the bump in the middle of the back end straight though)... Ah, make sure to use the rib protector, we are too skinny to hold those G's.

I talked to your father the last time we wre at Rancho Alegre, and noticed the spark when talking about other kinds of racing, but I will honestly reccomend an experienced mechanic while you get good base settings and the whole thing, it is amazing the nasty amount of tricks you can pick up in a couple hours with them....

Meanwhile, like in any other kind of racing.... SEAT TIME, SEAT TIME AND SEAT TIME.

Good Luck, maybe I'll go watch you sometime (BUUUAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!)

nahhh i'll pass on opa-locka...i actually have rented the karts from there. but nobody really goes out there. the track is extremely bumpy and no one seems to go out there except the kart shops that are located there. Homestead definately gets more people and there is much more competition. i dont even think opa-locka runs any types of racing besides practice. but your right i should give it a try. its always good to run different tracks, gives you more seat time and learn different set-ups.

with the right gearing and long track definately over 100mph+. at homestead we are doing around 85mph. the kart icc motors are tuned for better top end power, putting down around 45 to 50hp. a stock dirtbike honda cr125cc motor puts down around 35hp.

Not only that, we are talking about 350Lbs including driver on a 125cc engine (At least on Danny's cathegory).

In a track like Jacksonville (Where I won my first {and only} regional... and my retirement race on 2003...jejeje), the back straight has over a quarter mile in lenght... you end up at a speed that will grow curly hairs down there and make you feel like you need to use both feet on the brake pedal just to secure the turn... shifters are really FAST!!!.

Hey Danny, By the way, what about your arms after a 20 minute run???... You are gonna have to put some more meat in them.

Are the engines 2-stroke or 4-strouke?? because on my 2 stroke Yahmaha YZ 125 is pushing alot more then 35hp. And with me on the back (14yr old skinny kid) im preatty sure I know i could go past 100. Because as with any kind of racing weight counts for alot i can go alot faster then some 180lb guy on the same bike.

I would say barelly to 100.... and that would be on a loooooong straight line.

The difference is huge based on the dynamics if you compare the friction of two tires Vs four (Even more considering the width of the tires)... Not to mention in karting your butt is 3" from the ground.... I honestly dot think you make a 90 degree turn as fast on a bike with twice the engine as you could in a Kart.

if you are going to correct someone, atleast be right. it is barely. also, you put a race streetbike down on that track vs a kart, i doubt the kart will have a chance in hell.
also, look at the motocross bikes in supercross races. they take hairpins like its nothing. a motocross bike in supercross can take a turn better than a kart on pavement.

Joe, next time you watch a Motocross race, time their lap times vs track lenght... let me know.

Average lap speed on a 125 cc Motocross race is 48mph.... unless you are comparing a 250cc with a 125 Kart, then I'll say I have driven a Formula 3000 and turned into the chicane at 95 mph lime nothing.

Joe, even i the motocross guy have to say if you tried to take a trun that fast ther is absolutely no was you could make it without a tirp to the hospital (or the morgue), unless you mean a very very very low angle long sweeping turn. I would never even think about taking a turn that fast and i never have.

P.S. If you watch on TV or in person right on the turn, right at the apex of the turn they hit the gas to get them going in straight and enough speed for the next jump, they arent going very fast in the turns.

CJ

Also, a 125 bike can get up to speed very very quikc , if you know how to use it, just in the races they never have a long straight they are alwys jumping or turning or going over bumbps, they never have a long flat straightaway which is why people who race gear their bikes really low because they dont really need all the top-end.
Where i would think on the Cart, with those long straights, and tight turns you want to get a perfect balance of speed in the straight's and power in the corners.

what the hell are you talking about??? how is my spanish??? how is your german, japanense, etc. what kind of question is that and what the hell does that have to do with anything at all. if you correct somebody's english, correct it properly is what i am saying.

furthermore, when you talk about motocross racing, you refer to the 250cc class... kindof like if you talk about kart racing, you refer to the 125cc class, not the 60 easykart class. hey buddy, let's compare apples to apples not apples to oranges. and you know what you are talking about??? hey, why dont you try to get out of the "c" main at a local race!!!

