In our game last night, one of our ladies got injured in a play at 1st base and had to leave the game. When her spot in the batting order came up, both of our teams were a little confused how to handle it. I thought there was a rule stating that if a player has to leave a game due to injury we can just skip that player's at-bat as if it wasn't on the batting order, without counting it as an out. However, we couldn't find this specified anywhere in the rules, so what we ended up doing was subbing in the last girl who went 'out' to bat in her spot. We have no clue whether this was correct or not, so does anyone out there know the way we should have handled this, if in fact our way wasn't right? Is there a specific rule for it that we just couldn't find?

Our league rule #10 (continuous batting order) handles this situation:

"There is to be a continuous batting order, i.e. everyone bats in a definite order whether actually on the field or not. Players unable to continue due to injury shall be removed from the batting order with no penalty (no automatic out), and play shall continue provided that the minimum team composition is still met."

This was revised in our 2006 rules, so if you had 2005 or earlier, you wouldn't have been able to find it.

But the solution you came up with sounds like it was fair and agreeable to both sides. Well done.

Thanks Dennis, we must have been looking at the old rules, or somehow missed that one. Appreciate the help for next time (hopefully there won't be a next time, though).
