An illegal bat is. . .one that is not legal!

What you're probably asking is about bats that are too dangerous because they are too 'lively'. We follow Softball Canada rules, so their rules for legal/illegal bats apply to our league.

In the past, bats were required to have a Bat Performance Factor of 1.20 or less. But that has changed because there was too much monkey business going on with the bat manufacturers. The BPF requirement has now been superceded by the requirement for ASA certification.

ASA tests representative samples of a given bat model to determine the speed at which a ball rebounds off the bat. Based on the results, the bat will either be approved (legal) or non-approved (illegal). For a complete listing, see the ASA website:

http://www.softball.org/about/certified_equipment.asp

Select 'Bats' from the drop-down menu, then scroll down to the links for a listing of all non-approved bats (those with pictures are very helpful). Approved bats should have the ASA 2004 certification mark, but that's not a guarantee (some models were originally approved and then later had the approval revoked). So if you're considering buying a new bat, print off the list and take it with you when shopping!!

The onus is on individual teams to make sure they are using legal equipment. If you find a team using an illegal bat, make sure it is taken out of play, and please report it to the league executive (repeated offenses by the same team will need to be dealt with).

Hope this helps.

Yes, I would say that the Miken Ultra 2 is illegal. So says ASA (and thus Softball Canada) because it is explicitly on their list of non-approved bats.