CJ
also, you have no idea what you are talking about. you say try taking a turn at some kindof speed and you will wind up in the hospital??? let me explain something to you, a kart has brakes just like a dirt bike. you think a kart can pull into a corner and turn without braking??? cut me a brake
furthermore CJ, you completelty do not make any sense. it seems in your first comment that you try to make the point that the kart will beat the bike. but then you go on to say how the bike has an advantage in acceleration. please, i know you are very young and no real life experience, try to stay consistent.

Exactly Joe... You are comparing a race street bike with a go Kart... Duhhh.

Have you even been on a speed bike ever???... and I mean driving not in the back seat.

And dont be talking about my c mains... If you go and look the RPR charts, I beat your finishes in two out of the three races we had together (I even won a B Main)... Not that I think that is too much of an acomplishment (Even less if you compare my time in the hobby).

My English comes from a Bi Lingual college in South America, I'm sorry if I misstreated your so beautiful spelled language... by the way, Have you finish your college yet???

JA!!!, I even checked the charts... Since I started in RC racing I competed in only one C Main (My first race ever) and bumped to B main to finish 4th... So if you are going to correct someone do it correctly.

Joe, Before you continue expanding on your negative comments (Like in any other forum), all I'm trying to say is that usually the input on any given topic is given by people that had the opportunity to experiment on it at some level, and I dont think you have done Kart Racing or Speed Bike racing or Super Cross, to make comparisons of any kind (I honestly dont think TV or the Go kart Mini Speedway in the Ft Lauderdale park can give you that kind of knowledge).

In any case (This is getting boring), I just wanted to say to Danny that is awesome that he got into it, and like he said, it is a rush you dont find in RC or many other sports... Good Luck Danny.

CJ, Karting in not something you just jump into, it requires lots of commitment and the investment is very high (If you are in to compete).

If you feel inclined to try it, you can start by renting track assistance, they will provide a Kart, teach you the basics and assist you while you train... this will cost about $ 400.00 per session... then if you like it, you can start doing your numbers and figure out how far can you go along.

A professional Karting set up runs for about $ 75.000 a year (This is competing all sanctioned regional events and being present at one ot two big events)...

One thing to consider: No matter how good you are, you will never get your money back (Even if you win all of them and have sponsors)... Karting is used as a plataform to go where the $$$$ is... if ever.

Or you can get a used Kart and go for fun to a local track to race once or twice a month....

Either way.... SEAT TIME IS THE KEY.

Spechless is short Alex...

I think we all started by buying a used Kart and going to local races on the weekends... then, just like in RC, you start wishing to get the best Karts, the best set ups and going to state races etc, etc... A couple years later you add up, two or three chassis, propper towing vehicle, trailer, hotels, gas and food and the nasty amount of spare parts in the garage... WHAAAM!!!!.

But again, if it is just for fun, you can start by buying a used go Kart for about 4 grand, plus equip.

i purchased a used kart for 5k top of the line 2004 tony kart with icc motor. my package i would say is good enough to compete with whatever anyone has out there at the local level at least. this set-up new is at least 9 to 10k. i am doing this for fun only. i practice about twice a month. the tires usually last pretty good.

i honestly dont think its that much more money than r/c. besides the initial investment we havent spent a dime on anything except gas and tires.

when i went to race at the 2004 winternationals at fort myers me and my dad went independently. i know for just that race we spent about 2,800.

regardless if its r/c or karting, racing these things at the highest possible level is going to be extremely expensive.it just depends what you want to get out of your experience.

You are right Danny, and I didnt mean to discourage anyone with the monster number required to do it professionaly... it is still an awesome experience to do it for fun and you are still racing a few cool events... and winning them too... jejeje.

I've seen karting set ups with up to 4 Karts per driver, dedicated mechanics for each one and a minimum or 4 sets of tires per event (These are the people that go to the track with a huge 20 something FT trailers and all the toys... OUCH).

I did also see a Birel team using a saw to cut the chassi in specific parts in order to get the chassi to flex more in certain parts of the track... all these chassis were set for one race only at a $ 2000.00 a pc???... Can you bellieve this???... There is no pocket deep enough.

