In a hot day with temperatures nearing 100 degrees, Midway defeated the Staples Legionairre 3-2 to ensure home-field advantage throughout league playoffs.
Brad Lusti helped the Snurdbirds in earning the win on the mound and getting the game winning hit in the tenth inning.
Lusti started for the 'Birds providing four solid innings allowing no runs on two hits. Pete Marjamaa and Dustin Burkman, along with another solid defensive performance by the team, kept the shutout in tact through the next four innings, until Staples was able to tie the game in the ninth.
After a base hit and a fielder's choice, the next two Staples hitters reached to load the bases. The number nine hitter in the lineup for Staples then took a low and outside curveball to right center field to plate two Staples baserunners, tying the game at 2-2. Lusti was then called upon again to retake the mound, striking out the next two hitters keeping the game tied.
As it was the whole game, the Snurdbird bats were quiet in the bottom of the ninth, leaving two runners on base. Lusti allowed an infield single to begin the 10th inning but retired the next three Staples hitters in order to give the Birds a chance to win the game.
Ben Davis started the inning with a leadoff walk, then stole second base on the next pitch to get into scoring position. Rasmussen struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but Davis was able to advance to third on the throw down to first. Adding to his stellar performance on the mound, Lusti took the first pitch he saw and drove it over the left fielder to score Davis and win the game for the Snurdbirds.
Jeremy Schwartz took the loss for the Legionairre but was able to pitch the whole game, allowing only four hits and three walks.
Rasmussen led the 'Birds with two hits on the day. Kyle Dormanen, who played another solid game at third, added one double and scored a run.
Midway ends the regular season with an overall record of 24-8 and 14-2 in the Lake & Pine.
The 'Birds will host the #4 seed Nevis Shysters Saturday at Midway, then will host either Wolf Lake or Staples on Sunday. Both games are a 1:30 start.

I think teams are going to be first in line to get games with the 'Birds during midsummer and moonjam.
Koski, it wasn't the same without you there. We need to get some north reserved right next to squibbs and them boys. It was a pretty good spot. Then Menahga can monopolize that strip on the edge there.

I agree with you guy, we should take over that area. beer pong was a good idea. zed leppelin stole the show with hairball coming in a close second and dennis deyound capturing the third spot. we should tip our hat to staples' pitcher, he did a good job.

Blazing hot day = pitchers strike zone and a quicker low-scoring game. Normally Midway's never going to get outhit by Staples, but given that zone Staples has a couple veteran pitchers that aren't going to give you much to hit well, and Schwartz did a consistent job of that. If Staples had fewer dead spots in the order offensively and more clutch hitting they would have gotten this one. But they don't, they're a first year team with too many guys been away from the game for too long.

Wow, didn't expect to see this topic again this year. Classic reason why you can't let bad teams hang around.

That's why we should have drafted Lundberg so we could get him wearing the white and blue to prevent the onslaught of homers next year.

Good luck in state Dave.
