Since the fall league was cancelled early due to the weather and umpires, each team will be getting money back.

On Wednesday the 15th, managers can pick this up at 6:00pm at the Marion High School. The park is closed and locked, so we can't meet there. I will be in my truck in the parking lot north of the school in front of the football field.

If anyone has any questions, please contact me. I will be calling managers to let them know also.

How much is each team getting back in Co-ed for instance? Just so I know how much it costs to play half a season of softball.

How much did it cost you to play a full year of softball?

Then just ask the question. Don't throw in crap like "Just so I know how much it costs to play half a season of softball.". What would you need to know that for in the future? Your second question serves no purpose except for trying to be a smartass.

If you would have just asked and left it at that, I would have told you to talk to your manager and see what he says. Each team is different and it will be prorated on how many games you played, minus balls.

Is it also prorated for cold weather gear people may have bought, Ie, long pants or under armour shirts?
Bottom line is that the way the season ended was not done well...You did it, so you should expect smartass comments. It is not our fault you cancelled the season.

By the sounds of it you havent payed much attention to the weather the past couple of weeks being as it has rained a crap load both weeks and the fields arent in great playing condition Dan made the call to end the season and thats all that matters you get money back so their is no need to Bitch about things if you dont like how its being ran then go play in another leauge. He has turned this leauge around from what it used to be.

Sam, what would you have done? Explain that to me.

1-We were 3 weeks behind because of the rain. With the rain last week and this week, we would STILL be 3 weeks behind, putting us playing AFTER Thanksgiving if we don't miss any more days.

2-James Isaacs is the only umpire that I could consistantly get to umpire games in Marion this fall. He was having knee surgery (I may have written earlier that it was ankle, but it was knee) on Friday October 27th and he told me that he would not be able to work after that. Tyson was the younger guy that was working with James and he took a new job at night. I called 4 other umpires for the week of October 30th - November 3rd. I needed one umpire Monday, Wednesday, Friday and 2 umpires on Thursday. Out of those calls, I was able to get 1 umpire for Wednesday. People who umpire already have their schedules for the winter for High School sports and their personal life because it is the "offseason" for them too.

3-The park turns off the water on November 3rd. If you go to the park, you will notice that the gates are closed and locked. They don't want the park to be open through November.

So, with this information, WHICH I HAVE ALREADY STATED BEFORE, what would you have done? When I cancelled the season, the weather for the next 10 days didn't look good at all. Which turned out to be dead on because all of last weeks games would have been cancelled as well. That being said, it has rained every day this week also.

Please tell me what you would have done differently. You can take your Under Armour and long pants back. If not, use them in December for your weekly outdoor sand volleyball league. Or maybe when you shovel the snow from your driveway for your Christmas Day slam-dunk contest.

But seriously, instead of saying it's my fault for cancelling the league, tell me what the fault is. Give me some realistic scenarios how the above could and should have been resolved so that we could play through November.

Thanks,
Dan

So much for anonymity...I guess I should have been like others and just flat out said what a bunh of "Bull" I think it was.
That being said Dan, it is too late for asking for suggestions. That was the whole problem. You didn't do that in the first place. You just cancelled without opening it up for discussion here. Afterward, others suggested using one final day to finish up games, which would have at least given closure, but you declined. I was just disappointed. Thats all, and these comments have been made so hopefully, it is handled better next time. Maybe at least give us all a say instead of springing the end of season news onto us 2 days before our next games.
I agree with most people that the league was ran fairly well...until the end.
Finally, since you are interested, I will keep you posted on the snow shoveling/slam dunk/ 3 point shootout/ beach volleyball extraveganza to be hosted this winter. Who knows, we may even throw in some horseshoes and washers for the kids.

This will be my last post on this thread.

"That being said Dan, it is too late for asking for suggestions. That was the whole problem. You didn't do that in the first place. You just cancelled without opening it up for discussion here."

I don't know what you wanted me to do. We had no umpires and no hope of getting done before Thanksgiving. Out of the 17 managers that I called, not one of the told me that they thought it was the wrong decision or that they didn't agree with it. I shot it by 4 people before I did it. It's a good thing because we would still be playing in December now.

"Afterward, others suggested using one final day to finish up games, which would have at least given closure, but you declined."

That is not true. Look under the "Fall League is Done" post.
**********************************
Mike Barsel - Is it possible to finish the rest of the co-ed games on a Saturday afternoon and wrap up the season?

SOLSON - I would go for a Saturday Morning/Afternoon all day wrap-up tournament. Good Idea.

DReid - If someone wants to get a tournament together for a Saturday afternoon I can give you the numbers to the Co-Ed managers.

Give me a call or send me an email and I can give you the numbers. I can have the fields ready for that day. But someone will have to organize it, I'm too busy now and am done for the year. But I'll help where I can.
*****************************************
How you can possibly say that I was declining by my comments is beyond me. You have a lot of fire after the fact and you EASILY could have taken me up on that offer and ran a Saturday tournament. Nevermind the fact that since the league ended, it has rained to where both Saturday's would have been unplayable. This time of year when there is no sun or heat, you need 3-5 days after a good rain to gets the fields dry enough to play.

"I was just disappointed. Thats all, and these comments have been made so hopefully, it is handled better next time. Maybe at least give us all a say instead of springing the end of season news onto us 2 days before our next games."

I was disappointed also. But as the person who is running the league, as well as talking with other officers involved with the league, it was for the best that the season was cancelled. How anyone could still hold the stance that we could have played, is beyond me.

Again, I started calling the managers and asked them what they thought. Alfred Schach, Joe Lachiana, John Abney, Bobby Howell, Dale Poole all agreed that it was time to call the season because of the weather and the FACT that we did not have an umpire.

Sorry for the long post, but I thought all of this had been covered and I want to make sure that I absolutely wanted the season to continue if at all possible. I play a lot of softball and hate that I can't play during the winter. Everyone who knows me knows that to be true.

There was no way that we could realistically continue the fall league.

Dan

Well let me start out by saying that you made the right call by ending the season when you did ! if the people who are BITCHING about this want to play saddle up the horses and go to the tournment in St. Louis...other wise go play in Carbondale or Murphysboro get less games and spend more money and deal with the crap they put teams through .....Good Job Dan on the league this year it was better than anything Baker ever put together !!!!!!!!

Dan it would be nice if these people with the big mouths would post their names, that way you could let them get involved with the league next year. These people must be new to the league, if they had played in marion before they would know how much better it is now.

Dan,great year all around! And who ever is whinning should have played in past Marion leagues when Baker ended the fall season 1/2 the way with no explaination or refund. Danny is straight up with info and also finances, that has never happen in Marion Leagues in many years.
Dan I would like to say great job!