You are lucke your dad is a mechanic, that gives you not only an enormous advantage in the expenses, but also you know you are getting 100% out of your mechanic (Which sometimes is very hard to find). KEEP IT UP DANNY.

Hey, who's up for AutoCross? Next one is on October 23rd at Hialeah speedway. AutoCross is an SCCA event. You get your car, ANY CAR, and drive a lap around a course of cones in a parking lot. Speeds aren't that high and it's only one car at a time, so chances of damaging your car are very small. Everyone says you barely make it to 3rd gear. But it's a fun way to drive your car hard and not worry about getting tickets or crashing. I'm getting more details but I'll definitely be going on the 23rd. I'll post more details if anyone is interested. I know a few of you with your Z's and Rx8's could be interested.

I got the SRT4, it's the Neon on steroids. 2.4L Turbo putting out 230hp at the wheels stock. (Most of the stock Dyno runs I've found put it in the 220's) The launch kinda sucks since it's Front Wheel drive, but it's not terrible. But once it's rolling, look out. It's not a 8K rpm ricer engine, like those HONDAs (Alain :P). Torque starts high at around 2500 RPM and stays relatively level. Max HP is at 5500 so you don't have to high rev that thing to get power. And the turbo builds up nice and fast, so lag isn't very noticable. Pedro that used to race with the HPI has one in Yellow. I need to talk to him to see what goodies to put into it. I'm changing the shifter in a few weeks so a short throw shifter. It's a 5 speed, but a 6 would have been perfect on the car. Best thing, if i drive it like a normal person, i'll get 20+MPG. LOL, but when you leadfoot it, you can see the gas guage drop in a few runs. I'm happy with the car. Strange thing is no one's pulled up next to me looking to run. Maybe it's faster than I know. Can't wait to Autocross it, being smooth is the trick since top speeds aren't achieved. I'll let you know more info when I get it.

GROW UP JOE!!!!

In the first place I could care less if there are 10 regionals, nationals or World championships coming in the next year (Which I'm not planing to assist any way... I'm too busy running my business to worry about your big mouth), secondly, you talk of one RC race like you are DJ on steroids and in all honest truth, even if you are better than many of us you should stop blowing your own horn thinking you are something that we all know you are not.

If you want a race with me, lets go to a real track with real cars and then we can talk about who's got the bigger balls.

God dam it Joe... you really piss me off, the worse thing is that you drag me down to your kindergarden-open hand-close your eyes-lucky punch immature fights... you really suck.

so a$$hole, get a life, dont act like a kid, and shut the f%$K up.

Ok Girls, seriously, both of you STFU. This is the lamest forum fight I've ever seen. It's not like you guys are actually ever going to race or anything. Juancho works to much and isn't allowed to race and Joe won't be able to find his pit crew that he needs to run, so it will never happen. And what the hell do you think this is, some kind of turf war? "Loser can't race for a year" What kind of weak crap is that? I'm regulating. Both of you shut up. Go have your typo fights somewhere else. They're painful to read. Email each other or something. I'll set up a slapping match if you want, since that's what you guys are doing. Loser has to pay for the others face moisturizer. Gay...

LOL...remember Danny, your GTI started off as a Golf. It's not a Neon it's an SRT :P

oh eric im not saying that, i mean your car out of the box is a rocket, but the thing that throws me off is the interior man....when i saw it it kinda looked a little cheapy imo....but hey congrats on the new ride. those things are fast. it will eat my 2003 20th anniversary jazz blue gti ( 1 of 1000 nationwide) alive. shameless vw plug

Yeah interior screams rental car. But at least they put custom SRT guages in the dash and the Boost guage is a nice touch. I already changed out the radio and the shifter will be next. I'll get a nice shift knob with it. The seats are nice though. Very racing style, they really hold you in place. But it's definitely not comfortable for bigger guys. Everything else is boring.

I think we should try to get everyone together like Andy said and plan a drive. Maybe Hobby Beach or Holliday Isle. Wives and Girlfriend included.

Please, don't try to race me, I'm a big wimp. I can haul azz till 3rd gear then I pull over and take a Zanax.,
